Wherein there are many exclamation points.

  1. It's September! Does this mean I can officially crave pumpkins and pumpkin-related things?

  2. Go forth and prompt/write at the Doctor/Rose Fixathon! (3 pages of prompts already!)

  3. Nothing really huge to say about Leverage's "The King George Job," but Sophie's really a duchess? HA!! I bet she has a castle too! Everyone in England has a castle. *nods*

  4. Holiday weekend! 3.5 days off! And my parents are coming down. I know this because I got an email from my mom saying she was bringing a turkey to grill. Okay! :D

  5. ETA: I've been looking at Kindles and clones, but am not convinced about any of them. What I'd actually like to do is to read fics in book form since I really don't like reading on a monitor. But I have seen a Kindle in action and it looks pretty good - almost like reading on paper. The problems are numerous though: the tiny Kindle looks too tiny; the big Kindle apparently is a bit weighty to hold for long periods; the big Kindle doesn't have wifi; PDF files are doable but can't reduce/enlarge text like book files... Why haven't magic books been made yet?

For what it's worth, in re: 5, I read a ton of fic on my kindle. It comes with a basic web browser, which is no good for anything fancy but works well enough on text-heavy sites. (such as pretty much anywhere that one would be looking for fic). And I've had no real difficulty formatting fic to store on the kindle either; the kindle reads plain text files perfectly well, and there's several free programs on the internet (I use mobicreator) that can turn an html file into a kindle-compatible ebook file.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-09-02 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Does it? Hmmm. I might have to rethink it. I saw comments on it that it doesn't increase/decrease size of PDFs and thought that was that. I stupidly didn't even consider plain text files...

[identity profile] sumeria.livejournal.com 2010-09-02 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
It does. iirc, it also technically supports html, but not very well. I usually covert them to an ebook format just because I like to keep more formatting than txt allows, and there's several programs to do it, but the plain text works fine.

For PDFs it doesn't, it's true, resize them, but I do find that if I switch to landscape mode the text is large enough to read.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-09-02 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Text files might be the easiest, although I'm not sure if it keeps italics and so on when you copy. Hmm.

[identity profile] sumeria.livejournal.com 2010-09-02 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
It doesn't, I fear. Text files don't allow italics, actually, and copy/paste doesn't (on my computer) save them either.

If you want to keep formatting, the best way to do it is to save and convert the html file.

[identity profile] bittybye2000.livejournal.com 2010-09-02 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Kindle, you can easily read fic, save to one document in an HTML code, download Calibre and convert it to Mobi and then you can read it on your Kindle. You can also convert it to ePub, PDF, a whole host of things. It sounds complicated but it's really easy. I've been doing it for months on my Kobo only in the ePub format.

I think that you might me able to read the HTML pages on the Kindle, but I'm not sure as I haven't gotten mine yet.

That does sound better than what I'd been reading. Very managable!

[identity profile] bittybye2000.livejournal.com 2010-09-02 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I've done it with my favorite of your fic and put it on my Kobo. And since I have little skill with computers, if I can do it anyone can.

1). I think it does!

2). \o/

4). My last weekend before classes start. D:

5). I'd kind of like a Kindle as well because the simplicity of having everything at my fingertips is nice. On the other hand, it does sound like it's still a bit of on ongoing technological process so I think I'm going to take the "wait and see" approach for now.

5. I wish they made a size in between their two sizes. I'm having a Three Bears moment.

I use a Sony EReader (which I love, love, LOVE). The bookstore is decent, and it the reader will use PDF files. I can change the orientation so that the text reads either traditionally or so that I can hold the reader sideways. When I make my PDF files for fic (and I've done it loads, believe me!), I just make sure that the text is a large font size, like 14 and that the margins of the document are smaller than normal. Then I usually don't have any problem.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-09-02 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll have to take a look!

[identity profile] frakup.livejournal.com 2010-09-02 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
My dyslexic brain read that as carve pumpkins. Which is also perfectly valid, but I'd rather crave pumpkin related things, like pie. I also made a mean pumpkin creme brulee once. Ooh, and it's almost time for pumpkin (or butternut squash) soup. That's one of my specialties. Now I'm just making myself hungry.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-09-02 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Pumpkin creme brulee? MMMMMMMMMM.

[identity profile] outforawalk.livejournal.com 2010-09-02 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
My friend has a nook and she has loaded it with fic. The text size is changeable. And the pumpkin spice stuff signs were up in the cafe this morning. So I say crave away!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-09-02 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember there was some downside with the Nook for me, but I can't remember what it is now.

