I said I didn't care about River's secret, but apparently I have thoughts. :D

I've decided that the only way I'd truly be interested in Who River Is is if she turns out to be Romana. Of course this would make absolutely no sense with the fob watch logic they've set up, but what's DW without gaping plot holes? Another downside is that (again, ignoring fob watch logic) Romana will ultimately spend all of time as a mother to fake kids. MEH.

Okay, I lied. I'd also be extremely interested if she's Jack. Because HA!!! (However this will never ever ever happen, even if they ignored Jack becoming Boe.)

If she's Susan I WILL BE GROSSED OUT FOR ALL TIME. STOP HITTING ON YOUR GRANDFATHER!

If River's secret is that she makes Eleven regenerate... Well, Wilf managed to off Ten without any epic speeches. (He left that to Ten. MWAH. (Soundtrack courtesy of the Ood.))

I really have a feeling it's going to be:

Show: TA DA!

Me: O...kay.

Show: SERIOUSLY, THIS IS THE MOST EPIC THING EVER ABOUT RIVER.

Me: *coughs*

Show: YOU ARE SO STUNNED, YOU CAN'T EVEN.

Me: Are you sure she's not Romana?

Whatever Moffat has planned in revealing who River is I'm not gonna be impressed. If she wasn't so overbearing and obnoxious I'd probably like her more, but she's honestly the most annoying character I've ever watched in the history of everything. I find her even more annoying than Bella Swan and I find the Twilight series unbearable.

But the Series 6 trailer did nothing to convince me that I should watch the show. I'm going to, but that's only to see how much further Moffat is getting away from the true essence of Doctor Who.

Of course some would say that he's actually gotten back to the true essence of DW. :D

There's really almost no way I care about this. I'm holding tight to my River is Jack theory until they pry it from my cold dead hands because it at least amuses and interests me. And there's pretty much no way Moffat would ever go for that.

So basically replace Romana with Jack in your talk with the show and that's how I expect to feel. "Um...okay. At least now you can stop being coy with it right? Right? Ah hell, I'm going to go cry over Doomsday again and remember when I cared about this show."

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-03-31 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
River being Jack would crack me up JUST SO MUCH. XD XD XD

[identity profile] papilio-luna.livejournal.com 2011-03-31 03:03 pm (UTC)(link)
The longer they drag out the ~mystery~, the riskier it gets as far as whether or not the pay-off actually justifies all that relentless (and, from where I was sitting, really annoying) teasing. At this point, I am prepared to be endlessly relieved that it's over and done with (please please please let it be over), but the answer would have to be REALLY AMAZINGLY CLEVER AND BRILLIANT AND EPIC TO THE POWER OF ONE MILLION before I'll actually feel that the lead-up to it was truly earned.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-03-31 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
It's sort of like when shows drag out UST beyond all logic. It becomes annoying instead of exciting.

[identity profile] kammgirl.livejournal.com 2011-03-31 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I gotta say I don't care about River. Secret or anything else. I know people will say this is my ship bias and in the beginning maybe it was, but I just find her very arrogant and know-it-all. I don't like that she knows more about the TARDIS then the Doctor and enjoys lording that over him.

But I will say I did warm up to her a bit when she took Amy under her wing. She genuinely seems to care about Amy.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-03-31 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I really do like when she mothers Amy. Awwwww. :)

But no matter if it's Classic or New Who, I much prefer a companion that compliments the Doctor rather than a duplicate of the Doctor. It's why I really never warmed up to Romana - she was basically The Doctor 2.0. That dynamic just wasn't all that interesting to me.

And I'm beyond caring if people think that my ship bias is the reason that I don't think that S5 was THE MOST AMAZING THING EVAR. Doctor/Rose doesn't really even enter into New New Who for me, really. And I'm able to like or not like shows without D/R factoring into it at all. Really! Downton Abbey - didn't think of D/R once! For true!

I'm almost afraid to speak up and say I'm just gonna watch and see what happens.

** please don't beat me senseless for that remark **

Personally I want her to be Romana...

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-03-31 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Her being Romana would be pretty cool! Until I remember how she winds up, and damn that's crappy.

[identity profile] goldy-dollar.livejournal.com 2011-03-31 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
HA! I tend not to be a big fan of "CHARACTER X IS SECRETLY ANOTHER CHARACTER" because it seems to... sort of take away from River? Like I want her to be a character in her own right, damnit! She shouldn't have to only be interesting if she's actually someone else!!

To be honest, I'm not really convinced Moffat is ever going to tell us the full story of what's up with River Song. :p

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-03-31 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)

That's a good point.

I'm not convinced that the Mystery is going to be all that spectacular. Even if she does kill the Doctor, it's like...other people have done that. Why the huge big mystery about it? It'd be creating pseudo drama when there would be so many other ways of making that actual drama.

[identity profile] nicachick007.livejournal.com 2011-03-31 03:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup, that's basically how it's gonna go.

I've never liked her, ever since stupid Library episodes. Because she's all "mwah mwah mwah sweetie you is mine" and I'm like "BACK OFF BITCH HE'S STILL ROSE'S. ALWAYS AND FOREVER."

It's only slightly less annoying (key word there: slightly) now that Rose and Ten II are off having a lovely life in a different universe and Eleven seems crazy disconnected from everyone he ever knew from when he was Nine and Ten (which bothers the crap out of me). But I still don't like her, especially because the show is TRYING SO HARD for her to be epically important.

Truly epically important characters don't have to be shoved in your face for you to get that they're epically important. Rose and Donna managed to do those things all by themselves. As did Jack. RIVER SUCKS!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-03-31 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I think that has been a problem with the character so far. So often we're told she's amazing and awesome instead of showing us she's amazing and awesome. I'd say there were some scenes in S5 that did finally show that she does awesome things though.

