I think I must be in a mood today. I was looking up wiki's page on DW's companions (for the life of me I was blanking on Turlough's name), and got into a snit.
Why exactly would Astrid be considered a companion and not, say, Mr. Copper? HMPH, I SAY! (You could argue that Astrid wanted to travel with the Doctor, but SO DID MR. COPPER.) Also, was Grace ever in any audios or books where she actually traveled with the Doctor? Because I want to kick her out of the "companion" club as well. I mean, going on the premise that anyone who hangs around the Doctor, helping him solve the case during an episode should be included, why wouldn't Tommy from S2 be a "companion?" Or Tellulah from S3? HHHHMMMMMPPPPHHHHH.

They differentiate between friends and companions. For Series Four, it lists the following people as companions...
Donna, Rose, Jack, Martha, Mickey, Sarah-Jane.
Listed as 'friends and allies' are...
Jackie Tyler, Wilfred Mott
Of course, they've not got such a breakdown for the other series yet, and VotD, for some reason, gets put in with Series 3, even though it's on the Series 4 boxset.
Following the BBC's logic, though, I'd say that even Donna in TRB would be a friend and ally rather than a companion. And Jenny, even though she was going to travel with the Doctor and Donna, shouldn't qualify as a companion either.
I'm willing to cut people a bit of slack on Astrid, because I attribute part of the elevation of her status not to the fact that it's Kylie Minogue, but that Ms. Minogue basically came in and helped out above and beyond the call of duty while David Tennant was dealing with the aftermath of his mother's passing.
I'll note that as I predicted at the time, after the Confidential turned out to be about 90% Kylie material, she indeed stepped up to the plate and did the video diary for the special as well. I wouldn't have wanted to see DT trying to be 'on' for people out of a sense of obligation, and it reflects well on the Who family that the thought doesn't seem to even have crossed their minds. Or if it did, KM relieved him of that burden.

I'm not in the Who fandom, so I didn't hear anything about this (eep, poor man), but what did she contribute? I mean, go her, I'm not trying to deny she helped. I just don't know what she did, that's all. Mostly the Confidential and the video diary?

Apparently she was also super-supportive in general, and took on a lot of the daily general team leadership kind of stuff DT normally does.

And that's nice that she did that.

(Of course, ask me how motivated I am to watch for myself when I get home. Doctor Who-style Christmas is depressing as hell. Well, except the first one.)
