For some reason -- *sniffs my water suspiciously* -- I've assigned dog breeds to characters. This is fandom, and sometimes you do weird shit in fandom. So here are dogs for Doctor Who, Sherlock, The Vampire Diaries and Gossip Girl. (The last two are for
goldy_dollar. Just so we're clear.)
The Doctor (DW) is a Border Collie. According to sources, they need constant companionship, praise, and extensive exercise. However, they are considered the most intelligent breed. Due to their demanding personalities and need for mental stimulation and exercise, many border collies develop neurotic behaviors in households that are not able to provide for their needs. They are famous for chewing holes in walls and digging holes out of boredom. Rose (DW) is a Bichon Frise. They are gentle mannered, sensitive, playful and affectionate. The Bichon Frise loves human company and demands much of your attention. They are generally very sociable and does well with a family that takes them everywhere. They are charming, affectionate, and intelligent. Martha (DW) is a Shetland Sheepdog. It's one of the most intelligent breeds. The Shetland sheepdog is an outstanding companion dog and is intensely loyal. It is lively, intelligent, trainable, and willing to please. Shelties become unhappy when left for long periods of time without companionship. Donna (DW) is a Pekingese. They're supremely confident, and one of the most independent (and stubborn) of the toy breeds. Most Pekingese are loyal to their owner without being cloying. This proud, self-possessed dog won't meekly submit to mischief or rough handling from anyone. They can be exasperatingly willful, but also sensitive, and resent being jerked around or even scolded. Eleven & Co (DW) can be cats. Damned if you know what they've been up to, and probably better just leaving them be. Sherlock is an Afghan Hound. The typical Afghan Hound can be aloof and dignified, but happy and clownish when playing. This breed has a high prey drive and may not get along with small animals. They are also extremely slow to take instruction and command. John (Sherlock) is a Jack Russell Terrier. Jack Russells are working dogs that are athletic and fearless. They have a tremendous amount of energy for their size, a fact which can sometimes lead to trouble involving larger animals. A solitary or sedate lifestyle is not suited to a Jack Russell Terrier and they need regular exercise. Elena (TVD) is a Bernese Mountain Dog. They are affectionate, loyal, faithful, stable, intelligent, but sometimes shy. The majority of Bernese are friendly to people, and other dogs. They often get along well with other pets such as cats, horses, vampires, etc. Stefan (TVD) is a Chihuahua. The breed tends to be fiercely loyal to one particular owner and in some cases may become over protective of the person, especially around other people or animals. They do not always get along with other breeds, and tend to have a "clannish" nature. They can also flip their shit. Damon (TVD) is a Doberman. Although these dogs are known for their aggression, they are extremely loyal. They can easily learn to 'Respect and Protect' their owners, however they do not adapt well to new masters. Like Chihuahuas, they can also flip their shit. Gossip Girls are Chow Chows. All of them. Doesn't matter the character. They just are. |

The Beagle has an even temper and gentle disposition. Described in several breed standards as "merry", they are amiable and generally neither aggressive nor timid. They enjoy company, and although they may initially be standoffish with strangers, they are easily won over. They make poor guard dogs for this reason, although their tendency to bark or howl when confronted with the unfamiliar makes them good watch dogs. In a 1985 study conducted by Ben and Lynette Hart, the Beagle was given the highest excitability rating, along with the Yorkshire Terrier, Cairn Terrier, Miniature Schnauzer, West Highland White Terrier and Fox Terrier.
Yeah, my vote goes for beagle.

Beagles are intelligent, but as a result of being bred for the long chase are single-minded and determined, which can make them hard to train. They are generally obedient but can be difficult to recall once they have picked up a scent and are easily distracted by smells around them. They do not generally feature in obedience trials; while they are alert, respond well to food-reward training, and are eager to please, they are easily bored or distracted.
Jack is totally a beagle.
