Have finally watched the last Harry Potter movie.

  • I was really disappointed that there wasn't an audience for the final showdown between Harry and Voldemort. NEEDED WITNESSES.

  • The Malfoys just walking off seemed a bit odd.

  • The 19 years later didn't look as bad on film as it did in still pictures. I remember seeing spoiler pics before the movie came out and everyone looked fairly horribly makeup-ed. But it didn't look as bad on film. Also Ginny was smokin'!

  • LOL Albus Severus Potter. I really can only assume that Ginny's been far too busy with her professional sports career to pay much attention to whatever emoish shenanigans Harry gets up to. Things like climbing up mountains to stare into the distance, lighting candles at Snape's grave, and naming their children after every dead person he knows.

  • Totally disappointed we didn't see the Ravenclaw common room! I have no idea what the Hufflepuff room looks like, but Ravenclaw sounded like it totally kicked every other common room's ass.

  • I think Snape came off better in the movie than in the book, but it was all still fairly creepy to me. Everything about his "love" for Lily screamed UNHEALTHY WRONG BADNESS to me. It was sweet when they were tiny children, but quickly went south. At least the whole "look at me" at the end didn't seem nearly as creepy as it did in the book.

  • And speaking of Snape, did his death happen that way in the book? Voldemort: It is vital to my plan and continued existence that you die, but I'll just wander off without making sure it actually happens.

  • Random thing - I found it really odd that James never spoke. Not in flashbacks or when he was ghosting around. I don't specifically remember if the book was super focused on Lily, but even Sirius had some words for Harry while Harry's father was...just sort of hanging out? Maybe he was just being a douche, like Snape liked to think of him.

  • McGonagall is awesome. Is it any wonder she was awesome when she lived at Downton Abbey?

HA! Overall I did like it! But I've pretty much enjoyed all the HP movies.

Sounds like you saw the "before" 19 years later pics; apparently they tried aging them up more and didn't like it and changed it.

Oh really? I probably did! :D (I mean, come on. At 37 you don't look that old.)

Or maybe you do in the Potterverse? Considering Snape is supposed to be about that age. :)

Lily and James are like 21 when they die and aged post-humously so being a wizard is hard on the looks I guess.

I like to think that Ten moonlighted as an actor to play that role, after badgering JKR for a part. XD

McGonagall is awesome. Is it any wonder she was awesome when she lived at Downton Abbey?

I loved McGonagall, any part she was in was instantly better.

But my favorite part was when she woke the stone guards(?) at the school and said she always wanted to do that and Molly gave her this look that said "I'm standing next to a crazy person."

[identity profile] janetmaca.livejournal.com 2011-11-13 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha, just butting in to say I just commented about the statues being my favourite part.

[identity profile] bittybye2000.livejournal.com 2011-11-13 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course, McGonagall was in the scene, so instantly better. And she looked so giddy.

[identity profile] janetmaca.livejournal.com 2011-11-13 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Right? I pretty much squealed from delight while seeing that scene. :D

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-11-13 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh yeah. I think my favorite was right before that when she laid the smack down on Snape. :D

My biggest problem with the movie was that final confrontation- what gave it real power and made it different from any other book or movie showdown, was that Harry did NOT kill Voldemort- he called him Tom (not in mockery but calling him by the name he had before he split himself, to call him back), and he offered him a stern mercy.

Voldemort rejected he Mercy and his own action in attacking Harry caused his death (as he had no more horcruxes).

This was rather the heart of the final book- and everything had built to it. In the movie it was a rather unsatisfying showdown at the O.K. Corral. Blech. Missed the whole point and I was bitterly disappointed.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-11-13 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally didn't remember that from the book - I read it a while ago. But that would have been fantastic! And really not hard at all to film. I have no idea why they didn't do that.

[identity profile] mornea.livejournal.com 2011-11-14 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
It really jumped out at me in the book! Because Harry's character arc NEEDED to end this way. He was a kid who was somewhat angry and bent on revenge to an extent, and he was a liar who trusted no one. In the last book Harry learns the importance of truth, and mercy. He's not angry- he's stern, no fool. But not possessed by anger and out to get the guy who killed his parents. Instead he reaches out to Tom-- who was once just like him! That is the conclusion to Harry's whole story. And it was completely missing from the film.

I loved how pleased McGonagall was when she had to make the statues alive. I pretty much squeed in the cinema. lol

I think Snape was a warning for mistaking obsession for love. *shrugs* That is the only thing right now that makes sense to me.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-11-13 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
:D It totally reminded me of how her character can get on DA. Loved it!

And Snape pretty much skeeves me out, no matter how you look at it.

[identity profile] janetmaca.livejournal.com 2011-11-13 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee! Really? Everyone (including my sister who does not hang out online discussing important things like fandom- just motherhood and hippy-dippy living) talks about DA and this is what has me thinking I should give it a go. lol

He is skeevy. The only time I really liked him was in GoF when he shoved Ron and Harry's head forward for talking. I don't know what that says me. lol

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-11-13 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
You should try it! It's one giant soap opera! XD

[identity profile] janetmaca.livejournal.com 2011-11-13 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee! Will do.

It bugged me so much that there was noa udience for their final battle! Wtf, movie! Ugh I hated that. AND THEN VOLDEMORT JUST EXPLODES INTO DUST, so just take Harry's word for it, you guys.

lol Snape came off better in the movie because they cut out the part where he called her a slur and she broke up with him. WHATEVER, SNAPE.

JAMES TOTALLY SPOKE IN THE BOOK. WHATEVER, MOVIE.

The bit with Snape's tears wasn't in the book, was it? That was another strange thing.

Maybe they didn't feel like paying the actor?

JAMES WAS A BAG OF DICKS AND NOTHING CAN CONVINCE ME OTHERWISE.

Lily was temporarily blinded by his really great hair and teenage hormones.

BWAH!!!!! It did seem like Lily was the exceptional one while James was just there.