The show still has a way to go for me as far as making her flesh and blood. Right now she feels like a caricature of what a strong woman should be.

[identity profile] intrikate88.livejournal.com 2011-03-31 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm still vaguely convinced River is the TARDIS, because it's crackily lulzworthy and also makes a bit of sense and doesn't interfere with anyone's ships, really, because no matter who the Doctor gets with it's sort of always going to come down to Doctor/TARDIS.

If that doesn't work, I actually think it would be hilarious if she was no one at all:

River: The secret is... that I am actually... sweetie, I'm Mary Ramulonomalkjsf.

Eleven: ...okay?

River: And don't you see how this changes everything??

Eleven: Not... particularly? Who are you?

River: From your temporal calculus class. We were ten. I sat behind you.

Eleven: *squints*

River: Okay, it was a few rows behind you.

LMAO. The Doctor was the only person to give her a valentines card that year and she's stalked/trusted him ever since.

Yeah, I doubt it'll be all that impressive, and at least half of that will be because they've tried to build up the secret so much.

River=Jack is my favorite theory that I've seen around. ;)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-03-31 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
It amuses me so much to think that she's Jack. XD

Or the Master. That would be hilarious. XD

I'm going with your last option.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-03-31 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
She's already said that she kills the best man she's ever known, or something like that, so it probably is.

I posted a theory on River a while back - I think she might either end up being the wife/killer of the bearded!Doctor and not Eleven-proper, or that since "time can be rewritten" that whatever her storyline is, it will be wibble-wobbled away.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-03-31 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)
It wouldn't surprise me if there were timey-wimey nonsense going on. Like, at all. :D

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2011-03-31 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
At this point I don't think there's any resolution possible that would leave me flabbergasted and thinking "OMG TOTALLY WORTH IT". I just want to minimize her mystery and emphasize her awesome. Any resolution or story that does that for me is a-okay in my book.

Unless she is Jack. I WOULD FLOUNCE FOREVER.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-03-31 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Jack would be SO FUNNY. And makes River's ending a bit more amusing. :D

If she is the Master, I would honest to god fangirl Moffat a little bit.

If she's Jack, I will lol.

I am kind of interested in River for River, but I'm really dubious about this ~secret~ being all that interesting unless all the pointing towards "wife" and "kills him" are blinds.

Me too.

My problem is that I'm not terribly interested in her. So all these Big Secrets aren't making me do the fangirl flail.

I have come to like River a lot more than I used to (which, granted, is not saying much at all given my initial reaction), but yeah. This. It's going to be one of those things that they've built up so much to be ~surprising~ and ~amazing~ and whatever, and we're all going to be like, *yawn*. If we're not, "Oh, that? I figured THAT out 6 episodes ago!"

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-03-31 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
It gets to the point where things get a bit silly. I don't know - maybe this kind of hook is exciting for an 8-year-old? :D

[identity profile] solielle.livejournal.com 2011-03-31 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I really think the only way they could make River's "secret" (or her, in my opinion)interesting to me is if they started using a version of her that hadn't met the Doctor yet. Then we'd pretty much find it out at the same time as she did.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-03-31 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, that would be nice!

[identity profile] maypanic.livejournal.com 2011-03-31 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Whatever the massive mystery is, I just want to get it out there and move on. Nothing can live up to this much build-up. And I really disliked River in the Library eps, but season 5 made me kind of love her lots, and now I'm concerned whatever they do with her is gonna make me hate her again and that will be sad and also possibly give me whiplash.

NO. WAIT. I HAVE FIGURED IT OUT.
In the Time War, Romana was fobwatched/regenerated/regressed to infancy and abandoned on earth, to be adopted by the Noble family, where she of course grew up to become Donna. When she was in her teens she had a secret pregnancy and gave the baby up for adoption- a child later named Amelia Pond. Then she traveled and would've remembered who she was but Ten messed with her brains so they didn't explode and some Time Lady powers leaked out and got scrambled and she couldn't un-fobwatch so she had a long and happy life with Shaun and when she died of old age she *surprise* regenerated and changed her name to River Song. Madness ensues. She spent a while in the library taking care of kids who never got around to getting any older until she got fed up with that and computed herself right back outta there, but the trauma of creating a new corporeal body out of nothing killed her so she regenerated again- and since she knew that would happen, it was kind of suicide, so in the traditional Time Lord punishment, she regenerated as a man. Jack Harkness, at your service. LOOOOONNNNGGG time in that form. Unfortunately the Doctor abandoned The Face just before the golden glow took over and she/he regenerated back into her true form, a sexy blue box, which fades out and back in just in time for the First Doctor to run off with his granddaughter, Susan.

Yes. She is indeed Romana/Jack/Amy's Mum/the TARDIS. It all fits. The hat hatred part I haven't quite worked out yet, but give me a few minutes.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-03-31 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
BEST. STORY. EVER.

[identity profile] mornea.livejournal.com 2011-04-03 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I think River is the Silence, hence the episode title "Silence in the Library."

I'm sure there is more to it, but I'm not sure what. I think we'll end up back at that Library. The season six trailer shows a shot of Rory in the Ten TARDIS as it explodes and Ten is regenerating into 11. Why? We're going BACK farther than the Big Bang Rewind.

I'm sure she's not anyone from the doctor's past pre-ten, or he'd have either known her in the library OR she'd have known he would not have known her as Ten (if she's a regenerated Romana or Jack).

[identity profile] mornea.livejournal.com 2011-04-03 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
...and, I wonder if the Doctor leaving the diary in the library started it all. That is, if that end is actually the beginning.
