It's called BAD product but GREAT Marketing. Or maybe it's justthat total blanket coverage onto almost every computer in the universe. Hell, I own a Mac and have it on my computer. Not many other choices out there for me.
I =know=! I hate Word with a vengeance, and WP was so lovely *sobs* Never did WP screw up a report, table, indentation, never did WP corrupt a file.. Oh how I miss WP :-|
Because MS Word had a Windows version and WP took forever bringing one out, and when they did it had all sorts of issues. By the time they straightened things out, Word was way ahead.
I actually used to use WP for Windows for a while, and it still exists as part of a suite, but it's just not what it used to be.
And I still have a "Word Perfect" coffee mug that I got at Windows World '92 in Sydney. I always liked that program better.

That makes sense. Poor WP.

I can't remember what version I got up to. 7 maybe? That was in my old job where I had a big say in software and hardware. But then with the new job it was all Word.

Yeah. The myriad of DOS printer drivers that they'd built up to produce great results was effectively worked around by the fact that Windows used it's own drivers. Many of their keyboard shortcuts conflicted with general Windows shortcut keys - ALT-F4 in WP was "block text", but "close program" in Windows. And they just couldn't market as well as MS did. It's yet another example of how the same company developing the O/S and the tools enabled it to have a significant advantage over it's rivals.
Corel WordPerfect Office 12.0 does exist, and is given away for free by computer makers like Dell with new machines (to get MS Office you have to fork out a couple of hundred dollars more), but is primarily a niche product with users mostly in the Legal profession (I've no idea why), and among some Universities.
But then with the new job it was all Word.
MS Office is pretty much the standard in most corporations these days. It's just a matter of everyone else using it, so you have to as well.

Yeah, I remember those reveal codes…

And WP had a kick-ass search feature. It actually worked as opposed to the Microsoft version.
I can't believe Macs have been invaded with the mediocrity as well.
