Was I the only one who was thinking that Belle's father would turn out to be Hook? And Belle's mother was Rumple's ex-wife? I WAS GETTING READY TO EW SO HARD AT THAT. But then it turned out that Belle wasn't, thus avoiding the ick factor.
Overall, this seems a healthy direction for Rumple/Belle, if they are intended to be end-game. Plus Belle now gets to be a librarian! And gets to live on her own, which would be nice for her. All her life she's been kept and managed by people, and now she finally gets to take charge. And if she wants to have a relationship with Rumple, it can start over on an equal footing instead of Belle being his prisoner. Or kept house-guest - that line about her not owning anything when Rumple was looking for her spoke volumes.
As far as Hook goes, I was sort of underwhelmed by him. He's got gobs of guyliner and is a bit pretty, but he's a douche. Not even the larger-than-life nemesis of Peter Pan types - just a douche. I'm sure that won't stop people fangirling him, though. (See copious amounts of guyliner.) I couldn't even work up any emotion for Rumple's ex. If she had just left Rumple, than I probably would have liked her more, but she had no excuse for abandoning her son. So her romance with Hook? Whatever. (Is this the first woman that has been killed for manpain? There have been several guys so far to bite it for womanpain.)
Seeing that article where some PTB of OuaT was talking about Captain Jack Sparrow and Sherlock, I want Jack to turn up and make a lot of fun of Hook. :D (And I would totally take a crossover fic of BBC Sherlock and Once Upon a Time! But it would be just plain weird to see it on the show.)
To sum up: NEEDS MORE SNOW-EMMA MOTHER-DAUGHTER BONDING.

Most of the problematic issues people had (David being a dick, Belle and Rumple being a very unbalanced relationship no matter how much you can see what they were TRYING to do with them, Regina's lack of responsability for her actions) have either been commented on, handled or set up to be dealt with.
I'm quite looking forward to how they're going to handle the rest of the season, because it looks like they've put some good thought into the character journeys.
I'm concerned about all the new characters, though. Whilst it's fun to play 'spot the literary reference' it will leave far less time for them to spend on the characters we already have.

*nods* I'm most interested in the Charming family, but there are plenty of other stories they've got me interested in as well. Belle is turning out to be a great one to watch!

I hope they don't get suckered into that too much. They've already introduced several new characters, but substance needs to go with it.

The scenes with Rumpel the coward were hard on me because of secondhand embarrassment. That was really hard for me to watch. I was very amused by Rumpelstiltskin asking Charming for advice. This episode needed more Emma and Snow.

Though I can't argue that he's an asshole. He is certainly not a good or honorable person right from the start. Claiming that he and his crew are going to be enjoying Milah knowing that Rumpel can't do a thing about it? Offering to duel a shaking man who can barely stand without his crutch? Yeah, very honorable. I don't blame Rumpel at all for not fighting him. I thought it was rather brave of him to confront Hook in the first place.
We will be getting Snow&Emma bonding next week! I'm glad they are not trying to overstuff the episodes too much! Poor Belle had disappeared completely for two episodes.

And yay for more Snow & Emma!! I understand needing to spread everything out because there really are a lot of stories to tell. (Like August who has been MIA for the entire season so far.)

Were we supposed to feel bad for Rumple's wife? Because I agree... she up and left her son after one night in a bar with a guy who could take her on an adventure.
by the same token, Rumple killed his wife... which is pretty awful.
I'd feel a lot better about some of the villains' supposed attempts at reform if there was some sort of story justice - some sort of karma. I dunno, I don't think it's holding together as well this season as it did last season.
