DW: Survival

Survival (Seven, Ace)
  • Very last classic TV episode ever. I didn't know it was a Master one until the DVD menu (yeesh, thanks for ruining the surprise there), but seems a bit fitting the last one's a Master ep.

  • I have no idea why the Cheetah People wound up on Earth. There was something about only being able to go "home" and so no clue how they wound up there in the first place. Also, I'm not sure why the Master didn't hop over to Gallifrey the second he started to turn, since obviously he could control it unlike others. The Doctor did it himself later on, taking him back to the TARDIS. (Awwwww.) Or maybe the Master's home is the Joe's Crab Shack in Lawrenceville, New Jersey these days, but he still should have been able to figure out getting off the planet first. Or...hopped a ride with one of the kitties? However, other plot holes aside, after being traumatized by the last two Seven eps – The Curse of Fenric and Ghost Light – this episode is actually linear!! So... \o/

  • The beginning of this episode reminded me a lot of the beginning to "Fear Her." Quiet street, people vanishing, and even cats. :D This time around Ace is the one babbling on while the Doctor's the one noticing all the missing people.

  • The Doctor takes Ace home for a visit. She wants to try and find her friends, and doesn't care much about hearing that her family's declared her missing – doesn't care in a very emo 16-year-old way, not that she's oblivious. Seems like they were starting to do more involved character stuff with Ace than they had ever really done with any other companions.

  • The Doctor arrives on the scene and the Master immediately starts obsessing about him.

Master: I've been a very naughty boy. I think someone needs a spanking.
    Doctor: WTF?

Master: See this tree? I planted it for you. It's dead now.
    Doctor: Erm...

Master: And this carving depicts the first time you punished me for all eternity. *sighs* Lovely, isn't it?
    Doctor: NUT. JOB.

Master: You're not the Doctor! God, what did I do last night?

Master: Mirror, mirror on the wall, who loves the Doctor most of all? HATE! I said hate! You all totally heard it!

Master: I am going to chintz the hell out of this place.
    Doctor: ...

Master: "Seems we must always meet again."
Doctor: "They do say that opposites attract."
Me: *SPORFLES* You really should stop encouraging him, Doctor.

  • Awwwww! See, now this is a paternal-type relationship. And an adorable one at that.

  • The final scene of the classic TV series:

    "Where to now, Ace?"

    "Home."

    "Home?"

    "The TARDIS."

"Yes. The TARDIS. There are worlds out there where they sky is burning, where the sea's asleep and the rivers dream. People made of smoke and cities made of song. Somewhere there's danger. Somewhere there's injustice. Somewhere else the tea's getting cold. Come on, Ace, we've got work to do."

    That's downright lovely. :)

*gigglesnorts*

I swear your recaps are always better than the episodes themselves.

Ha! Thanks!

You know, drunken recaps on classic Who would be especially hysterical. :D

You know, Seven and Ace are [livejournal.com profile] selenak's favorite Doctor&Companion. She's always trying to get me to watch them. I'll have to see what I can do about that--they do look like a sweet pair. And not in the way Captain Jack means it.

They really are sweet together. I think one of my favorite moments is when they argue about who gets to play with a bomb. Ace reeeeally loves to make things go boom. :D

My only problem is that some of these late episodes don't make a lick of sense. They're big jumbled messes. Like "Ghost Light" started with a completely cool premise, as well as some great Ace character stuff (with the Doctor doing that paternal mentoring thing), but the episode quickly gets into the realm of WTFery. Still no idea what happened in that episode. RTD's got NOTHING on some of these episodes.

this was my very first classic who episode

The Doctor arrives on the scene and the Master immediately starts obsessing about him.

I noticed that. Of course, it helped that I’d already seen the season three finale. <g>

Master: “Seems we must always meet again.”
Doctor: “They do say that opposites attract.”
Me: *SPORFLES* You really should stop encouraging him, Doctor.

ROFL. And they do meet again in the very next episode (the 1996 movie). And then the Master is the first Time Lord the Doctor runs into after the destruction of Gallifrey. I swear, it’s like the writers want people slashing them.

Awwwww! See, now this is a paternal-type relationship. And an adorable one at that.

Isn’t it just? I watched this episode a couple of weeks after season three ended, and I remember thinking, “All Doctor-Companion relationships should be like this.” (Of course, that’s probably a little bit trickier when the Doctor looks like David Tennant, but still.)

“There are worlds out there where they sky is burning, where the sea’s asleep and the rivers dream. People made of smoke and cities made of song. Somewhere there’s danger. Somewhere there’s injustice. Somewhere else the tea’s getting cold. Come on, Ace, we’ve got work to do.”

It’s on par with the “turn of the earth” speech, really.

HA! Yeah, in that context there's just no mistaking the obsession. :D

I still say that RTD's entire S3 plan boiled down to wanting to read Doctor/Master over the summer. ;)

Eh, I like a little variety. But this definitely was one of the more interesting/enjoyable ones, IMO.

It’s on par with the “turn of the earth” speech, really.

I wonder if they knew they were canceled at that point. There's a bit of finality to it, but yet it's also letting the Doctor stroll off to adventures we'll never see.

That… makes a disturbing amount of sense. ;)

Eh, I like a little variety.

Well, now that you mention it, I liked the Doctor’s relationships with Jack, Mickey, and Jackie (if you count Jackie as a companion), and those were all different. I think what I really like is the affection that all those relationships had in common, and I saw it in the Doctor-Ace relationship. (I’m hoping it’s part of the Doctor-Donna relationship, too.)

I wonder if they knew they were canceled at that point.

My magic 8-ball says, “Signs point to yes.” Which makes sense, since it’s more a voiceover than part of the dialogue.

*sigh* It was a good, if sad (and temporary ;), ending to my childhood scifi addiction.

Hee! I totally wanted to be Ace, she was the coolest. :D

Awwwwww.

It's funny, I didn't even pay attention to the fact that it's a voiceover. Nice.
