WHY IS SANSA/SANDOR A PAIRING?

Okay, normally even though I don't care for a pairing I can see why people would ship it. But this isn't even a matter of liking it - it's WHERE THE HELL IS IT? About the only time they've ever spent more than 10 seconds together was when he rescued her from the riot, and the way he talked to her/about her? Like a little kid. This is a book thing, isn't it? PLEASE TELL ME THIS IS A BOOK THING AND I HAVEN'T GONE CRAZY. THIS PAIRING (that is apparently the biggest ship in all of fandom?) CONFUSES ME LIKE NOTHING HAS CONFUSED ME BEFORE. THINGS THAT MAKE MORE SENSE THAN THIS PAIRING:

- MOFFAT'S RIVER PLOT
- OTTER/HEDGEHOG MPREG
- JACOB'S TV REVIEWS

lololol it's a book thing. I can't really see that much SanSan in the show, no matter how hard I squint.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
PHEW. I kept looking for things and there was nothing there! And I kept checking to see if I had missed any episodes or something! Seriously, I kept going back to the episode list!

I am in a secluded corner of GoT fandom so I don't know but I hope to God it isn't the biggest ship in all of fandom.

But anyway, in the book he's often the only one who is 'nice' to her when she gets beaten up (matter of perspective when everyone else is enjoying her being abused of course), he confides in her about his backstory etc. People who ship it, imo, blow it out of proportion because he's still a violent adult and she's a kid. But yeah, in the books there is quite a bit of interaction.

My sources (f!s, who never lies) says yes. XD

Oh dear. Yeah, that's all I've got.

It is a huge fandom pairing, and I don't get it either. I just don't. And I've read all the books. Most fanfic/commentary ship-wise based on the books has been San/San (and then Brienne/Jamie -- which I'm totally behind!)

[identity profile] muneca-brava.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, I don't get that. I could understand some people shipping it but biggest ship in fandom? At least Jaime/Brienne has something resembling canon foundation :P But ASoIaF just isn't a big shipping-fandom for me tbh. Other than Jaime/Cersei and maybe Jon/Ygritte I don't have any feelings on romantic couples, because anything happy will just get destroyed anyway :P

[personal profile] jedi_of_urth 2012-05-08 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I have a couple of shippy feels, but I don't invest in them. Often because my shippy feels couples will go books without seeing each other of end up dead. Or both.

Besides there's more than enough other stuff going on that has nothing to do with shipping (or only in the sense of how much trouble it's caused for Westeros) so I focus on that.

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
lol. Most of my shippy feels are tied up in Ned and Cat... AND WE ALL KNOW HOW THAT ENDED.

hahha. I do ship Jaime/Brienne even though this IS GRRM and I am dubious that both characters will survive the series... and Jon/Sansa in a "it'll never happen in canon, but I read fic because I think it's a really interesting potential dynamic" kind of way.

I honestly don't gt it in the books either, but I can at least kinda sorta squint and see why people ship it in the books. At least they have actual interactions unlike the show.

Like the "little bird" thing in the show makes no sense, but in the books he's been calling her that for a while because she's a "pretty little caged thing that repeats the pretty words shes told" (I quote is approximate because I don't pore over these scenes like the shippers do). And he's the first one to try and open her eyes to how bad the world was, that she *was* a caged thing, long before it actually came crashing down. I had to do a double take when they threw it into the show since it makes no sense without the explanation why he calls her that.

So yeah, it's a book thing, even if it's one I don't really get myself.

In the show they seem barely aware of each other.

As it was it seemed a pretty pitying thing to call her rather than a term of endearment. At least that's how it struck me when I saw it.

It's somewhere between endearing, pitying, and derisive. Mostly derisive at first, but the other two sort of creep in. Even as a non shipper I can see that he became kind of...more complicated toward her over the story; and I guess she did too. But I don't think they make any sense as a pairing, nope.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I like complicated relationships. Doesn't mean I automatically ship them.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2012-05-08 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah there's a difference between "I find this relationship complex and dark and interesting" and like I WANT THESE TWO TO MARRY AT THE END OF THE SERIES :'DDDDD.

It's even like that in the book, imo. Like... he obviously sees her as this pretty and fragile OBJECT that needs to be protected. It's not about her as an actual person, but she's this ideal of a lady who needs his protection.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Erg.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2012-05-08 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
The first time he uses it in the show was in the most recent ep, right? And doesn't he say something like "little bird, back to your cage" or w/e? So I guess the metaphor is still there.

