  1. I watched the short promo for SGU. Obviously somebody's been watching tons of BSG. Heh. So given that TPTB have managed to cheese off both SG-1 and SGA fans in the not too distant past, will there be enough of an audience left to watch it? Oh hold on. This is going to be on SyFy, isn't it? That means tons of non-geeks will now be tuning in! "Well this seems like one of those science fiction shows I'm not really into, but I'm not watching the SciFi Channel. I think. [squints at SyFy logo] Nope. Okay, I'm in!"

  2. I watched all of Spaced. While I liked it and enjoyed it, I can't say that it was true love. It's definitely worth watching though, which is rare to say about any show these days. I'd describe it as mixing the rapid-fire pop culture references of "Gilmore Girls" with "When Harry Met Sally" while on welfare. And crack. (Which is a completely overused term these days, but does apply to Spaced.) I don't think I could ever not adore Simon Pegg, and this was my favorite Jessica Hynes role I've seen. (She usually plays someone you want to smack around, but Daisy was lovable.) Here's a sample clip if you're interested.

ETA: I just realized, there are three DW people in that clip. :D Simon and Jessica, obviously, but also unexpected Master! :D

  3. Do I remember someone saying that the Marple stories are worth watching? (The ones with Geraldine McEwan.) I'm looking for new Netflix stuff.

Sometimes it's okay to pimp yourself out. Post a list of your top five fic-favorites you've written, regardless of fandom or the reason you love them. This isn't about the BEST things you've written, but what you LOVE most. Then tag five other people to do the same.

Five in no particular order. )

And I tag anyone who hasn't been tagged yet.

This is why I never ever ever post WIPs - they never get finished. This is also unfinished, but since I wrote the bulk of it back in 2003, it just won't get finished. [ profile] aj just reminded me of it, and I don't think I've ever archived it on my journal.

Title: Untitled SG-1 Fic With Dinosaurs
Fandom: SG-1
Rating: PG

A/N: Originally written for a fic challenge by [ profile] hya

Unfortunately, with all the amber waving and reactor disarming, Sam failed to hear the 40-foot dinosaur sneak up behind them. And Daniel? Well, Daniel and strategic observation were never really on the same page. )

As of today I've been on LJ for 5 years. Seems both shorter and longer than that. I've met some fantastic people through having this journal, and some of them I've even met in person and have shared some traumatic great times with. I wouldn't have traded it for the world.

I have no post of awesome since I was out running errands/shopping most the day. But just imagine some big story here involving my primary fandom shows over the years - Stargate SG-1 and Doctor Who.

One where Daniel tries to explain to the Doctor (in very small words) that he wishes to communicate in the spirit of peace, which makes Rose think he's rather slow and so immediately tries to befriend him through hugging. Jack Harkness hits on everyone, which disturbs Jack O'Neill greatly, but earns an interested look from Teal'c who really misses his warrior-bonds-of-the-Jaffa days. Sam barricades herself in the TARDIS and proceeds to take things apart, which opens the heart of the TARDIS. Instead of becoming and egg or being able to glow, the TARDIS zaps some men in Vancouver for dinking around with UST for 10 years. And finally, the Doctor happily mocks the stargate technology with things like, "those wacky primitive ancients," until it hits him that they've been screwing around with time in very very very very bad ways. He promptly brings original!SG-1 back, replacing fish-in-the-pond!SG-1.

Since half my flist seems to be aflail today, I found myself on GateWorld. And had to look to see when the movies were coming out.

SGA S5 casting spoilers and spoilers for the SG-1 movies. )

  • I cut my fandom shipper teeth on Sam/Jack in SG-1, which is why so often I'm bowled over by canon in DW. small spoiler for Atlantis 4x03 and a bit of babble about DW S3 )

  • I have found all the eyeballs! That Nancy Drew Crystal Skull game. )

  • I have saved the laundry room! A guy and I walked up to the laundry room at the same time, stepped in and found thick smoke from burning/melting rubber everywhere. We both quickly stepped out. Guy hopped around, just kind of fanning the open doorway. Yeah, that'll stop whatever's the problem. I held my breath, poked my head in, spotted the smoking machine, turned it off and ran back out. *That'll* stop the problem. I wonder if that guy would have continued to fan the doorway if the machine had actually burst into flames.

I'd intended to watch more Red Dwarf last night, but got sucked into looking through old journal posts. And...I made an icon. A nostalgic icon. Mwah.

I think I've said before that I want to be [ profile] splash_the_cat when I grow up. She's got a hooray for Sam Carter post that talks about some fandom issues with the character. Including the one that if Sam had been in a relationship with Jack, that she'd simply become "Jack's girlfriend." Man, that one used to bug the crap out of me back when I was in SG-1 fandom. Why's it always that the woman seems to suddenly be "*only* defined by the relationship" if in a relationship with a man, however, the man does not? Why?? For every pairing that I've shipped over the years, I really can't think of one case where either the woman or the man suddenly lost their individual identity due to going into a relationship (or simply the possibility of going into a relationship - UST and so on). Where does this fandom notion COME from?

Actually, I think I might know where it comes from - a bit. There's such a history - well, history of the world, basically - that a woman's worth was based on what man she was with. It was only in the 20th century that norms began to change. Slowly. So I think there's the need to make absolutely sure that these old notions of "a woman's worth is contingent on a man" does not touch female characters. Which is a good idea. But then it moves to the next level of the idea that a woman really must have *nothing* to do with a man or else it will be implied that her worth is gained through him. And so any sort of romantic relationship (or hint of a romantic relationship) and suddenly the woman becomes "weak" in some's eyes. And god forbid a woman ever display any kind of emotions, even if they fit the circumstances. I can't remember the details since it was a few years back, but do remember after one episode where Sam became emotional about something - and I remember thinking it was justifiable - I'd seen comments of people thinking she didn't deserve to be an Air Force officer because of it.

I sometimes think that to some, the *only* way a woman character can be "strong" is to be Aeryn Sun: leather-wearing, gun-toting, and emotionally repressed. And...we've just got very different ideas about what a "strong woman" is then.

Someone mentioned a scene from a S2 SG-1 episode that's always cracked me up. So I felt like capping it. And then had to do a few DW pics as well. What?

Okay, why when presented with "would you do the [ profile] sjficathon again?" am I hovering over the "Yes" button? WHY? That would be INSANE. I haven't watched the show in over a year. And I wrote the last one practically two days before the deadline. ARG.

But maybe I could...NO. YEESH. I think [ profile] josephides promised to smack me down if I ever got the urge to do another ficathon. Smack me!

Go. Go now.

Per [ profile] havocthecat, the Doctor and Rose can join Sam, Vala and Janet's space pirate crew! And apparently the SG-1 boys are there as well, but huddled in a storage bay eating Ben & Jerry's for some reason. Hey, I don't ask what's been going on on SG-1 anymore. Janet's off stabbing people. (hmm. maybe this is why the boys are hiding?) Vala's off...well, I don't exactly know what Vala does. But Sam and the Doctor are off trying to out-nerd each other (until Rose finally drags him off for sex.) I don't know what SG-SpacePirates are using for transportation, but I'm assuming everyone will want to pile into the TARDIS since it kicks ass. Plus I'm sure the boys will all be able to quickly find another hiding place. Oh, and Capt. Jack's just there for the sex.

And *this* is exactly where the Doctor and Rose are right now.

I've been thinking. In the past, the S/J Terror Alert has been raised and lowered based on...highly secretive reports. Possible WMDs and the like, only Pete-shaped. Yeah. That. But since I don't have my ear to the ground so much anymore, maybe I don't have my finger on the pulse, and other cliches.
