Free: Fic Snip 2

May as well clean out more fic stuff. The beginning of another S/J fic that's free to a good home. This one takes place at the beginning of S9. (Karen? I *swear* I didn't remember the Area 51 stuff when I betaed your fic. I wrote this 2 years ago!)

Jack watched her from behind a wall of glass. She was facing away from him, but he knew her expression from her slightly hunched yet ridged posture over the table in front of her. He could *see* that expression. Of course, this was entirely the wrong setting and she was wearing the wrong clothes. A pang of nostalgia hit him like...not a ton of bricks. That was far too cliché.

Carter jabbed violently at something in front of her.

Jack smirked and tapped on the glass.

She turned with first surprise and then a smile. It wasn't one of those full-blown Carter grins, but it was good enough. He pushed open the door.

"What are you doing here?" she asked. "Not that you can't be here, sir," she hastily added.

"Just came from the SGC. The plane had to stop to refuel."

Carter crossed her arms. "A plane from Colorado to Washington had to stop in Nevada to refuel?"

"Yeah, I'm not too sure about the pilot."

She gave him a small chuckle. But when her eyes moved to his shoulder, her smiled turned forced. "Congratulations, by the way."

He thought about making a joke about her invitation getting lost in the mail, but just managed a "thanks."

"I should have been there."

"Yeah, you should have."

Carter cleared her throat and turned to her pad of paper, poking at it with her pen.

He hadn't meant it to come out like that. Well, maybe he did. He was getting a little more than tired of their familiar "everything's okay" rut.

Everything was okay when she had suddenly decided to transfer to Area 51, packing up and moving within a week after announcing her decision. Everything was okay when Jack then decided to take that job in Washington that they'd been dangling in front of him, and packed up almost as quickly. And everything was most definitely okay when they hadn't spoken even once since she had moved.

"You want to get some dinner?" Carter asked, still concentrating on poking at the paper.

"That sounds..." He almost said 'okay.' "...good."
