Rambling

After how many years of seeing it, I still don't understand fic plagiarism. Is it for the smattering of positive reinforcement of comments? Fans cross fandom lines so much these days, that odds are usually good they'll eventually be caught. Ignoring the basic fact that it's lazy and moronic to copy work, it seems like the risk/reward ratio is way off, especially with communities logging IPs and so on.

Randomly, I'd read the illicit fic a day or two ago, and had been grumbling about the dubious consent issues. Sherlock having sex with a delusional and ill John isn't romantic. I don't care how you try and spin it. It's icky and it should have been labeled. And, you know, not plagiarized.

lol some poor lady who used to beo n my flist had her fic plagiarized a while back, and I guess i shouldn't find it as funny as I do but omg they took her Merlin AU and used find/replace to make it Jack/Ten and omg it was the funniest thing I have ever read.

I don't really get it either though. Like... LOL IDK I just don't get what's rewarding about people praising something you didn't actually write.

Jack/Ten is automatically funny for so many reasons. XD

I'd once had a SG-1 fic plagiarized, and they actually turned it into a Doctor/Rose fic. OH NO YOU DIDN'T.

Yeah, to feel good that your find and replace function works?

IT WAS AN AU TOO IN WHICH JACK/ARTHUR WAS A MOVIE START AND TEN/MERLIN BECAME HIS NEW PA omg omg it was the best. They replaced mention of Merlin's magic with "sonic screwdriver" and there were great lines where Donnagwen was like "he doesn't like to tell people about his sonic screwdriver".

I'd once had a SG-1 fic plagiarized, and they actually turned it into a Doctor/Rose fic.

LOL LOL that is the worst.

"he doesn't like to tell people about his sonic screwdriver".

*SNORTS*

LOL LOL that is the worst.

Which made me ponder (for about 5 seconds) if I could turn old SG-1 fics into D/R fics...

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2011-06-24 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh and also Merlin smoked, and they replaced "cigarette" with "banana" and there were lots of times in the middle of like, tense scenes, it would be like "The Doctor angsted and pulled out a banana and started sucking on it." O rly, Doctor.

It's um possible I did that to one of my HP fics once. Because I... am a bad person.

BWAH!!!!

HA! I decided that I'd be way too bugged by the characterization to do it.

I am so not up on Sherlock gossip- what was the fic?

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-06-24 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Here's the post about it:

http://sherlockbbc.livejournal.com/2648329.html

It was a fic where John was sick and Sherlock took care of him.

[identity profile] orange-crushed.livejournal.com 2011-06-24 02:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah. Thanks for the link. I skipped that fic when I saw it, it didn't seem like my cup of tea. And I didn't even realize it was a cup of tea that had originally belonged to someone else.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-06-24 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Sadly, I've been reading practically everything that comes along these days. Unless it's a vampire AU or something. :D

[identity profile] goldy-dollar.livejournal.com 2011-06-24 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, I so don't get this. I mean, there is no monetary value in fic?? So what's the point for taking credit for something you didn't even write? It's fake fannish kudos!

Also I think you should read Sherlock AU vampire fic.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-06-24 02:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd sooner read character death fic.

[identity profile] goldy-dollar.livejournal.com 2011-06-24 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Generally you do have to die to become a vampire.

[identity profile] goldy-dollar.livejournal.com 2011-06-24 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
But would John still love Sherlock if he was a creature of the night!!!

It doesn't to me either!

I don't understand plagiarism at all. Especially now with the Internet. Someone somewhere has read what's being stolen no matter how obscure the plagiarist thinks it is.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-06-24 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, pretty much.

[identity profile] yourebrilliant.livejournal.com 2011-06-24 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
God seriously? I actually don't know which of those two things saddens me more.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-06-24 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Just a whole big ball of badness.

and apparently the girl tried to accuse ME of plagiarizing!

OMG.

Though she picked the crappy stories I wrote when I was 11 and 12. WHY WOULD YOU PLAGIARIZE THAT!

:D Awww. Maybe they spoke to her/him?

[identity profile] skippity-doo.livejournal.com 2011-06-24 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I want to make a snippy comment about how it lands you a book deal, yesI'mlookingatyouCassie_Claire, but that would seem churlish.
