Is there a statute of limitations on writing a sequel? 5 years? 10 years? Because I'm coming up on a year since I wrote my long Inertia fic and the sequel just doesn't seem to be happening. I've got about 7000 words down so far, but it's just fluff. When I try to mentally work out the plot, I keep getting myself into a corner. Which means either I'm not smart enough to get out of the corner and/or I need to just chuck the concept for the plot which means I'm once again plotless.

Man, writing with an honest-to-God plot is HARD. Give me short fluffy humor any day.

Of course, I started a Nine/Rose short fluff fic about a month ago that I've just not gotten back to. Truth be told, I've actually got 12 separate DW things on my writing journal right now - all in various states of completion.

Hmmm. I probably should be better about that. This is why I refuse to write WIPs - none of them would ever get finished. But writing really is this fun hobby with me. I have little drive to write except for when I'm having fun with it. (Although when I'm not writing I do have the occasional feeling that I *should* be writing. It's not exactly rational.)

The problem is that I think with my Inertia sequel it's gotten to the point of being more work than fun, all because of this damn plot.

Meh.

Eh, I'm probably just being melodramatic, but right now I want a magical plot machine that would spit out a story, where I could rewrite the dialog and pad in fluff scenes. Hoorah! Good thing I don't write for a living. I'd starve.

MEH.

I'm picspamming myself to cheer myself up.

MWAH!! I love this scene so much. I love that Rose is all, "Hahaha! SUCKER!" as she runs out of there. And just watching the Doctor's hands as Jackie slobbers him. And mostly because you can practically hear the Doctor's mind of, "AHHHHHHHH! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! OMFGAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!! WORSE THAN BEING MIND SUCKED! ALL 28 TIMES COMBINED!!"

Hee!!! Exactly . . . because none of those 28 times did he get mindsucked via the mouth. [giggle]

I know at least 1 WIP that's taken ... four years? I think? It's still not done yet. There are several others that are done and did take years. And although I can't come up with any examples off the top of my head, I'm quite sure that there are pro authors with years between original and sequel. *pets* (BTW, I will reply to your email, but it needs a little time to cook in my head before I respond. :-))

I loooove that scene. *snicker* Oh, Doctor. *pinches his cheeks* Wiping his mouth off like a five-year-old boy. Heeheehee.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-09-18 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Mwah! The funny thing is I can *really* picture every incarnation having exactly the same reaction to Jackie there, which just amuses the hell out of me.

"It all sucks! SUCKS!" There. Answered it for you /melodrama

Totally like a 5-year-old! Like being kissed by an aunt or grandma! MWAH!

I'm having a hard time deciding which one would object the most vociferously, and which would just go with the flow. Eight probably would mind the least; Five would faint dead away. I'm thinking Nine might have just returned her slap and had done with it.

Eight probably would mind the least;

Definitely.

Five would faint dead away.

Oh, he so would. Ha!

I'm thinking Nine might have just returned her slap and had done with it.

Bwahahahaha!

That's the scene that just screams IN-LAWS at that point, that afterwards, he's going through the mail like it's something he always does (because he's home, aw!). I'd like to think he started subscribing to stuff specifically to get mail or he goes through Rose's. You know he looks through her Cosmos when she's asleep. He totally takes the quizzes.

I adore that he tells her to put him down. Jackie is shorter than Rose and she just man-handles him. It's a thing of beauty.

As far as the fic, if you feel that it's not going to happen, then it's not. I've dropped stories in other fandoms because I lost the plot or it's just too long. I think you said it best, if it's not fun, but work, why bother?

Oh, that's a hysterical thought! After RotC/AoS, the Doctor's stuck at Jackie's for a few days while Rose decompresses. Jackie drags Rose off shopping one afternoon and, bored out of his fickin' mind, the Doctor begins filling out magazine subscriptions.

You know he looks through her Cosmos when she's asleep. He totally takes the quizzes.

He so does. And he cheats. Mwah.

I adore that he tells her to put him down. Jackie is shorter than Rose and she just man-handles him. It's a thing of beauty.

It really is. :D

Yeah. I've got a few left over from SG-1 that just never ever happened. I've still got them, but I know I'll never finish.

There's a reason this icon's handle is Ewwwww!. XD

I also lovelovelove later with his The Fear of Jackie face when they're in the TARDIS and he's geeking out (and by the looks of it, ready to snog Rose) and she stops him dead in his tracks by telling him Jackie's still on board. Hee!

[identity profile] principia-coh.livejournal.com 2007-09-18 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm envisioning him sitting and dutifully filling out all of those send-away-for-free-information type postcards in the back of magazines.

Oh, and don't let him near one of those catalogs of catalogs, man!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-09-18 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a reason this icon's handle is Ewwwww!. XD

That expression kills me every time. No one could rub him the wrong way quite like Jackie. :D

YES.

And then he got back at her later, which was HYSTERICAL.

Oh, I really did adore the Doctor and Jackie's relationship because by the end, he was pretty much in the same place we saw Rose way back in "Rose" with her. That whole phone conversation with him and the "shh! shh! shh! *hangs up*" reminded me so much of when Rose called Jackie to make sure she was safe, and promptly hung up on her when she found out she was. It's this whole "family" kind of thing, where you love 'em, but sometimes you can't stand 'em. :D

"Oooh, a sample for something that will make me feel fresh? No idea what that is, but sometimes I *don't* feel fresh, especially after fleeing for my life. Wonder if it goes in your shoes? I'm getting it! 'Dr John Smith, Powell Estate.'"

