Well. That was sort of...boring. The Great Game was way better at creating this whole thing with Moriarty. But in this episode Moriarty sort of made no sense other than to show that he is insane, which isn't exactly a Great Rivalry. The road getting to Moriarty killing himself (okaaaaay) and Sherlock jumping off the building could have been done in half the time since not a whole lot happened.

I wonder if Mycroft knows in this version or if his place is taken by Molly. (Obvious that's what Sherlock wanted with her.)

The ending was pretty sad with John. "I was so lonely and you gave me so much. If you could do me one last favor and not be dead..." *SNIFF* Martin Freeman can do choked up really well.

I still want John to punch Sherlock when he comes back. And then hug him. And then the sex.

I might watch bits here and there again for the John/Sherlockness of it, but overall... MEH.

LOL @ BORING

I haven't seen it yet but rn I am laughing at people on Tumblr who are like GOLLY GEE SHERLOCK FAKING HIS DEATH WHAT AN UNEXPECTED PLOT TWIST I COULD NEVER HAVE SEEN COMING

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-01-15 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Are they serious? If so, ANOTHER POINT AGAINST TUMBLR.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-01-15 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
The ending was definitely the best part of the episode when Sherlock and John were talking to each other, and then John at the grave. The actors really pulled out the stops for those scenes. The rest of it though...

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2012-01-15 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
These are probably the same people who thought Eleven was going to die for real.

[identity profile] skippity-doo.livejournal.com 2012-01-15 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Well I didn't hate that one. Which surprised me.

Also my reaction to the ~TOTALLY UNEXPECTED AND IN NO WAY PREDICTABLE~ PLOT TWIST AT THE END was exactly the same as when they pulled that shit on me at the end of Wicked. Except louder, because I wasn't in a theatre full of other people.

Actually, I think it was more like "OH PISS OFF", but appropriate icon is still appropriate.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-01-15 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
XD There was no surprise for me, really. I was more interested in how they'd do it.

I liked the psychological set up of everything and the whole 'I'm going to turn the whole world against you' thing. But, yeah, I'm a bit disappointed that it didn't lead anywhere for Moriarty other than 'winning'.

I'm very glad that John never fell for it, not even for a second. Not even when Sherlock was telling him it was true. Those sorts of manipulations of loved ones irritate the fuck out of me.

I loved how Thompson wrote Molly. He made her awkward and fumbling but he didn't really shame her or demean her. That's been bugging me since A Study in Pink. And whilst it is obvious that Molly is involved in faking Sherlock's death, I really, REALLY want to know HOW! Because this isn't the 1890s and people know when someone is dead, especially when the body is found in the middle of London and not lost at the bottom of a waterfall.

No matter what you say about the motives of Moriarty, the episode was a whole lot better than The Blind Banker, though! And I think the emotions were brilliantly written.

On my dash, I've seen someone say that this is the greatest episode of television EVER.

[identity profile] jacksrubberduck.livejournal.com 2012-01-15 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
It all felt a bit obvious somehow.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-01-15 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmmmm.

ME TOO. JOHN IS AWESOME.

Exactly! And how did he survive in the first place? I'm wondering if knocking John down had something to do with it? To...do something while he was down? I don't see how though.

No matter what you say about the motives of Moriarty, the episode was a whole lot better than The Blind Banker, though! And I think the emotions were brilliantly written.

That's very true.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-01-15 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I don't mind that if it's a fun trip. Like last week's episode was fairly obvious, but it was FUN. This was just...okay, we have to get to this destination so grin and bear it until we get there.

[identity profile] goldy-dollar.livejournal.com 2012-01-15 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Michelle, your reaction posts don't leave me a lot to work with for my reaction post to your reaction post.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-01-15 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
John and Sherlock got handcuffed together and held hands instead of just dangling from each other! :D

Everyone started thinking that Sherlock was a psychopath, BUT JOHN DIDN'T. NOT EVEN WHEN SHERLOCK TRIED TO TELL HIM HE WAS. TRUE LOVE.

But really it was kind of boring.

[identity profile] goldy-dollar.livejournal.com 2012-01-15 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
THIS IS BETTER THANK YOU.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-01-15 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, and Sherlock has already started stalking John, as we saw at the end of the episode. (ACD canon had Holmes in disguise bumping in Watson and so on.)

I MIGHT BE ABLE TO RELATE TO YOUR STALKING THING.

[identity profile] goldy-dollar.livejournal.com 2012-01-15 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
You also read vampire AU fic so I think you can relate to a lot of my valid life choices.

Moriarty in Sherlock (as opposed to ACD's Moriarty) is seriously WTF to me. I was by turns enraged and truly touched by this episode, so 'meh' is pretty far from my reaction, but I'll admit that the plot as a whole (rather than the emotional focus specifically) really did drag on unnecessarily. And unbelievably, in terms of Sherlock not figuring out parts of it so much sooner.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-01-16 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
*NODS* It had good parts and lots of boring parts.

[identity profile] beck-liz.livejournal.com 2012-01-16 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually found it more engrossing than you did, although I have very little interest in Moriarty and am rather glad he's dead which (hopefully) means he won't be back. (I really do not get the people who are all "Ooooh, Moriarty/X Character, I'd love to read that!" Not only from my dislike of Moriarty, but because I've never been fond of enemy hate sex, which is why I've never been interested in Doctor/Master, even though I can easily see where it comes from.)

Most of it, of course, was my love of all the Sherlock/John stuff, but there were other things I loved. I loved that the thread about Donovan being sure from the first episode that one day Sherlock would turn out the bad guy came true. I.e., her conviction that it was so was enough to go over Lestrade's head (I assume) and assist Moriarty in ruining Sherlock's rep. I loved that Molly actually managed to surprise Sherlock and that she is clearly helping him with his not!death. And I almost wish Moriarty hadn't offed himself if only to see that Sherlock beat him in the end. But only almost. And John. My word, both Freeman and Cumberbatch totally deserve BAFTAs.

I still want John to punch Sherlock when he comes back. And then hug him. And then the sex.

This. There needs to be SO MUCH FANFIC out of this.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-01-16 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
It would almost be worth it to have Moriarty see his plans fail, wouldn't it? But then he'd pop up again and again. BAH. I have no desire to see Moriarty again and I hope they don't haul him out in some season's cliffhanger.

And they deserve many many awards!
