Okay, this has been pointed out by several people on my flist and...

Doctor Who's idea of period clothing for the upcoming Christmas episode (promo pic).

*Actual* examples of clothing for that time period. (American examples, but British ones can't be *that* different.)

*waits for [livejournal.com profile] wiliqueen's eye to start twitching*

ETA: I do believe the clothing issue has now been solved in the comments. *shakes everyone's hands*

Just her eye?? LOL!

They got it right with Martha in 1913. I hope this doesn't start the whole blondes thing off again.

:D

Guess they couldn't put their very special guest star into something dowdy?

*grouses and smacks hand against forehead*

Oh great. >.<; Blatant female objectification. JUST what we need.

My eye started twitching when the lifeboat crashed through the side of the TARDIS. *g* I'm starting to really hate the cliffhangers setting up the Christmas specials. Although at least this time I wasn't growling profanity at them for destroying the emotional integrity of the ending, since the entirety of my emotion at the ending of LotTL may be summed up with "WTF???"

At least, I assume it was a lifeboat -- [livejournal.com profile] brainiacfive's immediate response was "Isn't that awfully small?"

Seeing this, I'm now wondering if the real Titanic will in fact be involved at all. Maybe it's a piece of a stage set. The Beeb's period sense may be eminently nitpickable, but I can't imagine them doing anything like this without a solid reason.

They *did* get it right with Martha in 1913. And forget the blonde thing, I'm raising an eyebrow myself.

Someone suggested that perhaps her character isn't actually *from* that time period (another time traveler) and didn't get things quite right. Which probably would be the only way I wouldn't be rolling my eyes at the outfit.

Fun, ain't it?

Okay, maybe not a stage set. O_o But with a title like "Voyage of the Damned," I'm still thinking they're not expecting us to think anyone was dressed like that in 1912.

The story claims the Titanic itself did crash into the TARDIS which, um, no. Unless the control room gained about twelve stories in height in the process of removing the paradox machine.

:: ponders a moment :: Sticking to the fake-Titanic theory, I think. Not a stage set piece, but maybe a cheesy interstellar theme park attraction?

*falls over* I...was pretty much close to where you were. A lot is a blur after Tinkerbell.

OOOOH! You have a fantastic point! This could be like a movie set!! Because you're right - they've not screwed up costuming yet like this. I mean, we're just gonna have to handwave the part about anything actually penetrating the TARDIS anyway, why not make it a movie set?

Oh DAMN! I was all ready to jump on board your theory!!

Yes, maybe cheesy interstellar theme park attraction. Like...one of those murder mysteries on a massive scale. *nods self into a state of denial*

I actually don't think any denial is really needed. The phrase about the Titanic crashing into the TARDIS threw me, and had me thinking "Okay, Voyage of the Damned...the ship somehow got pulled out of time and picked up extra people and..."

Then I realized that a fake Titanic to which hinky things have happened is actually a simpler explanation. They wouldn't have to deal with the continuity of observation of what happened to the real one when it sank, for one thing. (Not to mention the fact that Nine was already supposed to have been there!)

A theme park/interactive mystery/movie set/whatever, being completely invented, can be cast adrift in time and space without all that messiness. The more I think about it, the more sense it makes.

If I didn't know better, I'd say it looked like she'd had her skirt removed and was running around in her undergarments, but what do I know?

[identity profile] beck-liz.livejournal.com 2007-07-11 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Also, those boots look more like something you'd wear to a club. I like them, but still. You can see her knees! *gasp, horror*

You're so funny. ;-P

And actually, there could be a dimensional handwave for the proportion issue. But with this wardrobe thing on top of it, it's looking more and more to me like something entirely else.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-07-11 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Kinda looks like the actual costume to me. But...maybe she's been Shatner-ized?

The news report also says she's a waitress. It's dead-on for "cheesy theme restaurant."

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-07-11 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I'm going with the movie-set Titanic mentioned above. It will help me sleep at night.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-07-11 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
That would be rather amusing to have the Doctor get into a wreck, but not with the actual Titanic. Crashing into the actual Titanic would be at least semi-cool, however he munched it on a theme restaurant. :D

[identity profile] chiroho.livejournal.com 2007-07-11 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Perhaps the role was cast as "French Maid" instead of "Chambermaid"??

[identity profile] principia-coh.livejournal.com 2007-07-11 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I meant if they were trying to get away from water and her skirts were weighing her down or something; however, I think people's conjecture that this may not be the actual Titanic is probably correct.

Which makes me sigh, because that means the ep is unlikely to center around a Nine/Ten dynamic that might involve Rose.

[identity profile] wiliqueen.livejournal.com 2007-07-11 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Heee! You're not wrong. It also puts it about on par with the tone of the last couple Christmas specials. Anything they could possibly do with the real Titanic would be way too emotionally heavy-duty.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-07-11 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
It would be FAB if it'd have involved Nine too. And Rose is always good. But I just couldn't imagine CE would have signed on for an ep. If he had, they'd have been promoting the hell out of it instead of trying to keep it a secret.
