More Utopia blather.
I think I'm going to have to get off the computer again. This time it's my hand/wrist. Apparently yesterday did a number on me. :D However, things I'm pondering at the moment, which will probably eventually turn into large metas. Unless someone does it first so I don't have to.
Okay, and now my eyes are getting blurry again. I overloaded on the computer yesterday apparently. Bah. Haven't even really hit my flist.
- The Chanto/Professor/Martha = Martha/Doctor/Jack comparison. (
butterfly clued me in about this first.) Broken, unasked-about watch = unasked-about Rose. Martha really has been a bit Chanto this series - adoring but not really getting to know the Doctor in certain aspects. Never asking about the elephant in the room. (Getting bitchy and offended, but never asking.) - Rose really screwed up with Jack. And the Doctor hid this from her.
- Jack going to watch Rose growing up. He really loved both of them, didn't he?
- The Doctor using the word "trapped" about Rose instead of using that "happy life" thing.
- How S3 has done nothing but increase my understanding of how deeply the Doctor loves Rose. And that companions might change, but this is something different. (Heh. Not sure if this person wants to be identified, but as *someone* pointed out, this cry for fandom to move on from Rose is...funny. "Move on, because Doctor Who is about change! And we're basing this on 40 years of tradition! So...change! Because it's always been done that way!" Oh, irony.)

Chantho was adorable. I was really sad when she died. And oooh, yes, nice parallel there.
Maybe the Doctor never mentioned it to Rose because if he did, then he'd have to do something about it? Kind of like for the Family of Blood, actually, maybe he was just being nice to Jack? *ponders*

Mister Saxon = Master No. Six
Don't ya love anagrams?

Heh. I feel so wrapped up in my own thoughts that I haven't really bothered to read my flist either. Ha!
The Doctor using the word "trapped" about Rose instead of using that "happy life" thing.
I think I died. Finally. Finally he's admitting that it wasn't her choice, that he didn't give her some great gift. Oh, Doctor. *wibble*
I'm afraid that the season finale will break my soul. *sniff*

Yeah. And I'm at the point where constantly seeing people trying to "convert" others to the right way of thinking, is starting to seem pretty neurotic, quite frankly.

Yeah, it was an interesting parallel.

I don't have a fully-formed idea about this yet. Few elements I'm batting around:
1) He was just SO adverse to what had happened, he didn't even like thinking about it.
2) His very strong drive to protect Rose. He carries plenty of guilt in his life, and I could see him wanting to keep that kind of thing off her if he could.
3) Knowing Rose, she might have very well wanted to actually *stay* with Jack. Like the Doctor, Jack's been alone. But unlike the Doctor, Rose is responsible for making Jack that way. Not that I think Rose loved Jack like the Doctor, but still - guilt. Nine did nothing but pull Rose away from people, and this might have been Nine's last act as well.

I'm still trying to get there, but for my ouchy hand. *types anyway*

Look what they have reduced us to! The thing we're most happy about is having the Doctor finally verbalize that getting sucked into the AU was not a good thing for Rose.

Oh, it will. And then in the last 5 seconds of the episode, a pygmy hippo will appear in the TARDIS and belch, paving the way for the oh so wacky Christmas episode, while we have a good cry for a few months.

And not only did he hide it from her, but his feelings for her grew even stronger in the year that followed. He could have been furious or disappointed or resentful because she screwed up (and not just screwed up, but screwed up horribly), yet instead he fell even further in love with her. And that's ... wow.

LOL!! Oh that's just priceless ... and I would be good money you're right! (Well, ok, maybe not an hippo ... an elephant maybe?)

Shows how much he really didn't hold it against her. I just mentioned this in someone else's journal, but I'm kinda seeing a bit of similarity between giving Rose a pass and giving himself a pass sometimes about things. He very often runs away from any type of consequences to his actions. Oh, he'll lay the smack down on other people, but himself? And seems he wrapped Rose up a bit in his "above the law" mindset.
Okay, this *really* isn't a fully-formed idea yet. Sounds a bit cynical right now. But I agree with you - he still thought she was all that and a bag of chips in spite of messing up.
Oh! This wasn't the first time Rose massively messed up either. Father's Day. But he never held that against her either after they'd made up.
Yup, still rambling in order to try and sort this out in my mind.

Probably! The audience will be sobbing and in comes the hippo/elephant/squirrel...

True. And you could argue further that the second time was even worse, because she brought someone else down with her -- she changed Jack forever. Though in her defense, she didn't know what she was doing in PotW. In FD, she knew she was doing something she wasn't supposed to -- she just didn't realize what would happen as a result.

Would that be a regular squirrel? Or a cracked-out Saxon squirrel bent on being master of the universe? *vbg*

And that probably made all the difference to the Doctor. It wasn't another Father's Day where she did something for her own personal reasons. PotW was her being "so human" and bringing life as the final act of something that had caused so much death.

Oh, the cracked-out Saxon squirrel, of course! Cackling in that high-pitched squirrel voice and twirling his whiskers...

Nor would it have been the last, had she still been around; she's human. Humans are expected to mess up. It's what makes us ... human.
And we all know how the Doctor loves Humanity. Rose was Humanity, at it's finest: all it's flaws, all it's faults, all it's passion, it's curiosity, it's drive.

I know what you mean. I usually just ignore that stuff because if I don't, it infuriates me and it's really not worth it.
And I think your 1) and my idea have similar points, actually. The way I see it, if he didn't mention it, then he could pretend it didn't happen, wouldn't think about it, and wouldn't need to take measures. I like your 2) and 3) too, maybe it's a bit of everything? ;)
Also, didn't you think the Doctor was quite scary when he lashed at out Martha, shouting 'What did he say?' so suddenly after she told him of the watch? I was quite surprised by the violence of his reaction, but it seems to go with the whole 'darker' aspect his character has taken this season.

Yeah, he's really got this edge to him now. And it doesn't surprise me so much - I think he was starting to get an idea of who it could be, and it was very VERY bad. Time-to-get-shouty bad.
