Okay, there are 25 posts on my flist about this this morning, and so I should really post as well, right? Lemmingness and all?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/news/cult/news/drwho/2007/09/03/48471.shtml

So, the way I understand it is this:

2008 - S4 w/DT
2009 - Hiatus; 3 DW "specials" w/DT
2010 - S5 w/???

You'd *almost* think that DT would be returning for S5 with this setup, since if he'd wanted to move on, they could have very easily done S5 straight away in 2009. But I guess he's going to be working on Hamlet for the RSC and so on during the period they should have been filming for S5.

You know, thinking about it, I'm not surprised. DT is like the *ultimate* Doctor Who fangeek, and to give up playing the Doctor after just 3 years? Have you seen him in the S2 diaries? It's "OMGOMGOMGOMG!! A DALEK!! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!" He and JB probably sat in his trailer trading their Who cards. :D

But if he does plan on doing Who for a longer period of time, it's probably good they have this break so both he - and really everyone else - doesn't get burned out on it.

Of course, what the HELL am I going to do during 2009?? ;)

And now...I need to have some coffee and wake up. I'm determined to do my outstanding drabbles today, and maybe write a bit of fic. Maybe. Coffee first.

Ah! The world has returned to normal.. a DW post!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-09-03 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
See? It wasn't going to be long!

[identity profile] dettiot.livejournal.com 2007-09-03 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I really think it's as you said: they're setting up this schedule to prevent burn-out. And not just DT's, but RTD's as well. They've said that the 2009 specials are going to be written by RTD, but there's no word on who's connected with series 5. By giving them a break from a full series, they can work on other projects, take some time off, and hopefully make them want to come back. It'd be way worse if 2009 had nothing; I'm thrilled to get three specials, and I'm super-curious about how things are going to play out. And super-hopeful. [crosses fingers]

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-09-03 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the could have just said they were going to be on hiatus until 2010. Other shows have taken a year off. So this is nice there will be three specials. Hope they spread them evenly throughout the year, so there will be something to look forward to.

[identity profile] kalleah.livejournal.com 2007-09-03 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)

Yep. It's funny in hindsight to hear them fanboying over what I assumed at the time was Yana being the Master -- but was probably actually the bit about Jack as the Face of Boe. You can imagine John running to David's trailer, all OMG! OMG! and David just as giddy.

Dorks. I do love 'em.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-09-03 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I know! I heard that one too - where something like DT ran over to JB with "OMGOMGOMG! HAVE YOU READ THE SCRIPT??" I kinda think it was about the Face of Boe thing. They're such cute dorks. :D

(Man, I still would love to see Jack come back to Who.)

Of course, what the HELL am I going to do during 2009?

Party like it's 2010?

I'm just confused by all this- here I was sorta ready to get disinterested with Who after 2009, depending how series 4 went, but RTD seems determined to make me keep being beaten up. Yes, I'm happy that's David's staying on, but part of me is going "if the specials are interconnected and we have to wait 4 months between plot points, someone's going to get shot at. But at the same time, we still get David goodness, and this is a chance for some more interesting locals/possible companions. I hope.

There definitely is a lot of room to play with in doing specials instead of a series. They could be one-shots, which kinda frees them from having to deal with any big character arc. Or they could be connected, which, like you said, would probably drive me crackers. :D

[identity profile] theiceisthin.livejournal.com 2007-09-03 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I anticipate you being driven crackers. It's like SUPER FUN for the rest of us!

*makes a note to order popcorn for 2009*

Careful, there.. that's a vulnerable piece of Michelle that is!

*headtilts* I think your ass looks better in those shorts.

You better believe it, baby!

When it was put into the context of the post on OSK it really made me think that they were setting up for the end of DT's run as the Doctor but now that I've sat and thought about it a bit more your post makes just as much sense, burnout, theatre and all. And, really, I would looooove love love to have him stay. Forever. :D

It just makes me wonder that if this is indeed the case, what will happen to Rose?

Eh, they could be delaying his departure, but I'm kinda thinking *why* would they do that? If the plan was for Eleven to take over with S5, why not just start that up right away in 2009? But I've given up trying to figure out these people long ago...

It just makes me wonder that if this is indeed the case, what will happen to Rose?

Who knows? Although, I don't think I'd be looking for a Rose return at the end of S4 with this, unfortunately.

