Okay, there are 25 posts on my flist about this this morning, and so I should really post as well, right? Lemmingness and all?
http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/news/cult/news/drwho/2007/09/03/48471.shtml
So, the way I understand it is this:
2008 - S4 w/DT
2009 - Hiatus; 3 DW "specials" w/DT
2010 - S5 w/???
You'd *almost* think that DT would be returning for S5 with this setup, since if he'd wanted to move on, they could have very easily done S5 straight away in 2009. But I guess he's going to be working on Hamlet for the RSC and so on during the period they should have been filming for S5.
You know, thinking about it, I'm not surprised. DT is like the *ultimate* Doctor Who fangeek, and to give up playing the Doctor after just 3 years? Have you seen him in the S2 diaries? It's "OMGOMGOMGOMG!! A DALEK!! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!" He and JB probably sat in his trailer trading their Who cards. :D
But if he does plan on doing Who for a longer period of time, it's probably good they have this break so both he - and really everyone else - doesn't get burned out on it.
Of course, what the HELL am I going to do during 2009?? ;)
And now...I need to have some coffee and wake up. I'm determined to do my outstanding drabbles today, and maybe write a bit of fic. Maybe. Coffee first.

Yep. It's funny in hindsight to hear them fanboying over what I assumed at the time was Yana being the Master -- but was probably actually the bit about Jack as the Face of Boe. You can imagine John running to David's trailer, all OMG! OMG! and David just as giddy.
Dorks. I do love 'em.

(Man, I still would love to see Jack come back to Who.)

Party like it's 2010?
I'm just confused by all this- here I was sorta ready to get disinterested with Who after 2009, depending how series 4 went, but RTD seems determined to make me keep being beaten up. Yes, I'm happy that's David's staying on, but part of me is going "if the specials are interconnected and we have to wait 4 months between plot points, someone's going to get shot at. But at the same time, we still get David goodness, and this is a chance for some more interesting locals/possible companions. I hope.

There definitely is a lot of room to play with in doing specials instead of a series. They could be one-shots, which kinda frees them from having to deal with any big character arc. Or they could be connected, which, like you said, would probably drive me crackers. :D

*makes a note to order popcorn for 2009*

It just makes me wonder that if this is indeed the case, what will happen to Rose?

Eh, they could be delaying his departure, but I'm kinda thinking *why* would they do that? If the plan was for Eleven to take over with S5, why not just start that up right away in 2009? But I've given up trying to figure out these people long ago...

Who knows? Although, I don't think I'd be looking for a Rose return at the end of S4 with this, unfortunately.

And that's why I'm devastated, because my theory just got shot to shit. It's not like I want DT to go, but I think a reunion would have been incredibly likely if he was leaving after S4 or the Christmas special. I doubt those three specials in 2009 are going to have Rose.
But then, you've said that the show consistently outships your expectations, so I suppose there's some small hope.
At least we should know as S4 progresses whether they might be leading up to something with Rose (the way S3 seemed to be).
You know the other thing that gets my goat? Doubtless the Marthafen are gloating right now about the implications for our ship *sigh*

I think I'm at a point where I'm thinking we'll see BP turn up in DT's last ep - since she's said she wants to do it - but not before and probably not after. :( (But if something else happens, I will be HAPPY.)
But...never say never. I *do* say that this show constantly out-ships me and it's TRUE. I *always* underestimate the canon ship.

Well...there's the thing. There were times when S3 seemed to be pointing at something, but it turned out to be nothing. I think I'm going to be more likely to think chain-yanking than anything else in the future.
Well, I'll try to think that, but fall into their speculation trap. AGAIN. And make myself nuts. AGAIN. *shakes fist*

I'm not really sure how you could say anything either way based on this, without it being 100% guessing.

Heh! I kind of had the same thought process:
Hour 1: OMG, YAY, DAVID, WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
Hour 2: WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR DOCTOR/ROSE? *PANIC*
Hour 3: WHAT WILL I DO IN 2009? AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
Hour 4: Emergency trip to supermarket for ice cream and booze.

Even David Tennant isn't this important, but the fact that he's the most loved person in the world annoys me to all sorts of extremes. And I like the guy!

Or rather, just kinda gets back to that whole "my Doctor" thing, where Ten is part of it, but not all of it...

They are just so wee and precious, aww.
Clearly, 2009 is the year that you start writing that DW musical fic that you've always wanted to do. ;)

Never considered the idea of burnout but it is practical. We still get to see DT as the Doctor, albeit in only 3 specials, and he gets to work on other projects in addition to Who if he decides to continue on.
I could so see that happening!!
