Hmm. I probably need some S5 icons.

Okay. So. There was that.

I picked up with this episode, having watched the first 2 way back when. It was...sort of bland. I'd already been thinking that the episode had a plastic-y feel to it (not sure if it was the writing, the acting or simply the sets), and then the mini-golf ball Daleks turned up. BWAH! I wanted to shoot one into a hole. Dodging a rotating windmill, of course. Sadly the new paint jobs didn't inspire fear in me. XD

I'm not quite sure what to think. I don't know if I'm being too hard on it because of some kind of "it will never be as good as the good old days!" mentality or not. I'm really not one that's demanding a return of the RTD-era. (I'm perfectly fine that he's off pedaling his crack (and Jack Harkness) in LA.) I guess if I'm hanging on in any way, it's that I'd like to be entertained just as much?

But the plot seemed pretty silly, even for DW. And I wasn't really buying the angsting of Eleven about it - seemed like it lacked some depth.

However, I still like Amy. (More than Eleven, really.) I just wish Karen would stop with the eye-widening thing that I think is supposed to be an expression other than surprise. It irks me for some reason.

Oh, and Winston was amusing. (Not rolling on the floor variety, but still a bit entertaining.)

For what it is worth this is arguably the worst episode in s5, lirl. (Well, I say "arguably" although I would actually argue for a different episode as THE WORST... but VOTD is right up there.) I think Opal is the only person in the world who liked it. It was also at this point that I was still digging Amy a lot more than Eleven, which ended up not lasting much longer lirl.

No, you're not being too hard on it: Victory of the Daleks really did suck. The season did not really get consistently good for me until Vincent and the Doctor.

Oh. This episode. I just... It was so fail.

I mean I loved S5 every bit as much as I loved S1 (for similar and different reasons), but this episode... No. Just... No.

Yeah, I did a complete switcheroo of "Who do I like more, Amy or Eleven?" right around mid-season. Well, the answer to that question is alway "Rory!" but I started out really not liking Eleven much at all. That drastically changed by the end of the season, and it's not a spoiler to say that I'm pretty sure that wasn't an on-purpose characterisation choice. They just got better at writing him and Matt got better at playing him.

*points up*

This. I mean. I loathe Daleks anyway, but OMG was the episode ridiculously bland.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2011-01-14 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was really into Amy in the first... 4? 5? episodes, and sort of so-so on Eleven, and now I think Eleven is probably my favourite aspect of Moffat's Who (though Rory is right up there) and Amy is sort of just... there. It is a shame that apparently neither can live while the other survives because I would like to enjoy both halves (or... all thirds) of Team TARDIS equally.

Yeah, I agree. I remember being pleased enough with the beginning of s5 when it aired, but as I'm going through dwrewatch I'm realizing I don't really like the first few episodes other than Eleventh Hour.

I happen to find the Daleks utterly delightful, but even they could not save this for me.

It felt like a filler ep.

I think Opal is the only person in the world who liked it.

Oh Opal. XD

It was also at this point that I was still digging Amy a lot more than Eleven, which ended up not lasting much longer lirl.

Is...that a good thing or a bad thing?

For the EPIC RETURN OF THE PUREBRED DALEKS it was pretty much a nonevent.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2011-01-14 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah nothing really happened in it. IDK. It was just so boring and poorly constructed, Gatiss what have you done.

Good for Eleven, bad for Amy. D:

*FLOPS* I watch DVDs while on the treadmill, and this isn't good motivation to stay on!

That actually makes me feel better because I know you're a huge S5 fan. :)

The epic was off having coffee with its BFF the two-parter.

I think I heard one too many THE UNIVERSE IS ENDING VIA THE DALEKS NOTHING CAN SAVE US. Oh, wait. BF audio in too fast a time to enjoy them? idk.

POOR AMY. I do like her, more or less. Just in a sort of more passive way compared to the way I am actively a huge stan for Martha, Rose, Donna and to a lesser extent Rory. My problems with Amy are more problems with Moffat's writing style than problems with Amy Pond herself, so IDK, I feel very defensive when people call her the worst character ever and feel righteously outraged when people say she's the best companion ever.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
I hope it was good coffee!

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2011-01-14 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
I just find their actual dialogue hilarious -- like the bit in the s3 two-parter, where they basically watercooler gossip about Dalek Sec, is unendingly funny to me.

My hated perpetually-returning villain is the Cybermen. I HATE the Cybermen, god they are so boring and slow and un-scary while not being nearly as hilarious as the Daleks are. Aaaand apparently there will be no Daleks in s6, which I am okay with, but there will be Cybermen, which I am less okay with. Damn you, Cybermen.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
I understand that. Fandom makes me contrary sometimes.

I feel very defensive when people call her the worst character ever and feel righteously outraged when people say she's the best companion ever.

OMG you have this problem too?

[identity profile] papilio-luna.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Well, it's not like there aren't good episodes in there, they're just not consistently non-stop good. Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone is pretty good, even if it does make a total hash of retconning the Weeping Angels. Amy's Choice is very good.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2011-01-14 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
IT IS SO CONFUSING. When people are all "she is the bestest companion omg so much better than those other ones" I am immediately like "HOW VERY DARE YOU", but when people bash her I definitely feel the need to defend her honour.

All of s5 is like that for me to be honest, but Amy is kind of the epitome of it, especially because at least when I feel defensive of Eleven and Rory it is because I genuinely do actually like them a lot even if it is not quite at ZOMG TENROSEMARTHADONNA levels.

[identity profile] papilio-luna.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, there's really no avoiding the butthurt in this situation for me. Either way, I need an ice pack.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
I've heard it changes the Angels. Not sure if that will bug me or not. I really liked the premise of them originally.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2011-01-14 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
I was going to argue for VOV and on being consistently good, and then I remembered That Two-Parter and was like "...never mind."
