Wow. I remember people commenting about it back when it first came out, but does anyone know why exactly DW's S3 is $30 more than S1 or S2? (Both of which I considered to be pricey enough for 13/14 episodes. $70 is plenty when I could pick up a 22 episode SG-1 season for half that.) But $100?

Well, I seriously doubt I'll be getting that for Christmas.

ETA: And I can't ask for any new Nancy Drew games because I kinda sorta own them all now. WHAT?! Shudup.

[identity profile] swankkat.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Believe me, had I not been able to find it for less than $70, I wouldn't have bought S3.

I recommend checking out deepdiscount.com. They have it for $68.89, and free shipping.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, they do. It wouldn't be tacky to add that site to my list, would it? NOPE. :D

[identity profile] principia-coh.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Quick note: if you belong to Columbia House, they currently have it for $59.99, without doing any coupon/funcash gimmicking.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Sadly, am not.

[identity profile] 04nbod.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Its the other way around in england. Series 2 is shamelessly expensive

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
That's so odd.

[identity profile] principia-coh.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
When S1 and S2 first came out, their full MSRP was also $100.

I got mine for $55 via a combination of offered discount and an added coupon from Barnes & Noble.

Deep Discount is another good place to check; if you can wait until their annual couponage next summer, you'll get yet another 20% off your purchase.

You could always wait until just after Christmas, when the price is sure to drop again, or... checking Costco... BJs... Buy.com: $68.98, and then there are coupons here.

I fully support buying all the Who stuff you can get your mitts on (goodness knows I have), but the BBC and the Who team don't get any more money than they were paid at the wholesale level, so why not get it as reasonably as you can?

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)

Were they?

Well then I wonder why *Amazon* has the price difference? I originally bought S1 and S2 from Amazon, and they were already at that approx $68 price, even when S2 was first released. Maybe they got good sales off it and figured they no longer have to mark down?

This is very very true.

Heh. I've sunk my share of money in DW what with the DVDs and all the novels. :D

[identity profile] principia-coh.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)

I think you hit the nail on the head with that one.

[identity profile] jennsthedevil.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I got mine via Amazon when it was first released for about $65.00. Amazon's prices tend to fluctuate a lot after the first couple of weeks. But other websites have it in the 60 dollar range right now.

I can never understand the price of the DW boxed sets...I bought all the Buffy and Angel boxed sets when they came out and the were always around $38...for twice the number of episodes. It's a bit irritating.

I've got all the DW eps on my computer...shh...but I always buy the boxed sets when them come out. Partly because I like to have them on disk, but mostly because I think its good to support programing/writers/actors I like and to show that there's a market in the US for British programing. Still the cost leaves me scratching my head sometimes.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Note to self: Never get DVDs from Amazon again.

And I'm enough of a show fangirl that I probably should be getting the S3 DVDs. (Although honestly, if it wasn't for [livejournal.com profile] dwrewatch I don't know how long it'd be before I'd actually watch anything from S3 again.)

[identity profile] jennsthedevil.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I was really debating buying S3...there are a few really good episodes, but a lot of mediocre eps. Mostly I bought it because 1) I'm anal and once I start buying a series I have to have all of them and 2) There were rumors that the outtake of the Nine/Jack kiss (where apparently CE and JB really got into it and were rolling around on the ground while making out) from S1 were going to be included...and I REALLY wanted to see that. Sadly, the rumors turned out not to be true. :(

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
DAMN! I really really really really want S1 outtakes. :(

[identity profile] jennsthedevil.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Tell me about it. Apparently, the S1 outtakes were lost for awhile, but then RTD said they had been found...and I WANT TO SEE THEM!

But, knowing how big corporations work, they'll probably wait a few years and then put out a new S1 DVD set with all the outtakes and extra features, hoping that people who want to see them and've already bought all the boxed sets will shuck out another $70 for new footage. *eyeroll*

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, probably. BAH.

I've seen the Dalek outtake where the Doctor mauls Rose, but I wanna see the rest!

[identity profile] javabreeze.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I picked series 2 a few weeks ago at Best Buy for $90! Well, technically I didn't buy it but still. I can get two Sg1 box sets for that price. I was really tempted to get season 10.

Everywhere I went s3 was cheaper than s2. Odd.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
It seems like Amazon's the only place that has S3 significantly higher than S2. WEIRDNESS.

OMG. And here I was complaining about spending $38 on the S1/S2 boxset (this only comes out to 15 episodes) of Northern Exposure. Ow.

(Now that I really don't get. The other sets are the same price for 24 eps. Hmmm.)

My recommendation? Chuck 'em for due South DVDs. (Didn't you say you were thinking about getting into that? Paul Gross as a Mountie...) $15 a season! No extras, but hell, $15...

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
$15 for a whole season?? Um, WOW. I do have that show on the back burner - watched the first episode a while back. Might have to just go and get that.

Heh. That's how I got hooked on Veronica Mars - they had S1 DVDs for $18.
icepixie: (Fraser hat)

[personal profile] icepixie 2007-12-11 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I think S2 was $14, because it's only 18 rather than 24 or 26 episodes, and the other two were $18. Everything was definitely under $20, anyway. Check out deepdiscountdvd.com. (And yeah, the quality is about what you would expect from a DVD set of under $20, but no worse than analog cable, really.)

You should totally invest in them, for dS is awesome.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think I'd care much about extras or high-def with something like that anyway.

