Boxing Day

After taking a look at Wikipedia's Boxing Day entry, I'm still not exactly clear on what it is. I mean, do people just hang out, grazing on Christmas leftovers? Or are there modern traditions? And why the hell don't we have it here? When I first heard the term as a kid, I thought it meant people boxed - as in, in a ring. With gloves. I'm pretty sure that doesn't happen. Then when I was older I heard someone say it was a day people boxed up their old crap to give away while nipping at the Christmas Cheer. However, Wikipedia didn't mention anything about drunken spring cleaning.

Personally it's always meant stuffing my face with the contents of the 20 hundred selection boxes well meaning relatives give children for xmas.

As I understand it, traditionally people used to open presents from family on Christmas Day and then go round visiting friends on Boxing Day, giving and opening presents. These days it's just an excuse for a second Bank Holiday, and in my family we pull crackers on BD, not CD, but I'm not sure how traditional it is.

Now that's my kind of holiday!

That's another thing I want - crackers! :D And that's a nice idea - family one day, friends another.

what the hell *is* boxing day to begin with?

[identity profile] suzvoy.livejournal.com 2005-12-27 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
It's so named because that's when the money for the poor was put in/collected from boxes in churches. For us it's always meant popping out to local shops to see if there are any good deals, then coming home and eating a lot *g*.

Ah. You'd think there'd be enough to give more than once a year.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2005-12-27 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)

White is the only color shirt you are allowed to wear!

Boxing day's traditionally nowadays when people give a tip to the postman, milkman, dustmen sometimes etc etc. I wish I saw my postman to give him a tip as he's great!

Yesterday I just went over to my parents and caught up with more eating, drinking and watching the fab Christmas Day programmes that we videoed (e.g. Dr Who) :)

Well we also lack bank holidays here ;)
So the few holidays we take 2 days for;)
But then we only have 5 official holidays where 3 are 2 days and 2 are only 1 day.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2005-12-27 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I just did a count and I think we have 7 federal holidays that we get the day off for - they're all 1 day except Thanksgiving where we get 2 days. So sounds like we're even! :D

[identity profile] mylo1012.livejournal.com 2005-12-27 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
hehe, I demand more free days!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2005-12-27 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too!

[identity profile] mylo1012.livejournal.com 2005-12-27 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
A national LJ day might be worth 2 whole days, dont you think?

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2005-12-27 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Hell yeah!

Boxing Day here in Aus is basically a day to either recover, get smashed again, party with family/friends, go to the beach, eat leftovers with family/friends, do nothing, play with presents, etc.

Personally, I went to the beach with friends, then went shopping, then wen bowling and was over at the family-in-laws for leftovers in the evening.

In short, Boxing Day rocketh muchly. Hope that adds to the completion of your education. :)

It's always important to get the Australian perspective on things, I think. Life would be less....fulfilled without it, I think. ;)

Absolutely!! :D
