The Lodger

BWAH! That pretty much sums it up. XD

This episode was fun and light. Originally it was a Ten comic where he crashed with Mickey, which was Mickey's personal hell. (Mickey, PLEASE tell me that you and Martha bitch about the Doctor a lot. XD) It could have been hilarious if Eleven bunked with Rory, but this guy was cute. (Craig, was it?)

There's nothing really deep to say about this episode, but I do have a few questions.
  • THE DOCTOR CAN FRICKIN TALK TO CATS??

  • THE DOCTOR CAN HEADBUTT HIS MEMORIES INTO PEOPLE??

  • SOMEONE'S BEEN BUILDING A TARDIS?? DO WE GET TO KNOW WHO??

  • NO REALLY. THE DOCTOR CAN FRICKIN TALK TO CATS??

The Lodger is the funniest episode omg, I genuinely enjoyed it so much. The comic is pretty terrible but the episode is so hilarious IDEK.

THE DOCTOR IS A MAN OF MANY TALENTS, MICHELLE.

BUT...

Hmmm. Maybe the cat in Fear Her was taunting him. :D

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-27 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
It probably did!!

[identity profile] azarsuerte.livejournal.com 2011-01-27 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
I am that rare bird who actually did not like The Lodger very much. In fact, it was probably my least favorite episode of the season. :-o I guess I just don't buy that the Doctor could be THAT BAD at acting human only one regeneration after having *been* human for a while. Yes, Eleven is more alien than his immediate predecessors (going all the way back to Four in some ways), but not because he doesn't *know* how humans act. He's certainly spent enough time around them by now to have a clue or two. ;-)

There were some cute moments, but overall I found it disappointing. I know I'm in the minority on that, but I'm in the minority on a lot of things (not in Who fandom specifically but in general *g*) so it doesn't bug me. *grin*

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-27 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I didn't find the Silurian ep as boring as everyone else did, so I can't throw any stones at you. :D

[identity profile] azarsuerte.livejournal.com 2011-01-27 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
Hee! I didn't find it that boring either. Cried like a baby when we lost Rory (although I think I'd heard rumors by that point that he'd be back. again) but wasn't bored. Honestly, I don't think I was really bored by any of them. Liked some a lot more than others, even disliked a couple pretty strongly, but not bored. Maybe I'm easy to please. ;-)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-27 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
I'd say that's a good thing!

[identity profile] azarsuerte.livejournal.com 2011-01-27 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I hope so anyway! ;-)

It's just...I'm not one of those people who'll say RTD did nothing right. He did, after all, create several characters whom I still love beyond all reasoning (and some I don't, but that's true of any writer) and there were more than a few episodes he wrote that I *did* in fact enjoy very much. :-) (And one or two Moff eps that I hate to this day. *coughGirlintheFireplacecough*) But I think things got so dark and depressing (IMO) towards the end of his run that I really *needed* the lighter touch; the more fairy-tale-like vision of the universe; the more well-adjusted Doctor. Does that make sense? :-)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-27 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
It makes perfect sense! I was getting beyond tired of the angst at the end myself.

(Although so far I'm finding S5 at the other extreme and I'm having a hard time really getting into any of the characters.)

[identity profile] azarsuerte.livejournal.com 2011-01-27 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
It's funny, I know a lot of people feel that way and I can understand why, but I felt like I had a handle on both Amy *and* Eleven halfway through The Eleventh Hour. :-) Rory took a bit longer because he was in comparatively less of the episode, but...*shrug*

I can't even say if it required more inference than RTD's characters because it just felt *that* clear to me. And nothing that happened over the rest of the season really upset that conclusion, so I'm assuming that means I got it right. ;-)

I *did* feel the characterization in the Christmas special wasn't what it could've been, but I don't want to say more than that for fear of spoiling. *g* But then I've always been a bit off on the Specials anyway: I LIKED Voyage of the Damned.

Of course he can head-butt his memories. Just like he can smell other Time Lords. :D

I bet his toes do something too!

Oh, now that... that's just cruel. I am now going to spend the next 48 hours trying to figure out what his toes do. DAMN YOU

Maybe...they grow hair at super speed! There. Now you can sleep. ;)

The most useful of all possible skills.

IS THAT WHAT HAPPENS WHEN HE CONCENTRATES REALLY HARD ON NOT GROWING A BEARD?

Time Lord evolution clearly took care of the important issues.

I loved the Lodger!

And besides all the excellent one liners, there were two screencaps of when he head-butted with Craig you might be interested in:

C/P my feelings on The Lodger from my S5 Top 11 Eleven Moments Picspam like a boss, even though they're SO inadequate to describe how much I absolutely love and adore this episode.

"These, these are your keys."

"I can stay?!"

"Yeah, you're weird and you can cook. That's good enough for me. Right. Outdoor, front door, your door."

"My door. My place! My gafe! Haha! Me with a key!"

"And listen, Mark and I, we have an arrangement where if you ever need me out of your hair, just give me a shout. 'Kay?"

"Why would I want that?"

"In case you want to bring someone round, a girlfriend or a… boyfriend…"

"Oh, I will. I'll shout if that happens. Yes. Something like,
'I WAS NOT EXPECTING THIS!' By the way, that - the rot. I've got the strangest feeling we shouldn't touch it."

This entire episode. Gah. I adore it.

The whole "Doctor tries to act human" thing is simply inspired, because the more I watched the episode, the more I realized, it's not so much that Eleven doesn't know how humans really act; it's that he kind of just doesn't really care. He's so wonderfully oblivious and flippant and meddling and I just adore him! The entire episode was comedy gold, along with a few touching character moments. And Eleven conversed with a cat. And told a customer to hold because he had to eat a biscuit. ♥

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-27 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, he totally doesn't care. XD

And I thought the whole key thing was fun! For once the Doctor gets keys to somewhere instead of handing them out!

THIS IS ACTUALLY MY FAVORITE EPISODE OF SERIES 5.

LOL. WHATEVER WHATEVER. IT'S HILARIOUS. It's the first episode where I was really fond of Eleven.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2011-01-27 11:57 am (UTC)(link)
Amy's Choice is my #1 but this is #2. I spent the whole episode going LOL MATT SMITH, YOU ARE WONDERFUL.

[identity profile] firstofoct.livejournal.com 2011-01-27 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
SAME HERE.

With this episode I was just growing more fond of Eleven every second, and I really needed an episode like that.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-27 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
XD I think Amy's Choice and Vincent and the Doctor would come ahead of this for me, but it's definitely the fun one of the series.

[identity profile] beck-liz.livejournal.com 2011-01-27 12:40 pm (UTC)(link)
*snerk* There are times when I think this episode is an AU solely for the "talk to cats" and "memory headbutt" instances. I have a feeling neither of those things will EVER BE REFERRED TO AGAIN.

I just went to check and see if the writer was a one-off, but he's actually written several DW eps and a lot of SJA eps, so I don't even know where the above came from.

I wasn't sure about this episode on the first airing, but on reflection I like it quite a lot, despite (or maybe because of) the major ridiculousness of it.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-27 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
There was so much random in it! It edges up to parody, but not quite.

LOL random Time Lord powers. XD
