Note: I haven't seen the second half of this yet since it's on the next DVD. *mutters at the people who decided that*

Okay, first off: Business!River >>>>>> Fabulous!River. That dressed to the nines "sweetie, darling" shtick does not impress. Of course I've never been a huge fan of the Fabulous Douchebag type (aka The Captain Jack Harkness type). Probably why I was very "meh" about Lady Catherine. (Whoops. I meant Lady Christina, right? I still can't care enough to figure out her name for certain.) However, when River gets down to business she really is fabulous. More of that please. Though I did laugh out loud at "the TARDIS isn't supposed to make that noise - you just leave the brake on." XD XD

The whole are they/aren't they married...seems fairly silly. Is there really anyone watching who's champing at the bit for this info? Or does Moffat just enjoy teasing asexualist fanboys? (Although we do now have 2 references to Ten having married QEI, so that canon ship has sailed.)

I do dig the whole ex-es and the kid dynamic between the Doctor, River and Amy. Very amusing. I like the Amelia dynamic between the Doctor and Amy. It's not something that's consistent yet, though. It's sweet when it happens, and sort of non-defined when it doesn't. I was discussing this with [livejournal.com profile] _thirty2flavors and she brought up something that I'm just starting to notice: that I kind of prefer it when there's a 3rd party with Eleven and Amy. So far I'm not terribly interested in Eleven and Amy's relationship.

Okay, enough character stuff (what I'm really interested in) and on to the plot. While it in no way scared me (man, in Blink I was jumping all the time!), I did find it interesting. The problem with re-using a scary enemy is that a lot of times it loses its scariness. Funnily enough it seemed like this episode was practically an homage to Aliens - a sequel that retained its scary.

I'm not as fussed about changing the M.O. of the Angels as I thought I'd be. There was a line in there about what they used to do and how time had passed, so I easily enough bought that they evolved. The original concept was freaky enough, though. (Living in the past sounds romantic enough, but the reality would be extremely harsh. 40% rate of dying in childbirth? Simple infections can kill? Infrequent bathing? NO TOILET PAPER? NO THANKS.) But overall I thought it interesting enough.

Final Note: the desert camo gave me fond memories of SG-1. I should think about re-watching that sometime. :D

The Last Final Note: The new theme song is growing on me (it reminds me of the old Space Mountain song. XD), but I still have to laugh at the electric vagina.

I still think a SG-1/Doctor Who crossover would be fabulously brilliant. I, of course, am partial to Ten. But Nine would satisfy as well. :) I've yet to find one...

It would be awesome! XD

Or does Moffat just enjoy teasing asexualist fanboys?

I've always assumed that's exactly what it is (I think Moff is an asexualist himself, which makes it possibly worse)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-17 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe it's all a trick! Maybe he'll ultimately reveal that they were never married, thus proving the Doctor's asexuality!

There's been so much "River is the Doctor's wife. Or is she? *winkwinknudgenudge*" that basically she could turn out to be the secret love child of the TARDIS and the Giant Squid from Hogwarts and I wouldn't really care.

I will say that I love her red shoes from her "fabulous" outfit. (Great shoes are a weakness of mine - but at least I admit it.) And after watching Alex Kingston on the Craig Ferguson show and learning that she has a thing for "rabbits", I kind of think she's incredibly awesome. I'm not entirely sold on her character, but her herself? Great.

I love the new theme song. I don't like the new vortex at all (doesn't make sense to me). The only theme song I don't like is the one from S4. I heard it and I was like WHAT IS THIS DO NOT WANT.

I want her to be the Master! XD

Oh yeah. She's very cool. :D

I'm not sure why they felt the need to do something new in the middle of Ten's run. It was okay, but seemed unnecessary.

Someone needs to write it.... :( lol, we might have to tackle the burden.) Cloen and Rose might be good as well!

The "You leave the brakes on" line was hilarious until someone pointed out that meant every Time Lord ever left the brake on, since every TARDIS in the history of the show made that noise.

Then... no, it's still hilarious. *handwaves* Alex Kingston's delivery and Matt Smith making TARDIS noises is one of the best moments ever.

WHAT IS THE RABBIT THING? I meant to Google it but sort of forgot.

Eleven making the TARDIS noise with his mouth was one of my first moments of true 100% fondness for Eleven. IT'S SO AWESOME.

Yeah, I do find Eleven and Amy are unfortunate in that they are sort of boring on their own, buuut they're not on their own very often so I guess it all works out? lirl Also, yeah, I am so tired of the teasing about whether or not River is his wife or his dog or the Master or himself or whatever the hell OMG I DON' CARE. I can say however that there are some people who are very very intrigued by this plotline and the never-ending game of teasing Moffat is playing with the audience. I am decidedly not one of them. I like River when she's, as you said, getting down to business, but find myself rolling my eyes whenever the ~mystery of her comes up.

FWIW the Angels didn't start to lose their interest for me until the second of this two-parter, but yeah.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-17 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Sam would be dismantling the TARDIS while Daniel would demand to be taken everywhere in history. XD

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-17 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
HA! They're all like old people riding the brakes! XD

MWAH.

Yeah. I'm just not craving those little defining moments between them.

Really? It just seems like a tedious tease. Of course several years ago I swore off crap like that - it'll get me to switch off instead of tantalize to watch more.

I'm glad that it's only a minor element, otherwise I'd probably be zooming away.

Hmm.

I MEAN THIS IN THE NICEST WAY POSSIBLE... I've always wanted to try this:

I got her meaning immediately, so I was laughing so damn hard throughout that entire conversation.

[identity profile] shinkonokokoro.livejournal.com 2011-01-17 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
OMG, YES! I think Daniel and the Doctor would get on famously. At least he and Ten would. :) I think Nine and Jack and Teal'c would get on well. And Rose and Sam would probably commisserate well over the Doctor and Jack. :)

I had always assumed that they were an American thing originally, so i was quite surprised to learn otherwise. Oh, Ann Summers.

I did so like the angels in Blink. I did 'not' like the angels when they returned. They weren't scary anymore.

And as far as I cant remember every tardis in every episode made that noise. That means that no one on Gallifrey ever knew how to run a tarids correctly.

So who taught River "not" to leave the brakes on???

[identity profile] kammgirl.livejournal.com 2011-01-17 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
OT: Again forgive me if I am way behind on things, but are you just watching S5 now?

[identity profile] shinyopals.livejournal.com 2011-01-17 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I AM JUST COMMENTING TO SUPPORT THE INCREASED RIVER APPRECIATION.

I think for me it's the cheesy RAWR face. Understated is generally more creepy.

She's the Master! Or maybe Romana. :D

Slowly catching up, yeah. Well, I watched the first 2 eps back when they aired, but wandered off. I'm trying again.