Pitying metaphors do not justify turning it into a romantic ship though tbqh. I mean I'm not surprised, but oh fandom.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2012-05-08 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
SANSAN IS THE WORST

I ONLY WATCH THE SHOW AND I ALREADY KNOW THIS TO BE TRUE

where's that book quote where he talks about how he wishes he had "fucked her bloody" that's a good one

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2012-05-08 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
He made a queer sound, and it took her a moment to realize he was sobbing. “And the little bird, your pretty sister, I stood there in my white cloak and let them beat her. I took the bloody song, she never gave it. I meant to take her too. I should have. I should have fucked her bloody and ripped her heart out before leaving her for that dwarf.”

~~~~~*Sansan
[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)
...
Sounds like an awesome pairing to me!
[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2012-05-08 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
The funniest part? I googled "Sansan" and "fucked her bloody" and got that quote from the fuck yeah Sansan tumblr
whyyyyyyyy
whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
I mean, to be fair, he was probably saying that because he's trying to get... a certain person he is traveling with at the time (lol don't want to spoil you) to kill him.
BUT IT'S STILL A FUCKED UP THING TO SAY.
And in the scene he's referring to, there is DEFINITELY an undertone of sexual violence and an overtone of intimidation
jedi_of_urth: (Default)
[personal profile] jedi_of_urth 2012-05-08 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
That scene is so rapey but people keep trying to make it something romantic and I...arg.
[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
lol. Yeah.... when people defend that scene... I just.
NOPE. It is a scene that is all about intimidation and control and the power that Sandor has over her. UGH.
[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Sansa/Sandor is the actual and literal bane of my existence. lol. I have a ~reputation~ for being a hater and I get into ~discussions~ about it way more than any normal person should. Like SanSan is one of three pairings in the entire world that can make me see red.
Basically people like it because Sandor is ~misunderstood~. He's had a shitty life and he acts all gruff, but he is one of like 2 people in King's Landing (the other person being Tyrion) not actively trying to harm Sansa and he does some little things to help her out. Sandor claims he doesn't want to be a knight and has all these issues about knights and such because his batshit crazy older brother is a knight. But like he obviously still has these weird ideals about it and he sees Sansa as this fragile and pretty little thing to be protected and it feeds into his knight/lady weirdness.
And because of that people feel cool shipping Sansa (who is ~12 in the books) with a grown ass man (Sandor is ~29 in the books). IDEK.
SANSA IS OBVIOUSLY SUPER FUCKED UP. LIKE SHE IS NOT IN THE RIGHT HEADSPACE FOR ANYTHING. She obviously latches onto him and builds him up as a dark hero in her mind because she is alone and without friends and being abused and he is basically the ONLY one who is trying to help her. It's super messed up. And Sandor doesn't really know Sansa. He just loves this ideal he has of her.
ETA: Oh and I wouldn't have as much of an issue with it if SanSan shippers just were upfront about what a fucked up ship it is. I've shipped twisted things before. It's cool. BUT THEY ROMANTICIZE IT. And there is a lot of fanart and fic of them being a happy family and people talk about how he is going to be her ~protector~ and S;LKDFJD;SLKFJDS;LKJFSLKD I HATE EVERYTHING.
It's a really popular pairing in some sections of fandom... like most of lj and tumblr, for instance. But ONTD is pretty anti-SanSan. So there's that.
I have seen you on f!s! XD
Oh good grief, it's a woobie situation, isn't it? I should have known. It's often the only way Super Ultra Dicks ever become part of a ship.
Sounds like Sansa woobied him as well, yes?
[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
YES. That is exactly it. Sandor is really woobified by fandom. Yes, he had a terrible life. BUT HE IS STILL ALSO A VIOLENT DRUNK. And Sansa does it too, but she gets a pass from me because she's a kid who has spent the past two years (at the point the story is in the books) being emotionally abused.
[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, sort of reminds me when I was in middle school I thought Jareth in Labyrinth was THE MOST ROMANTIC MAN IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD. I look at the character now and it's like "LOL nut job." When I'm not saying "HOLY PACKAGE" of course. XD
jedi_of_urth: (wwjsd)
[personal profile] jedi_of_urth 2012-05-08 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Part of the problem is how much fandom has latched onto Sandor, which I don't really get. I don't see him as much of a woobie character, he actually is that much of a brute and an awful human being, having ~issues doesn't make up for that.
Then there's the fact that like you said he's one of the only people not actively trying to hurt Sansa, one of the only people in her chapters that comes off as a completely vile waste of human life (ymmv),but I just don't get how them makes them shippable. It's pretty much Stockholm Syndrome, the only reason she doesn't latch onto Tyrion that way is because he a Lannister and a dwarf.
And Sandor has more chemistry with Arya. not romance chemistry but WAY ore interesting interactions chemistry.
