DW - The Talons of Weng-Chiang (Four, Leela)

So this pseudo Weng-Chiang was actually from the 51st century and had been mucking around with time travel. But it didn't work - not really. His line of experimentation was a failure since the body would ultimately not stabilize after time displacement. Right?

In any case, it seemed like he didn't know one way or the other if his "pioneering" had worked or not, since he told the Doctor "you're here because of my research" and the Doctor told him "no, you failed." (And I'm *sure* was thinking that the TARDIS could kick this guy's time cabinet's wooden ass.)

BUT... This guy sounded like he was pretty much the first time traveler in his experiments. He sent himself back in time - and then it went a little sideways. Now, if that's the case, HOW could he have known about Time Agents? o_O

I'm gonna get told this is a hand-wave, aren't I? *narrows eyes*

Other than that, the episode did turn out to be pretty interesting with the time travel and the...pig toy. Plus the Doctor actually *asked for* and got a big-ass gun. And then used the big-ass gun. That's pretty unusual. Of course, he did also make a bomb and that seems pretty typical. ;)

Just couldn't get over the stereotype though. *shudders*

ETA: And now there are vague S3 spoilers in the comments. Which could get non-vague. :D (Somehow I think I might be one of the only people who goes in with the intent of *only* talking about some Classic episode, but winds up talking about New Who anyway. Well...I had help!)

Well, and they've set themselves up so handily for avoiding that, what with the emphasis on Earth's colonization of space. Heck, you can retcon many if not most of the humanoid aliens from the old days as stemming from the Earth diaspora. (I might be going there with Traken in the Nyssafic, depending on how a couple of plot points turn.)

Right right right.

I'm not surprised by, or even arguing with, Martha being from Earth.

Well, I was really hoping she'd be from elsewhere. And then it turned out she wasn't. And then I was hoping she'd be from another time. And it doesn't look like she is. And then...other S3 spoilers. Heh. Not overly thrilled at this point in time. I really need an attitude adjustment if I'm gonna watch S3, otherwise I'll just be one of those bitter fans who can do nothing but bitch.

But I do hope they at least get around to having a companion from a different time period. (A long-term one, that is. They can't cry "been there, done that" on the basis of Jack!)

That would be nice.

I'm still holding out hope that they'll at least stick to the contrasting personality principle.

Totally. I just cannot imagine she'd be a carbon copy of Rose. They'd be *really* dumb to go that way. But she's a med student, so probably smart and possibly a bit clinical.

Side note which has nothing to do with the character of Martha - one thing that *bugged* me in the S3 spoiler trailer is where they're in Shakespearean times and neither of them bothered to change out of their modern clothes! If we can't get other planets, can we at *least* get a costume change?? *FLAILS*

Oh, I know. The sidestep in "Tooth & Claw" amused me, as a costume geek, because just as I was going "Um, yeah, get the maid in there, sweetie, 'cause no WAY are you getting into any of that on your own," all hell broke loose and there was no opportunity to change.

And they were expecting 1979 in any event, which was why she didn't first change into a pseudo-period fancy-dress costume from the TARDIS wardrobe like she did in "The Unquiet Dead."

But both of those devices can only handle so much wear, y'know?

Right. They got away with it once, but I wouldn't go for it again. Especially since they *have* dressed up in the past - Unquiet Dead. Well...Rose dressed up. I'm thinking you might need to set fire to either Nine or Ten's clothing to get him to change. :D

I was wondering with the Shakespeare episode if you'll have some new project after it. :)

We shall see. That is one of the periods for which I've specifically bought fabric and left it waiting patiently in my stash for years on end...

*chuckle* I keep guilting about it, because I stole it from someone's couch. Er, sort of. The person who was bidding against me on eBay was looking to reupholster an antique couch with it, and emailed me after the auction to see what I was going to do with it. I told her it was for Elizabethan court garb, and she was more than satisfied with the answer (and later found something she liked better for her couch)! But ~7 years on, I still haven't done anything with it... *blush*

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-01-10 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, it'll end up being better than a couch eventually.

And also, yeah. Was really hoping for a costume change in T&C too. Oh well.

Or at least have Rose get past "Oooh, pretty!" and into "How the hell do I do this???" There still would have been plenty of time for all hell to break loose before she broke down and asked the maid for help. Like how she was with Gwyneth -- she knows she's expected to order the servants around, but it's a big jump to actually doing it.

I always like it best when there's an attempt to fit in, even if it's not a period costume per se. Whoever was dressing Sarah during Four's tenure was really good at that. There's the dress in "Pyramids of Mars," of course, with the dialogue about its having belonged to Victoria. But then there's having the smarts to realize a thoroughly 1970s granny dress wouldn't look that out of place in Renaissance Italy.

Well, at least she pulled them out and held them up, but yeah. Would have been funny having Rose stare at the fasteners et al. and been, "Uh..." :D
