Of the fannish persuasion.

This is probably a big reason why I tend towards canon pairings: I like things to squee at. After watching Ugly Betty, I read a couple Daniel/Betty fics. Ones that made me say, "Yeah, all right! Rock on, Daniel/Betty!" (My head seems to be having an embarrassing Michael Damian thing going on.) But when I go back to the show, there's very little to actually squee at. In fact, except for the last couple of episodes I didn't even want the two of them together.

Not that I love the pairing enough to turn fannish about it, but it made me realize that canon pairings are way more fun for me. I need an onscreen fix!

I've realized I only really go for non-canon ships when I have actual issues with the canon ones. In Ugly Betty about the time in season 2 when I started seriously disliking Betty/Henry and always hated Betty/Gio I glommed on to Betty/Daniel. I also tend not to let go once I pick a ship, so Betty/Matt didn't have much chance when it came around, but if I'd started watching the series at a different point it might have because I didn't actually dislike it, it was just a less interesting Betty/Daniel as far as I saw it.

Ugh. Henry and Gio. Just...ugh. Both of those guys needed to be called on a hell of a lot of bullshit.

Thinking about other shows, when I don't like a pairing I tend to ignore it or grimace through it. I'm not sure I'd ship another pairing just due to loathing another though.

Ha! I usually prefer canon too but I was always sort of rooting for Daniel and Betty? Sometimes I get onboard a BFF ship and go WELL CLEARLY THEY ARE IN LOVE AND JUST DONT KNOW IT YET which is how I felt about Daniel and Betty.

Maybe it helps that I watched the first few seasons as they aired? More time to think about it.

I wonder how I would have felt watching it as it aired. Hmmm.

Not liking canon ship doesn't directly lead to me finding another, but liking a canon ship tends to keep me from doing much with speculative ships. not liking canon opens the door to me seeing other options though and I am a pretty compulsive shipper.

It's kind of what happened to me with Robin Hood too. It wasn't until I realized I hated the Robin/Marian relationship that I saw the potential in Guy/Marian and got interested (and then had my hopes stomped on).

Actually, that might well be a factor. I marathoned s1 of UB and barely saw the B/D idea. But somewhere in s2, possibly in part because I wasn't marathoning it, I started to think about the shipping differently that just what was happening at the moment on the show.

Ah, I see now.

I'm sort of a reluctant shipper. A pairing basically has to grab me by the throat before I ship anything. :D

*nods* I think it has an impact, definitely. And after losing interest in S3, I recently finished up the series over Christmas when I heard that Daniel and Betty kind of got an ending together. :p