[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I CANNOT STAND THE WOOBIFICATION OF SANDOR. Lawd.
He is one of my least favorite characters just because I cannot deal with the way that fandom interacts with him.
[identity profile] papilio-luna.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
YOUR OPINION OF SANSAN IS THE CORRECT ONE OMG
I mean, it's kind of a book thing in that they have more interaction in the books but all that interaction is still creepy as fuck.
[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Just what people are describing in the book - DNW.
[identity profile] sunnytyler001.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
It's totally a book thing. HBO mostly ignored them. Or gave Sandor's lines to Littlefinger. XD
They've got quite a complicated relationship... To tell you the truth, GRRM is OBSESSED with Beauty & the Beast and Sansan is a proof of it XD
In the books Sandor tries to protect Sansa in his very own way: he tries to open her eyes to the cruelty of the world by telling her his own story (Petyr does that on the TV show), by telling her how corrupted the knights are, ... They've got quite a few scenes together in the books, very powerful scenes with Sandor telling her how wicked and cruel and pitiless the world is. i think it's a shame they didn't keep them. I mean all the main characters kept their companions: only Sansa's is being ignored.
I won't spoil you for the rest... even if HBO is most likely going to "forget" about it XD
[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
It's totally a book thing. HBO mostly ignored them. Or gave Sandor's lines to Littlefinger. XD
I don't even remember him interacting much with Sansa. :D
And I sort of wish they would have kept that in. So far Sansa just isn't all that interesting to me. If she had some sort of character development like becoming disillusioned with knights and fairy tales, that would be more interesting. Somehow I still doubt I'd ship them though. :D
[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2012-05-08 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean I would say Sansa is pretty obviously disillusioned with everything by this point and is focused on keeping up appearances. (Um, mostly. Bizarre moment where she says I HATE JOFFREY to the handmaid she didn't trust last time we saw her excluded.0
[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
lol. That was such a weird adaptation choice. Like I think the writers did it just to make sure that the audience knows that Sansa doesn't REALLY still love Joffrey... but.. come on! Book!Sansa would NEVER confide in her hand maiden.
[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2012-05-08 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
ESPECIALLY since.. okay if you want Sansa and Shae to be close in the show (IDK if they are in the books, w/e), that's fine. But the last time we saw them on screen Sansa was yelling at her and didn't trust her at all! So at least give a scene to show what changed to explain why she'd randomly be SO open with Shae and then get a lecture about not being so open.
[identity profile] papilio-luna.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Shae does not become Sansa's handmaiden in the books, so they never interact, like ever.
Though now in show!verse I am way shipping them, even with my knowledge of what happens with Shae later.
[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I could have sworn Shae starts to work for Sansa in ASOS. But I could just be misremembering? Like maybe she's not her handmaiden, but she's part of the household staff? Idk. It's been too long since I read the books.
[identity profile] papilio-luna.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
She's part of the household staff in some capacity (though for some reason I'm thinking she just sucked it up an went to work in the kitchen? idk) but I don't think she and Sansa speak like ever. Though maybe I'm misremembering. FUCKING LONG ASS BOOKS.
[identity profile] papilio-luna.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair, I think the writers are correct that some people still just DON'T GET IT w/r/t Sansa's true feelings, so good for them for nipping that ridiculous misconception in the bud. But yeah, definitely jarring for people who have a pair of eyes and have already gotten it.
[identity profile] sunnytyler001.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I remember reading A clash of kings and then, I only shipped them as futurequeenintheNorth and her future sworn shield.
I truly believe they will forget/ignore what made me think there might be more for them in the future. Anyway, Sandor is 28 in the books. Here, he's at least 40 XD So, yeah, I'd be happy if they were just friends/ Sandor working for her.
So far Sansa just isn't all that interesting to me. If she had some sort of character development like becoming disillusioned with knights and fairy tales, that would be more interesting.
YES YES YES!!! That's what happens in the books!!! And that's why Sansan is so interresting and SO IMPORTANT for her character. In the beginning, she believes in true knights and in knighthood and she believes everything is beautiful and everyone is as honourable as her father. And Sandor is the first to warn her and tells her how are the knights really. And how he hates them and refuses to be a knight because his brother is a knight and he's a monster. And afterwards, when Joffrey's knights beat her she's all: "The Hound hates the knights. He's right, I hate them too"
By "forgetting" this relationship of hers, they totally forgot about her own character development and that's a shame.
[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 06:07 pm (UTC)(link)
As it is she seems to be getting lost in the shuffle.