[identity profile] greenpear.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm puzzled by the differences between the prices of different shows. Personally I tend to pick up the odds and endz at cheaper prices. I just found the boxed set for TimeSlip at my local Half-Price bookstore for under $20.

It's amazing how many orphaned shows end up there (and some really good ones too).

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll bet! You really can find cheap entertainment if you want it.

[identity profile] greenpear.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually open all the emails from Amazon cause they let me know when DVDs go on sale. I've found a couple I wouldn't have gone searching for. Got the first season of She Spies for $15 earlier this year. :)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm. Maybe I should look at those emails when they come in... :D

(Anonymous) 2007-12-12 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
And at Overstock.com I picked up the live-action Tick series for $21.

You have to hover around these sites constantly but there are deals to be had... I was going to buy the first season of Acapulco H.E.A.T. for $8 until I found the Tick.

I'm still looking for Pamela Anderson's series V.I.P (real cheap)

[identity profile] greenpear.livejournal.com 2007-12-12 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
That previous anonymous commetn was me. Didn't log on after the browser crashed...

[identity profile] solielle.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. $99.95 is the base (no discounts, no specials) price for all Seasons of Doctor Who. It's....slightly ridiculous. I can get the entire run of The West Wing (seven seasons) for twice that. Less if I get discounts. So Deep Discount is good, or coupons plus sales, and sneakiness like that, or just general DVD sales.

I have no idea why Doctor Who is so expensive, but I'd assume it's a conflux of being imported from the BBC, the Confidentials (which are practically an extra series unto themselves) and just the cult status of the series. I don't know.

And I can't ask for any new Nancy Drew games because I kinda sorta own them all now. WHAT?! Shudup.

*giggles a little*

I suppose. *picks one reason*

Dear Diary:

Today I woke up in the 30s. The hell? Oh well, Ned seems to be nowhere in sight, so that's a blessed relief...

[identity profile] solielle.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
TRUE FACT: Because "The Secret of the Old Clock" was the first game I played, and because I was vaguely familiar with only the old Nancy Drew books, I figured all the games would be all Old School and 1930's.

And then in the next game I got a cell phone and the internet. *lapses into culture shock*

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Awwwwwww! :D

I kinda like the cell phone thing - except for when you're in an area where it's out of range AND THERE ARE PEOPLE MOVING AROUND INSIDE ABANDONED BUILDINGS SO YOU JUMP ON YOUR HORSE AND GET THE HELL OUT OF THERE.

[identity profile] solielle.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
*laughs*

OMG THAT SECTION AS SO FREAKY. There is a bit where a curtain twitches in both the text and on the screen. And then I whimpered a little and high-tailed it out of the town, hoping that someone in the game would e sympathetic.

(And they WEREN'T. The cold hearted bastards.)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Tell me about it! Any time Nancy almost dies, the reaction is usually, "huh."

(Of course, then you get to Blackmoor Manner and you don't WANT sympathy from anyone. In fact, you really want to bolt yourself in your room and wait for the second half of your plane ticket to kick in.)

[identity profile] measi.livejournal.com 2007-12-12 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
All three were $100 at issue. The older ones have gone down in price. Last week S2 was $100 at Borders here in RI.

But yeah, I definitely recommend getting it via online methods - watch for sales and such. OR, next round of Barnes & Noble coupons, I can work with you to get it cheaper 'cause I'm a member there.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-12-12 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I just sorta boggle at the price on these. Really, it's why I never bought Farscape DVDs even though I really loved the show at the time.

If I don't get it for Christmas, I might cave and start a hunt for the cheapest price.

[identity profile] taogrl.livejournal.com 2007-12-12 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Have you learned the secret of copying those ND games? I tried to do it for my niece and they did not work. Is there a super sekrit way that I'm to busy to find?

I find them so fun. Do you know if there is a birdseye map avail when in there? I have trouble remembering where I am. Too old for them maybe.

Good luck with S3.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-12-12 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't tried copying any of them, so I haven't a clue about that. :-\

And I don't recall ever seeing an overhead map for any of the games. Would be handy though, wouldn't it?

Why am I not surprised? xD

I wish the SG-1 DVDs were around $35. Last I checked I think they were around $50 (CDN). Don't quite remember DW prices [seeing way back then I was only mildly intrigued by this cult sci fi show that sometimes showed up on CBC].

Ignoring book prices right now. *sighs*

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-12-12 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
It is rather annoying to find such price differences, especially between the U.S. and Canada. Yeesh. But I guess it all has to do with the distributer or whatever.

[identity profile] starlightmoonla.livejournal.com 2007-12-12 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
I completely understand how you feel. Back when I first bought S1 I couldn't believe that I was actually shelling out nearly $70 - 80 dollars for 13 episodes. I was definitely not used to that but it became easier to handle if I just purchased it from Amazon as a pre-order which normally would have been around $66 and free shipping.

I'm not sure where the best place is to get it at this point. I bought S3 at best buy for close to $70 I believe which was the "cheapest price" disregarding Amazon. *I kind of wanted the dvds that quickly* And the only place I thought to look, Circut City had all three series at $100 each?!

You can always put it on your wishlist or ask for a gift card and just pay the rest yourself... at least that's what I end up doing sometimes. ^_^"

Good luck!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-12-12 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, that gift card thing would be a good idea! If someone doesn't want to shell out that much money for the DVDs, I'll take an Amazon gift card, sure!