And that's why I'm devastated, because my theory just got shot to shit. It's not like I want DT to go, but I think a reunion would have been incredibly likely if he was leaving after S4 or the Christmas special. I doubt those three specials in 2009 are going to have Rose.

But then, you've said that the show consistently outships your expectations, so I suppose there's some small hope.

At least we should know as S4 progresses whether they might be leading up to something with Rose (the way S3 seemed to be).

You know the other thing that gets my goat? Doubtless the Marthafen are gloating right now about the implications for our ship *sigh*

I think I'm at a point where I'm thinking we'll see BP turn up in DT's last ep - since she's said she wants to do it - but not before and probably not after. :( (But if something else happens, I will be HAPPY.)

But...never say never. I *do* say that this show constantly out-ships me and it's TRUE. I *always* underestimate the canon ship.

At least we should know as S4 progresses whether they might be leading up to something with Rose (the way S3 seemed to be).

Well...there's the thing. There were times when S3 seemed to be pointing at something, but it turned out to be nothing. I think I'm going to be more likely to think chain-yanking than anything else in the future.

Well, I'll try to think that, but fall into their speculation trap. AGAIN. And make myself nuts. AGAIN. *shakes fist*

You know the other thing that gets my goat? Doubtless the Marthafen are gloating right now about the implications for our ship *sigh*

I'm not really sure how you could say anything either way based on this, without it being 100% guessing.

This information is following me everywhere. Heh.

It's stalking you.

Of course, what the HELL am I going to do during 2009?? ;)

Heh! I kind of had the same thought process:

Hour 1: OMG, YAY, DAVID, WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
Hour 2: WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR DOCTOR/ROSE? *PANIC*
Hour 3: WHAT WILL I DO IN 2009? AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
Hour 4: Emergency trip to supermarket for ice cream and booze.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-09-03 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
BWAHAHAHAHA! I guess in 2009 there'll have to be a lot of fic to tide us over. :D

[identity profile] makesometime.livejournal.com 2007-09-03 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I was hoping there'd be at least someone on my flist to be grumpy with me about this :(

Even David Tennant isn't this important, but the fact that he's the most loved person in the world annoys me to all sorts of extremes. And I like the guy!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-09-03 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh. While I wasn't so terribly woe about the thought of DT leaving (think I'm more tied to the Doctor than tied to one particular incarnation), I'm not minding at all that he's staying. And actually, not minding for the show's sake as well. It'd be coming up on its fifth year and shows can start to get a bit stale around then. So if it means they all can refresh - the actor and the writers - coming back with renewed energy, creativity and joy for making the show, then I'd be all for it.

Or rather, just kinda gets back to that whole "my Doctor" thing, where Ten is part of it, but not all of it...

They are just so wee and precious, aww.

Clearly, 2009 is the year that you start writing that DW musical fic that you've always wanted to do. ;)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-09-03 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
OOOH YEAH. Everything's better in musical form.

[identity profile] angst-angel.livejournal.com 2007-09-03 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
It should totally be one of the 2009 specials!

[identity profile] t-a-n-g-o.livejournal.com 2007-09-03 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Can't say I'm suprised they're taking a year off. They film from about August-March so it must be pretty demanding. I don't know how DT has time to do other projects. maybe if they'd had a break between S2 and 3, Billie would have stayed on? Plus Uncle Rusty and the crew have longer to think so should write better eps...

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-09-03 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Could have been that she would have stayed on, but taking a break between S2 and S3 wouldn't have been the best, I'm thinking. The show barely starts and they put it on hiatus? Between 4 and 5 is a bit more practical in my book.

[identity profile] debs7.livejournal.com 2007-09-03 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
and how totally awesome would it be if one of the 3 specials was a multi doctor thing that had Ten cross time lines with Nine and Rose ^_^

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-09-04 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
That would be awesome WHENEVER. OMG.

I like the way you think! :D But yeah it's great to hear that the BBC is working to accommodate his schedule with the RSC. I wouldn't be surprised either way if DT were to come back for Series 5.

Never considered the idea of burnout but it is practical. We still get to see DT as the Doctor, albeit in only 3 specials, and he gets to work on other projects in addition to Who if he decides to continue on.

He and JB probably sat in his trailer trading their Who cards. :D

I could so see that happening!!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-09-04 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
You hear about actors wanting to stretch their legs all the time. And it wouldn't surprise me if RTD wanted to pen an unrelated miniseries. It's hard to do the same thing for very long without being able to revitalize somehow.
