Commenting about stuff I've watched in the last couple of days...

After people were talking about The Tudors, I was expecting something way worse. Oh, it's no Rome and I get why people are less than impressed with it, but it wasn't the crapfest I was thinking it'd be. It's very junk food-y. I was entertained enough while watching it, but afterwards I started thinking about the problems... A big problem seems to be story editing. They can't seem to decide what to focus on, and so you'll get this random scene of a person, and then they disappear. Also, from what I understand, the historical accuracy of it makes historians of all times roll over in their now or future graves. But since I've got the bare minimum for this period stored in my mind, it doesn't bug me like it probably should. ("Henry had lots of wives. One of them was named Ann Boleyn. I think she might have been the mother of Elizabeth, but don't quote me on that." Yup. That about covers it.)

Anyway, it's all very much like a trashy romance novel you take with you to the beach. I'm gonna keep watching it, although I seriously doubt I'll ever get the urge to post about the individual episodes.

DW: The Invasion (Two, Jamie, Zoe)
  • First off, I've decided that Two and Jamie are pretty much Shaggy and Scooby.

  • This was a Cybermen episode, and there's so much here that reminds me of S2's "Rise of the Cybermen." Lots of similar elements and characters to it (like radio waves instead of Bluetooths, the guy who thought he could control them, emotions as a weapon...), and I've decided I kinda liked that. As opposed to being all "they ripped off this episode!" (Not that it was identical, obviously. Loads of differences.) But it was about the Cybermen getting a foothold on Earth, and I really do like that it was re-imagined for the Alt!Earth using similarities. Everything in RotC was about alt!characters who were the same, but really not. Same went for the Cybermen.

  • Really huge UNIT episode. Battling the Cybermen mostly involved brute force.

  • Zoe's growing on me. She had been fairly generic to me - basically yet another in a long line of Susan clones in the early years - but she's starting to distinguish herself. (Yeah, slapping on "math genius" didn't automatically turn her into a unique character to me.)

  • Jamie was completely absent from the finale (only turning up at the very end). When I noticed he was missing, it took me forever to remember that he'd been shot and so was...elsewhere. Wiki's telling me that the actor was on vacation and that's why he wasn't in it. Huh.

I love The Tudors. I think they may have shut out a lot of potential storylines by melding Henry's 2 sisters into one, but truthfully, anything that has Tudor history in I tend to love no matter what!

As bad as I am, I had no idea that Henry even had a sister when she turned up. (Or two, for that matter.) I really like her in this though.

what i like about the tudors is that there are only 2 likeable characters, Catherine and Thomas more. Anne is a bitch presented as the reason for centuries of religious unrest and Henry is a whore but its JRM so i can forgive him xD

as for the invasion, i haven't seen it but your shaggy scooby comparison is so spot of from what I've seen of 2 and jamie.

I think my major problem with The Tudors, while it's completely compulsive viewing, they've basically ruined any chance of it being a long running show by completely erasing the existance of major future people in English and Scottish history.

I can't get over the fact that if you took their history to be true, then it's almost certain we wouldn't exist like this today. Considering there's no reason for it, then why?

But I still watch it. Hah. I just worry that people out there thinks it's true.

Yeah, I noticed that - most of the main characters you don't even really care for that much.

It was a light bulb moment! :D

Considering there's no reason for it, then why?

Why make it, you mean? Um...the sex? :D (Actually, while it is explicit, it's a bit boring, IMO. Gimme Rome any day.)

Would have been nice if it'd been a wee bit more accurate though.

I watched The Invasion recently and thought exactly the same about RotC/TAoS, it's sort of oddly fascinating. Obviously they are different episodes, but things like Cybus Industries using a company called International Electromatics as a front makes you realise the parallels are most likely intentional.

Oh yeah, totally intentional. It's kinda cool how much they have pulled from the classic series.

I tried watching the Tudors. I even went so far as to download legally obtain season one. I just couldn't get into it. I still found it boring after three episodes, so I gave up.

You'd think it would be a bit more interesting. I'm not exactly sure what it is about it.
