Whoage

Still an hour until BSG (when I started typing), so...

The War Games (Two, Jamie, Zoe)
  • Yup. The Time Lords have their heads up their asses. I'm *really* wondering if they ever could do a "surprise! time lords still exist!" in New Who. It just doesn't seem like it'd be this totally wonderful thing to the Doctor. Sure, no longer the last of his kind, but...they're assholes!

  • Along those lines, every once in a while, I see an episode where I realize more and more that the Face of Boe thing in "New Earth" about the Doctor being, "the man without a home - the lonely god" really applied pre-Time War as well. Before watching this classic stuff, I thought that had more to do with the destruction of the Time Lords. But he really was without a home long before that - Gallifrey was where he was from, but not his home.

  • Not exactly sure *why* Jamie and Zoe had to go back with their memories erased. It's really not fair.

  • Ten parts. Oy. Well, for the most part it didn't seem to drag. But it could have been cut way way way down. There just wasn't that huge of a plot if you really look at it.

  • I spent much of the time trying to figure out if the War Chief was supposed to be the Master, or if he was just another random evil Time Lord. I don't *think* they're the same person. Time Lords should start wearing numbers.

  • Was a bit amusing to see the Doctor all, "Oh HELL. It's my planet."

  • This was the first time *I've* seen the Doctor talk about the circumstances of leaving Gallifrey. He talked about being a fugitive for disagreeing with their non-interference ways, and also that he stole the TARDIS. I could *totally* see him way back when, being all idealistic and argumentative, and wide-eyed granddaughter Susan listening to his every word. And then one day, when they're at a museum, he tells her to hop over the rope - he'll take her for a spin in an antique and *really* show her the universe instead of just observing. The rest is history.

Carnival of Monsters (Three, Jo)
  • Ah, the time-loop storyline. Made me instantly think of "The Chimes of Midnight," which was another fun one.

  • Heh. Teeny TARDIS being picked up by a big hand. "Look! I've got a TARDIS, and a Three, and a Jo!"

  • *sigh* Yeah, I know there's a limited actor pool, but it always weirds me out when they use the same actors for different roles. "HARRY! Oh, wait. It's not Harry. Huh."

  • So now if the Doctor and Jo had landed in the time loop, wouldn't they loop as well? Also, they made the comment about the machine having been banned in the galaxy, thanks to the Doctor. But said if this machine existed, they must have missed one in the recall. Well...how about if they landed in a time *before* the Doctor had the machine banned? TIME MACHINE.

  • Was a bit disappointed that they showed the Cybermen on the screen in the carnival of monsters, but they never ran across them. Just the big worms.

  • After the last Jo episode I saw, The Claws of Axos, I'm glad Jo actually did things and was part of the plot, as opposed to standing around and screaming.

The Green Death (Three, Jo)
  • Hadn't been paying attention, so I didn't realize this was Jo's final episode. Got a couple of final episodes in today.

  • There was this whole plot about maggots, a megalomaniac computer and a mine shaft, but it all seemed pretty secondary in my mind to what was going on in the B plot - the setting up of Jo leaving. It was actually pretty well crafted, and I was surprised. It's probably one of the better departures I've seen in Classic Who. Sometimes there's a "see ya!" and sometimes we actually get a hug, but this took the time to lay a bit of groundwork.

You start off with the Doctor being all "Let's go to a blue planet! YAY!" (this is where I smacked my head at having a blue planet in my DW fic) but Jo is more concerned with what's going on around her. He tries to tempt her by telling her, "no really, blue planet!", but it doesn't work. So they part ways - Jo taking off for the mine and the Doctor going out to see the wonders of the universe and get himself some blue rocks. Of course, once at the blue planet, he's chased by giant lizards and giant birds. But I can *totally* picture him being all "YEEE HAA!" the whole time in his mind. The adrenaline freak. Heh heh.

The Doctor eventually goes back to UNIT where he follows the Brigadier and Jo to the mine. The A plot happens - yadda yadda - and the Doctor comes to find that Jo's become quite taken with this young professor. She even tells the Doctor that this professor reminds her of a young Doctor. (Oh, where have I heard that before? *cough*Rose with Jack*cough* I'm starting to think more and more that RTD et al are fans of the Three era.)

Poor Doctor - you can *see* that he realizes he's losing Jo. She's interested in the professor's travels up the Amazon, when she'd earlier in the episode rejected the Doctor's travels. He tries to show her this amazing blue rock he'd picked up, and she just "hmms" at him. And as a last-ditch effort to keep her around, he steers the professor away to do some scientific things.

Maggots die from eating mushrooms, and back to the B plot. Jo tells the Doctor that she's not coming back with him. Instead, she's traveling with the professor and they're getting married. The Doctor wishes her the best and gives her the blue stone, but you can see his disappointment. And then he drives off alone while the rest of the house is celebrating the engagement. Yeah, already back here he's that lonely god - always this outsider, never able to keep anyone in his life for a long period of time. Even *with* Companions around he has to be Mr. Fantastic, flashing the wonders of the universe to get them to stick around in the middle of the danger that surrounds him. And sometimes the wonders of the universe don't always cut it.

Poor, poor Doctor. He really finally had someone with Rose, didn't he?

Oh look! It's about time for BSG to start!

The only one of these I've seen yet is Carnival of Monsters.

Like most Who from that era it could have been cut down to about an hour or so.

Loved the little Tardis and the big hand :)

I am doing Who from the beginning, in order. Now that's gonna be difficult and time consuming.

Yeah. I'm *really* glad they have it in its current format nowadays instead of trying to pad it out to an hour and a half with multiple "cliffhangers."

Oh, very. I've found I need to break up some of the older stuff with some of the later era stuff. Some of it's just really hard to get through. Like The Highlanders. I've only watched one part and haven't been able to go back yet.

I'm looking at it like some sort of Quest.

From beginning to end - in order.

Mad I tell you - MAD!!!!!
