Warriors of the Deep (Five, Tegan, Turlough)
And some icons from the episode:
- There were actually 4 different parties in this one, which had me slightly confused at first. There were two warring human factions, and then there were the Sea Devils and the Silurians, who had teamed up to get rid of the humans by trying to get them to kill each other. It was sort of like...if the Little House on the Prairie fandom teamed up with the Iron Chef fandom in order to take down the DW fandom due to general idiocy and mucking up the internet. And they start things off by making a "ROSE WAS THE BEST COMPANION EVER AND EVERYONE ELSE SUCKS" post in the Doctor Who forums.
- Loads of running around in a sea base. ("Moon base, sea base, space base... they build these things out of kits. Human design - you've got a thing about kits. This place was put together like a flat-pack wardrobe, only bigger. And easier.") At one point the Silurians unleash
two guys in a rubber suita Myrka that waddles around zapping people until the Doctor kills it with a light beam.
Rawr? Helloooooo. Rawr! AHHHH! LIGHT! JEEZ! Thanks, Doctor Dickweed! - I really must document any time I see bubblewrap. Here it's used to make a design statement.
Bedding...of The Future!
"As a citizen of The FutureTM I enjoy my futuristic bedding that in no way pops when you sit on it. I also enjoy my Thriller clothes. Thriller clothes...of The Future." - In the end rocks fall, all die. Seriously. Everyone on the sea base (but the TARDIS crew) dies. I think they were going for a cautionary tale about the Cold War. Did I say "think"? Heh heh. The last line of the episode is of the Doctor standing over everyone's dead bodies and saying "there should have been another way!"
Anyway, the Doctor kept going on about how the Sea Devils and the Silurians were noble creatures and were 20,000 times better than idiot humans, but the episode failed to show any of that nobleness. I've seen one of the Three era episode with the Silurians, and in that episode they were a lot more complex of a character (even with the rubber suit). But that aired probably a decade before this episode and so it would have been really nice to have seen some of that complexity again, instead of the Doctor forever saying, "Yes they're trying to blow up the planet, but they're really wonderful people who are way better than humans. For serious."
