Sunday night ramblings

  • I have to admit to watching some of the Puppy Bowl today. I mean...it's puppies! I kinda wish it was 1) a bigger area, 2) there were more things for the puppies to actually do, and 3) wee-er puppies. Didn't they have a toy football in there last year? But puppies!

  • I just couldn't get interested in actually watching the Superbowl. I'd switch it to that channel for a minute and then wonder why I was watching. I was barely interested the year San Diego went, so there wasn't much chance with this. I did catch some of the Rolling Stones though. Rock on, old dudes! I say do it until you can't.

  • I saw the poll on [livejournal.com profile] anr's journal and it made me think - did I like this episode? Did I hate it? Love it? I really can't decide. The cut up/flashback episode style is starting to grate. If they hadn't done it before, I'm sure I would have been fine with it, so I'm not sure if I can knock it just because it happened to follow others of the same style. I'll grouse about using it too much in the whole series though.

However, the whole Starbuck vs. Kat storyline was very provocative. I actually found myself feeling all bothered by Kat and had very much an "oh no you didn't, little miss thang" attitude throughout. And was feeling *very* defensive of Starbuck, which in retrospect is surprising. I've never really considered myself a giant Starbuck fangirl.

But I think it was more about my expectations of a traditional hero than about Starbuck herself. So many stories suspend heroes in time -- they were great once and they'll be great forever. This is what I've come to expect from a hero. Even stories where you see the hero later in life tend to do this. (Take just about any war movie that ends with two old men proclaiming, "we were the best.") So it wasn't easy watching a hero, who I thought was at the top of her game, suddenly being edged out by another. And more than that, have her realize that she probably won't be the one to save the day in the end. It was tough to take, but BSG is good at shoving the viewer out of the comfort zone.

So did I like the episode? Anything that can evoke such a strong reaction in me deserves credit. I think once it's had a chance to mellow with age, I'll probably realize it was a damn good episode.

  • Have just checked and Doctor/Rose is still just about the most adorable pairing on the planet. Am still smitten. (Oh drama! Why am I always drawn to the cute ones? They always produce such nauseating fic.)

  • And speaking of fic, I've added the dino!fic to my writing journal. I promise *nothing*. You can quit bugging me now.

  • ETA: HAM. I ate a lot of ham this weekend and have lots of leftover ham in my fridge. Just thought you'd all want to know.

I am also completely smitten by the Doctor and Rose as well. They are just so adorable.

Watched the last episode of Doctor Who again last night and got a cheesy grin on my face again from the line - "come here. You need a Doctor" *happy sigh*

Yeah, I'm still not sure what to think about Scar. You had some interesting points, though, and I think I might have had a similar reaction.

This season so far has an entirely diffferent feel than Season One. Not better - not worst. Just different. I haven't liked this season as much as season one but all-in-all it's still some of the best stuff on television today. I'm not giving it up for Desperate Housewives.

And I can't wait till the Doctor hits SciFi. I know, I know. I could probably find the episodes on line but with things the way they are, I can wait. I've heard a lot of good things about the show so I'm anxious to see it.

I really, really want to watch Dr. Who...but a) don't know where to find it or when it comes on in America and b) it's strangely intimidating since this is like the 457th incarnation of it.

And as far as Scar goes...well, I'm an enormous Kara fan, so for me it was interesting from that perspective. But at the same time I felt like all the Anders stuff just came out of nowhere (and I liked Anders), not to mention the fact that I am suddenly getting very, very sick of the whole "*insert hour* earlier" thing. It doesn't hurt anyone, and usually doesn't hurt the plot, to just start at the beginning.

And I don't ship Lee/Kara so I didn't particularly care about that scene very much. ;)

teeny dino hands...

Damn them!

I know! *gets goofy*

And a new Doctor didn't help. They're still just as cute.

It was definitely an episode that gnawed at you but you have to decide if you like being gnawed at. ;)

Yep, my feelings exactly.

It's very different from BSG - no deep allegories here. Just a lot of goofy fun.

Normally I don't mind, I think it's just that RM is being an idiot. He's apparently saying in the open that this season doesn't work so well timing wise or something. Which yeah, is obvious. We get nothing from Kara and all of a sudden we have to believe that this has been going on (same with Lee's episode last week). If he knows it's wrong, he should edit things and not assume us being lenient because he knows he sucks.

a) It will be on the Sci Fi channel starting Friday, March 17 at 9 p.m.

b) I had never seen a single Doctor Who ep before watching the new series. From what I understand, it really is a whole new creature. Yes, the premise is still there that it starts out with the ninth incarnation of the Doctor, but you really won't feel lost by not knowing anything else. I still haven't seen any older shows and I feel fine.

And as far as Scar goes...well, I'm an enormous Kara fan, so for me it was interesting from that perspective. But at the same time I felt like all the Anders stuff just came out of nowhere (and I liked Anders),

Yeah, everything seemed pretty sudden. It would have been nice to see a hint of that earlier.

not to mention the fact that I am suddenly getting very, very sick of the whole "*insert hour* earlier" thing. It doesn't hurt anyone, and usually doesn't hurt the plot, to just start at the beginning.

Yes, it's getting old.

And I don't ship Lee/Kara so I didn't particularly care about that scene very much. ;)

I thought it was bound to happen and had pretty predictable results. Overall it was interesting to Kara's character but I'm not going to go out and make 50 icons of it. ;)

That's...odd.

Yeah. :-\

Have you seen any of the trailers for the new series yet?

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2006-02-06 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah, baby! :D

[identity profile] diavestra.livejournal.com 2006-02-06 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
do I know you?

Yes. I'm the one who sent you DW eps that you refuse to watch.

Haha, Michelle, I *totally* knew A.j. was squeeing about the dino!fic and not some stupid cute puppies. Heh.

*gingerly backs off from dino!fic pleading and gives MV plenty of space and room*

That's right! Or I'll...do something really threatening. Like...

*wanders off to find coffee*

[identity profile] diavestra.livejournal.com 2006-02-07 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't *refused* to watch them. I just haven't had time. And now that I'm back, I've spent most of my free time (and time that wasn't supposed to be free) sleeping. I hate being sick!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2006-02-07 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Awww. Sounds like someone needs a big bowl of soup and a Doctor! ;)