[identity profile] goldy-dollar.livejournal.com 2007-09-19 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Muha! I really shouldn't give out any advice on writing multi-chapter fics. I'm pretty sure I've left WIPs dangling in pretty much every fandom I've ever left. :D

What if instead of making it into a big multi-chapter story, you post one-shots from that universe? Oooh! Like a series! TOTALLY how the BBC only gives us 13 episodes a year instead of 22! But yours could be the Christmas specials! Or something!

That way, you can write what you WANT and not feel guilty, and you don't have to worry about up and leaving your readers hanging one day. And maybe a plot will come to you. Or maybe not. Who cares?! I want fluff. *greedy*

Also, if you ever want to talk fic, I think you have my email. I like talking fic. :D And procrastinating from my homework!

[identity profile] misssara11.livejournal.com 2007-09-19 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
He totally would. And then he'd start getting address labels and start using those to make sure everything is spelled correctly (and where else is he going to use).

The Doctor would so get The Sharper Image catalog just to mock what's in there (and then order the life-sized Superman and Spiderman, forget about that and get an irate Jackie call when they end up on her doorstep).

Why does the sequel need to have a plot? Can't it just be about how Rose and the Doctor fumble their way into a relationship and how Jack sleeps with everyone else on the TARDIS. Let's face it, that's the stuff most of us want to read.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-09-19 01:19 am (UTC)(link)

Oh, naughty you! :D

(And this is why when I do read fic, I *absolutely* refuse to read WIPs. No frickin' way.)

I suppose I could, but...I don't know. I guess since the first one was plotty, I wanted anything else to be in the same format. Otherwise I could simply write unrelated fluff fics.

That way, you can write what you WANT and not feel guilty, and you don't have to worry about up and leaving your readers hanging one day. And maybe a plot will come to you. Or maybe not. Who cares?! I want fluff. *greedy*

Heh. Actually, I'm pretty sure I've already spammed my D/R filter with snips from most the fluffy scenes. :D

Also, if you ever want to talk fic, I think you have my email. I like talking fic. :D And procrastinating from my homework!

Cool!

And I totally didn't just have the idea of creating yet another community called The Writer's Block where people could throw out "what the hell do I do here??" and people could fling suggestions at them.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-09-19 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
BWAH!! But...PLOT! :D

Then make the sequel about the Doctor's new new Companion, Jojo Michelle, and how she fixes the TARDIS' chameleon circuit.

Seriously, just write the damn thing already. :P

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-09-19 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
*cries*

[identity profile] queenrikki-hp.livejournal.com 2007-09-19 09:02 am (UTC)(link)
Ha, I've never finish anything (except for creative writing class assignments). I've got at least three prequels to a long story I want to write. The long story. Four separate short stories. A lot of them have been at least a year in the works. Oh, and then there's the original novel I've been working on for two years without making any real headway.

[identity profile] sensiblecat.livejournal.com 2007-09-19 09:52 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'd sign up for that. I blocked for about three months in the middle of "The Way We Were". Mind you, I had got myself into a scene involving Rose, Ten, Three, Sarah Jane (1973), Sarah Jane (2007), Mickey, Jackie, an OC, Jack, Owen, Gwen and Annie from Life on Mars....

Sometimes I just skip ahead, write the bit I want to write and then go back and fill the gaps later. Also I skim every DW story I can lay my hands on, including the annual storybooks, which are very well written. Don't let the terrible illustrations put you off. They all give me ideas and, let's be honest, it wouldn't be DW without recycled plots.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-09-19 02:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally skip around to write different parts first and play connect the dots later. I think my recent SJS fic and the Doctor/Boe crackfic were the only fics I've *ever* written from start to finish. Usually it's just a scene or a line at a time and often I've got the ending down first.

Speaking of recycled plots, I really *should* get back to watching Classic Who. I think it helped put me into writing mode, especially since there were a few scenes that talked about some Classic stuff.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-09-19 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Kindred spirit! It's a bit maddening, isn't it?

You should totally come play in [livejournal.com profile] 4thwalltheatre. Your crazy would be most welcome. *nodnodnodnodnod*

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-09-19 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw you posting about that! And other than that little loose SG-1 thing we did a few years ago, I'm not exactly sure how to do something like that. *is intimidated*
ext_5608: (play)

[identity profile] wiliqueen.livejournal.com 2007-09-19 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Is designed to not be intimidating! Is for people who can't spend their whole day on it. *puppydog eyes*

You make a journal, show up, and make it up as you go along. The intent is for it to be very laid-back. She who started it will need to be locked up if it isn't. But we do need at least a few more peeps.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-09-19 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
So you make an actor journal and then just kind of interact with people?
ext_5608: (play)

[identity profile] wiliqueen.livejournal.com 2007-09-19 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup. And make up stuff in the town if you want. You can be any fictional character; they've been mysteriously transported there by Powers Unknown.

There's a River Walk. It should have ducks. *nods sagely* (There's a separate comm for stuff happening in the town, [livejournal.com profile] 4wseacouver. And [livejournal.com profile] 4thwplaynotes if you just want to watch.)

The only stuff scheduled are the rehearsals and performances. Which are likely to be fairly wacky themselves. The plan right now is for auditions to happen next Monday, but Kiki and I have been interacting a bit and fleshing out the environment for people to play in. (Mostly her on that last. She rocks at the world-building.)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-09-19 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
So is there a list of fictional characters to choose from? Or can you be any made up character?

Not that I'm planning on doing this, probably. Man, I just have so much on my plate right now.
ext_5608: (play)

[identity profile] wiliqueen.livejournal.com 2007-09-19 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope, anybody from any universe.

Not that I'm planning on doing this, probably. Man, I just have so much on my plate right now.

Totally understand. Maybe dip your toe in as an audience member on [livejournal.com profile] 4thwplaynotes. Then you can just watch, or heckle, or whatever, and see if you like it.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-09-19 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I might have to think about it. It is tempting to sign up as an actor...