And pumpkin spice lattes!

[identity profile] mornea.livejournal.com 2010-09-02 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I went back and forth between Kindle and NOOK for about three months, and settled on the Nook. There are more books available and you can get upgrades on Nook. It's all touchscreen. Kindle has the small keyboard which in my house would get all sticky:).

Try Barnes and Noble's NOOK. I prefer it to Kindle. It also has the "reads just like paper" thing, and I *think* you can upload stuff to read on it (like other files.. fanfic for example)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-09-02 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I might have to go look at it live and in person.

[identity profile] vegmb.livejournal.com 2010-09-02 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I had a pumpkin spice latte Tuesday. Yay for the return of pumpkin season!

I have a Nook, and I mainly use it for PDF files for fanfiction. And I'm able to make the font any way I choose. It's awesome. I use it for reading all those really long fanfics, that you just don't want to read on a computer monitor, you know?

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-09-02 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what I'd like to do. I just can't read for very long on a computer monitor.

[personal profile] captaintish 2010-09-03 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. It's awesome. I like it so much, that it's gotten to the point, that with some fics, like the alt-verse, I'll wait until a story is complete, then I'll download the whole thing to my Nook. It's great. And right now, I'm rereading rallalon's In Human Hands, which when downloaded, turns out to be about 600 pages. :) I'm planning on rereading Opal's The Sums of Things next, and then reading the rest in her Fourteen series. *pets my Nook*

I've been looking at something similar but everything i looked at wouldn't support word docs. I'm not much of an apple fan but it looks like the iPod Touch might be the best/only option.

XD

Actually, they look a bit big for how I want to use it.

I think I may be going halvsies on one of these soon, but the fact that my mum is splitting it sort of prevents all of my fic from going onto it but it will be great for actual books and textbooks! Can't wait!

...but a Nook or Kindle seem perfect for fic.

RE: 5.

My parents, my mother especially, REALLY want to get me a Kindle or a Nook, because I read SO MUCH but I REALLY DON'T WANT ONE. They're like "But it's electronic and you can have literally THOUSANDS of books in that little tiny thing all at once!" And I'm like "Yeah, but it's not really a BOOK. It doesn't REALLY have pages I can turn and get paper cuts from. I'll never open it and having forgotten which page I'm on flip through the part I think I'm at going 'No, read that... read that... WAIT WHAT?' and back it up. It doesn't have that new book smell... or that old book smell. And I can't line up electronic books for everyone to see how many I have!"

My books are my pride and joy and I'm obviously running out of bookshelf space, have already actually, and I'd really like an other bookshelf for Christmas, but I'll probably get one of those stupid E-readers. >:|

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-09-03 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
There is something about holding a book, isn't there? Although if my library would loan out e-books, I'd be going electronic so fast. Books are kind of a pain to lug around. :D

[identity profile] nicachick007.livejournal.com 2010-09-03 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh there is. But I don't find them difficult to take with me. I never leave home without a book, but usually when I leave home, it's to school, so it just goes in my backpack and doesn't make a difference.

Plus I've made sure all my purses will hold a decent sized book. It drives my sister crazy cuz we go shopping and she's like "Look this is a cute purse!" And I'm like, "But it won't hold a book, I don't like it."

It sounds like people who have them do love them.

me too!

about e-readers. I have a nook, and I often use it to read fics. it only accepts pdf and epub with it's easy with openoffice to create a pdf and you can change the size of the text. only with documents that have been scanned, like old textbooks and screenplays is the text size set. I also use a fanfiction downloader program to save long fics.

there's a lot of ereaders out there now. it all depends on what you want. there's some good ones that can read nearly every format of books but which don't have wifi.
I wanted one with wifi partly so I could go online and read fics. which I do. and it's fun.

there's ereaders that are like little tablets and others which are very, very simple.
I like the nook cause it's got wifi and android so you install apps so it's worth the price. and it's $149 now.

the kobo is pretty good too. and only $129. I liked the cooler and the foxit but last time I checked both were priced $249.
the pocketbook is pretty nice and costs $199.

most of the cheap ones don't have wifi though and for fic-reading is kind of an important feature.

you should check ebay, there's some cheap kindles there.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-09-03 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
At the moment fic reading would be my biggest use. I don't actually buy that many books - I generally get them from the library. Maybe a handful a year I'd actually buy.
