I haven't watched Downton Abbey yet, but I've been spoiled. I also haven't watched Doctor Who, but I've been sort of spoiled for that as well.
So Matthew bites it on Downton Abbey? And Clara dies on Doctor Who? (Or maybe not. I wasn't totally clear from seeing spoilers.)
LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL. Nothing says "Christmas" in the UK like horrible death! XD
Somewhere on tumblr I saw a body count for 2012 for Brit shows. It was fairly lengthy and included several main characters, as well as well-loved secondary characters. So I've gotta ask: WHAT IS IT WITH BRITISH WRITERS AND DEATH? This is a semi-serious question, since no matter how fluffy the show is, you can pretty much count on at least someone dying if it's put out in the UK. Seriously, this waaaay above the norm.
Is it...a cultural mindset? (Are British-type people just obsessed with dying?) Lazy writing to take a shortcut to "drama" so that another character can experience feels? Written into actors' contracts in the hopes of picking up an award? What?
