Iiinteresting.

According to SFX's review of RTD's new book, originally Ianto was supposed to die instead of Owen, but they changed it at the last minute.

I really wasn't broken up about Owen dying (Tosh on the other hand made me sad), and I'm not sure I'd have been that broken up about Ianto dying either. I wonder what made them switch? Although, I will say that killing off Owen made much more sense at that point. Unless it was Ianto that who was supposed to get the whole undead storyline.

Hmmm, Ianto would have been undead and Jack can't die? That's... weird.

You do realize that all the people who hate Gwen probably would have blamed her if Ianto died?

OMG Ianto!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank God he's alive. I love Owen but I just can't live without Ianto on TW.

Would have added an interesting dynamic to their relationship, that's for sure.

Well, of course! After all, she does kill bunnies and stuff.

Well, that's something.

I was definitely one of those who were broken up about Owen dying. Although, if it was Ianto, I certainly wouldn't have cared even a teensy-weensy bit.

Killing Owen makes much more sense though. There was the whole idea of Tosh and Owen dying. Together. Which was built up throughout the second series. The ending felt more potent with those two particular characters dying, especially with Tosh's love towards Owen. Also, there was the whole conversation in the last episode over never having got their date. They finally got there only to die!

Nah, I just can't see it working it with Ianto. Although, Torchwood will definitely be weird without snarky Owen.

*PATS*

He's starting to grow on me more. Finally. The audio play helped.

I'll bet she even wears them as slippers!

*nods* I wonder if it was decided Tosh should die after they switched to Owen. But anyway, there would have been a lot lost if it was Ianto instead. Although they probably would have ramped up something with Jack.

Very different. At least it sounds like any additions will come after next series. I think? It sounds like it's just going to be the three of them in this upcoming short episode arc.

You know, I think Owen's storyline in s2 was perfect and sad and I can't imagine Ianto doing it in his place and I love him.

BUT OMG WHAT. RTD SECRETLY HATES ME Y/Y?

Yes, I am aware RTD doesn't know I exist.

OWEN.

I am still not over Owen, btw. In case you couldn't tell. Therapy time, do you reckon?

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-09-18 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
SHE DOES.

Yup, probably definitely, I'd say. ;) It'll also give the new head writer & producer to get to grips with these three first.

It would have been very different. I could see them exploring stuff with Jack instead of Tosh if it was Ianto. Makes me wonder if Tosh would have even died if it was Ianto.

Possibly.

I still wouldn't mind seeing Mickey turn up as a regular. But it sounds like FA's involved in other things now, so Martha probably won't be around. Shame.

[identity profile] solielle.livejournal.com 2008-09-18 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I..don't know what to think of this? Tosh was the real heartbreaker for me, because she was the only character after S1 that I felt for. Owen's undead arc in S2 made him interesting, and Tosh's feelings for him amped up their final scenes. I'm not sure that would have been the same with Ianto.

It's weird. I like Owen more as a character, but right now I think Ianto dying would have been a bad choice. But I'd much rather have Owen still on Torchwood than Ianto! Because I Ianto boring! And inconsistent! I don't know! Bah! Stupid Torchwood.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-09-18 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Overall I was really satisfied with the end of Owen's arc. It made sense, which can be rare among all the crack. :D

Ianto...I think he suffers from some bad writing at times. Like you said - inconsistent. Maybe it's good that RTD is helming this shortened series. He might be able to solidify his character a bit better, as well as even out the relationships between the three characters, so that the next showrunner can start off with something a bit more solid.

OMG I probably would have watched again if they kiled Ianto. I adore Ianto (sometimes), but I hate hate hate fandom and I would have laughed a merry laugh for quite a while.

Hmm. I only feel a little bad about saying that too, I really shouldn't be so fandomly hypocritical XD

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-09-18 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
That's one thing nice about not getting involved in Torchwood fandom. I only hear about the annoying stuff every once in a while instead of seeing a lot of it.

[identity profile] millylicious.livejournal.com 2008-09-18 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
It might have been good though, they could have been forced to reevaluate their relationship (Jack and Ianto) that is, since they couldn't have sex ...Oh, well, I guess they could, but it wouldn't have been very pleasant for Ianto, just on the receiving end.

[identity profile] millylicious.livejournal.com 2008-09-18 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Just saying though, would Ianto have had the same undead arc or would he have just died at the end of the series? I would have loved the undead storyline for Ianto, but I don't think him dying at the end of the series would have had the same intensity the double Owen/Tosh death had - her feelings (and his too) had much to do with making the whole thing emotional, especially on Tosh's end. I think a Ianto/Tosh death would have fallen very short of that.

[identity profile] javabreeze.livejournal.com 2008-09-19 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Don't get me wrong, I love Ianto but I love Owen more. I would rather had Ianto die instead. I still miss my bb.

[identity profile] okelay.livejournal.com 2008-09-19 07:31 am (UTC)(link)
you know, I really, really hate that they killed Owen, but I also can't see Ianto doing the whole undead arc.

I have to admit, I am quite bitter about the whole thing.Owen was my favourite from the start.
part of me think that Ianto's kinda like torchwood's pet so there's no way they'd kill him. the fandom backlash would be too much.

and no offence, but Burn Gorman is,IMO,a better actor than...Gareth-what's-his-name.sorry, can't remember it.
at least based on what I've seen on the show.

but still, I wish Ianto had died in the actual finale and they'd found a way to bring Owen back. and then he could've saved Tosh.

[identity profile] jai-23.livejournal.com 2008-09-19 11:02 am (UTC)(link)
I'd love to see Mickey in Torchwood. I've always loved him as a character.

Freema seems to be doing a plethora of other things--there's Little Dorrit, Survivors (or something) and isn't she doing Chibnall's UK version of Law and Order too? She's a busy girl. I liked her in Torchwood, though. They wrote her character well.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-09-19 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm still curious as to what changed their mind about it. I wonder if it was because Ianto is pretty much the only character to bring comic relief to the show, and they wanted to keep that. Or...I've no idea. Heh.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-09-19 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sure that if Ianto was going to die, they really would have hit the Jack/Ianto relationship much harder. Much more indepth relationship stuff being shown.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-09-19 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd love to see Mickey in Torchwood. I've always loved him as a character.

I loved him S2 on, but yeah. I think he'd be really great to have on Torchwood. He pretty much kicks ass. :D

I really liked her on Torchwood as well. Once they got her away from the Plot Arc of Doom on DW, I really started enjoying her character.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-09-19 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I've no idea if they would have given him the undead arc or not. I'd almost think so, since that arc really could only lead to death eventually. It'd be sort of rediculous to have this physically fragile person to continue on for a long period of time.

I really do wonder if Tosh would have died if it had been Ianto. You're right about the impact, and so they might not have done it. Or at least they might have done the Tosh/Owen relationship a bit differently in leading up to it.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-09-19 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)

I sort of can't either. Owen already had all this character depth to him, while Ianto is a bit more comic relief.

He is sort of the pet. Heh. Seems like fandom can usually find a "woobie" on every show. :D

I think I'd agree. Not that I think he's horrible.

but still, I wish Ianto had died in the actual finale and they'd found a way to bring Owen back. and then he could've saved Tosh.

I suppose they always could bring either one back, doing the whole glove thing again. But I'd hope that Jack would have learned his lesson now.
