An Academic Question

Thinking about the success of the DW audios, I was thinking about Nine and Ten audios. (Yes, please?) How would you feel about a new companion with Nine or Ten? The audios have created new characters to go with past Doctors, so...they might do the same with Nine and Ten? Maybe?

I thought about doing a poll, but there were too many variables I could think of. But so that you're not poll deprived:

Personally, I'm not sure I could accept (or have any interest in) a new companion. At least in the near future. I'd always be wanting someone I already know.

I think with Nine I basically couldn't accept it. In Rose he seems like he's basically come straight from the Time War with only a couple of stops (to... see the Titanic) and then obviously he regenerates.

With Ten, we've already seen him with a few random characters in the specials and in the books and stuff. I would find it easier to adapt, even to a long term companion. But I would get annoyed if there wasn't some acknowledgement of the emotional arc. Like, Martha seems to be the only significant companion in between TRB and PiC because or else he'd mention someone, and anyone after JE is going to have to deal with Crazy!Ten. So I think I'd prefer short-term companions to long-term ones, it's got to be said.

I think they could do really cool things with Nine. There's literally a whole other story for Nine that we never saw, between the time that he left Rose and Mickey in the alley in "Rose" and the time he came back.

We don't know how long that was, and it would be really interesting if he had an entirely different companion during that time.

Wasn't there something where they were planning something pre-Rose? A comic or something? Maybe I'm thinking of fic. Hmmmm.

Comic, but it wasn't allowed precisely because they wanted to show Nine with a non-Rose companion. XD

And some of the books have provided some irritation for failing to acknowledge that, at that point in his life, Ten is a few sandwiches short of a picnic. His arc is so tightly plotted that it's hard to imagine that in between WoM and EoT he met someone for a few months or whatever. TND and PotD both have him explicitly state he doesn't want to travel with anyone, so it's sort of hard to see it.

Eh, a pretty hearty "dnw" for me on both counts tbh. I don't really do well with audio stories anyway -- I get distracted when I have audio but no visuals, I zone out, I hate audio books as well as audio plays -- so there's that, plus I would not take kindly to a random invented one-off companion.

Which would make sense because they wouldn't need the huge-normous budget that would be required in creating something for the small (or even big) screen.

There are only a few specific windows during which they could squeeze in other sole companions for Nine or Ten, both of which were during periods when the Doctor wouldn't have been particularly inclined to pick up other company.

Could they invent new companions? Yes. Should they? I don't think it would be of much benefit unless it were overlapping with an existing companion, like the addition of Erimem to the Five & Peri stories. I believe people's primary interest would be in having new Doctor & Rose or Doctor & Donna stories. (No offense to the Martha fans, but there's continued to be such a glut of Martha product that I don't think she'd be a selling point.)

I don't know that I'd place especially high odds on them ever getting Christopher Eccleston to do audio work. David Tennant has said in the past he'd love to do it, but I suspect he might want to let a bit more time pass before coming back to do audios.

Like, say, until after the role has changed hands again. *cough*2012*cough*

I have enjoyed some, but it's easy for me to wander off as well. They have to be good otherwise I tend to play games on my computer and pretty soon I've lost track of the story.

And I wouldn't care for one-off companions in audio, just like I didn't really care for the one-off companions on the show.

They could conceivably do a Time War audio without him, ending it with the Doctor regenerating, and then canonically skip to the beginning of s1. It depends on when, specifically he regenerated. With him looking in the mirror and commenting on his new face and ears, I'd assume it was very very near the end of the war. Like the very end.

I didn't even think about adding a person to an existing companion situation. That could be interesting if done right. (Although amusing in the "and we never spoke of her/him again" sense. XD)

I possibly should have been more specific: I would not care for random one-off companions and I would probably be actively irritated by random longer-than-one-off companions. There's not really room in either of their timelines for that kind of thing to happen. I guess you could argue Nine TOTALYL HAD AWESOME ADVENTURES in that blip in "Rose" but I doubt it was much time for him at all, and if it was, that time did not seem to affect him in any way shape or form, so...

Though obviously he visited the set of LOST.
