DW: The Keys of Marinus (One, Susan, Ian, Barbara)

Couldn't resist a screen cap with this one...

  • These One episodes seem to be getting progressively better. This is the first episode that, even though it was 6 parts, it didn't feel like it went on too long. It had the same sort of premise as the Key to Time arc - there were keys that they had to collect, each resulting in its own adventure in very different settings.

  • The Doctor was still a secondary character and even disappeared for a couple of parts. Side note - William Hartnell was only 55 when he started Doctor Who?? He looks...80. And acts 80. I can see why they made the Doctor "younger" in later incarnations. The very nature of the show is action-based and if your supposedly main character can never participate in the action...

  • The Doctor went to sleep for the night. But then, One's already a well-known napper. I wonder when the sleeps-rarely-if-at-all thing popped up. And why. Maybe to give *some* differentiation between Time Lords and humans? Since they look exactly alike, there have to be other things like two hearts, rarely sleeps, psychic, etc. But anyway, back to the One sleeping thing. I'm getting the feeling that I'm really not going to be able to get a whole lot about the Doctor's character from One, just because he's written *so* differently at this point. Maybe later on.

  • Finally, a screen cap.

... wait. He was 55? Seriously? I agree with you: he looks and acts like an octogenarian. An old one.

That cap... is a picture of an actual "monster" from One's episodes? Eeek! What fun.

Well, IMDB said he was born in 1908 and the first episodes were done in 1963, so I did the math. Unless IMDB's wrong.

It is! These brain beings! HA!! I have an overwhelming urge to paint 1812 on the side of it and let it scoot around on the floor...

1812! I loved 1812! Although that thing's not as cute, sadly.

No, definitely not as cute. :D

Ahhh the Keys of Marinus. They do get better. You gotta love the low budget of original Who. I really hope you watch the Dalek Invasion of Earth. Sniff 1812. I loved him.

Oh, you do gotta love it! Hee! And I'll definitely be watching that one!

Hee! The snail looks like paper mache! And googly eyes from the craftstore! That must be one of the best jobs, to just create and design the monsters and villians of Doctor Who. I'd think it would be so much fun.

Yes! You gotta love the googly eyes! HEEE!! And I bet they did have fun doing that. :D

I have seen so little of the First and Second Doctors. It's so sad that so many eppies are missing. I did try and watch the reconstruction of Marco Polo and dang, that about drove me batty. I kept checking email and reading LJ between scene changes. However, I noted that when One got some downtime, he became a nicer person. So, just like humans, Time Lords function better if they get some sleep. :)

As for Hartnell's Doctor, the show when first created was going to be more of a history lesson for the kiddies, hence the teachers, and a young companion that kids could somewhat relate to in the way of Susan. The Doctor and his TARDIS might have been just the way of getting them about. But the reaction of the UK to The Daleks changed the concept of the show forever. They really did have Dalekmania, just like Beatlemania!

So as first conceived, the Doctor didn't need to be an action hero, so Ian and the other male companions through Jamie performed that function. The Third Doctor was the action hero Doctor! :)

The Gunfighters was the next-to-last purely historical show, until Black Orchid in 1982. The Highlanders is the one om-between. Bu purely historical, I mean that there are no SF elements, other than the TARDIS itself landing and taking off.

I ended up recording it to DVD and watching it on TV, but by the end I was doing my nails and more listening to it than anything else. I probably could have throw it in my car.

Hmm. Wonder if the Doctor slept much after One.

I can see why! I *still* am on the lookout for a plushie dalek. :D

That makes sense. So Two really didn't get into the mix either? I've only seen him in The Five Doctors and The Three Doctors yet.

Alas, audio books mostly put me to sleep. :(

At least Two ate sandwiches. Jo brought Three cups of tea, but I think she made tea all the time for the UNIT guys. And Ten ate Christmas dinner with the family. One must wonder abut Time Lords' habits. ;)

From what little I have seen of Two, his favourite tactic was to run away. Or at least to tell his companions to run away. I think Ben and Jamie did the action stuff in that era.

There was tons of Dalek stuff back in the day, or so I have read. I suspect there must have been a Dalek plushie.

I've only listened to one Big Finish audio, and really liked that. I tried listening to the audio of the New Adventures and couldn't. 1) was put off when I found out they were abridged, and 2) poor DT is not a voice actor and I didn't really care for his reading, especially when he tried to go in and out of different accents and change voices - didn't always work.

I've heard that before. *pats the Doctor*
