*cry*

Ever since they "updated" LJ, I've been unable to see links. Oh, I can see visited links, but not new links. Basically, everything within a text post is black, including any links, the header, lj cuts, and even someone's user name. This includes my posts as well as everything on my flist. (Even though my settings say I have link and visited link colors of grey.)

In the comments to the update post, people with a similar problem are saying to plug in your own CSS since LJ getting around to fixing it involves ice cubes and hell or something. The problem is, saying anything CSS to me is like giving me a lecture on String Theory in Greek: I'd like to understand since it obviously involves pretty, swirly string things, but it's just not happening.

Does anyone know exactly what needs to be plugged in to override the link colors? As in...I could cut and paste it without me having to shake someone with "but what are you supposed to put in the space you left with 'insert details here??' I AM DUM AND AM HAVING A CRISIS."

Alternatively, does anyone know any layout communities I could look at to maybe switch to? Maybe it's time for a change from the Boxer way of life. But I want simple. Simple simple simple. Beyond simple. And a side graphic since I hate scrolling past a top graphic. Plus a side graphic you can see all the time.

ETA: [livejournal.com profile] mls03j fixed it!

I think I may be able to help you.

Go here http://community.livejournal.com/freelayouts/1189007.html

And pick which layout you're using. Hopefully there should be pre-given code yo can stick in to make it work again (I think; my layout is fine, as I'm on mixit).

Oh, well, actually, on second thoughts -- that's just titles O__O

*researches your problem*

Eh, it's a locked post anyway. But thanks for trying!

they broke the code used in most custom layout communities as well because they are based on the basic lj themes. I'm using modified code from [livejournal.com profile] refuted and I don't how lj did it but they changed teal fonts to hot pink. I had to go in and fix the custom CSS code for both my journal and [livejournal.com profile] obsessive_caps

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
BAH. How could they muck up something this basic?

Right now I'd almost settle for hot pink links. As is, I've no idea when someone's linking something.

It's not a bug. It's a feature!

Well, I don't know about the side graphics thingy, and I know nothing about CSS, but I can tell you where I got my layouts to use with the headers I've been amassing. As far as I know, any of the layouts can be used without headers.

Anyway, I went to [livejournal.com profile] refuted for the layout. Thought I had another bookmarked, but apparently not. *pouts*

I'll check that place out. Thanks!

[livejournal.com profile] minty_peach might have something your looking for. There's also [livejournal.com profile] thefulcrum.

I feel your pain. A few weeks ago I was trying to figure out transparent background images, then decided on side graphic and hunted, even looked at yours, but in the end I couldn't wrap my head around CSS and went back to the top graphic. If you ever figure it out, I'd love to know how to do it.

It is sad to know my two years as a computer science major went down the drain and I can't figure out how to code anymore.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Fortunately for me, The Boxer style is easily modified so I didn't have to do CSS whatsoever. And I used to dabble in programming myself. C++ But I've long since done a brain dump of it.

[identity profile] reve-silencieux.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I did Pascal, C++, and Assembly language for a few years, and even tried to learn some html on the side but it's all long gone. I looked at Boxer, but wanted something a bit more elegant without all the boxes. I basically drew up what I wanted, but found no layout that was close. *sigh* Oddly enough, I started going through tutorials on CSS, and I sorta figured it out, but it needs the html separately as well, and I couldn't figure out how to put that up when there's only a spot for custom CSS.

Or I could totally be wrong. Oi. My layout still works, it's pretty. I'll probably keep it awhile and forget about trying to be fancy.

Oy poodles. I really do wish the process was a wee bit more simple.

Hmmm, I'm not sure what you mean with needing the html separately, but if you just look for the style you're using in the lj interests, you should find at least one comm that has all the ids and names of the html the style uses. So that should allow you to draw up whatever CSS file you want?

[identity profile] reve-silencieux.livejournal.com 2008-12-10 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
I think when I first started looking into CSS, I was thinking about building an entire layout, not really understanding how to just tinker with an existing layout. Thus the html page that calls all the CSS stuff. Then I started looking for the CSS code of Quite Lickable layout so I could just alter the CSS, couldn't find it and finally gave up. It made my head spin. (my main issue was making the entire background an image and the layout transparent over it, and the image resizing for different resolutions - which I think may be impossible)

You’re trying to change the link colors on your journal, right? They don’t look black to me, so I can’t guarantee this will work. But here’s the code you need:

a:link {color: #163d40;}
a:visited {color: #342410;}

That’ll make your links teal, to match the boxes at the top of the page, and your visited links brown, to match the boxes just below them.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
THAT DID IT!

But unfortunately to get it to do it, I had to turn off the default stylesheet and promptly lost my graphic and a lot of colors.

So I guess to go the CSS route, I'd have to do a code line for everything. What a PAIN.

[identity profile] reve-silencieux.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Are you sure you had to turn off the stylesheet? I use the existing stylesheet but just add a few lines of CSS in the box. But then again, I am using Flexible squares, so I don't know how Boxer works.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
Sadly, yeah.

[personal profile] shaela 2008-12-09 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
Okay. I dug into your stylesheet to try and figure out what was going on, and I think I’ve got it. Try this:

div.entrycontent div a {color: #8d8a72;}

(Delete the other link styles, first.)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
OMGOMGOMG!!! YOU FIXED IT!!!! *SMOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOCH*

Can I do anything for you? Make some icons of something? Or...something? :D

[personal profile] shaela 2008-12-09 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yay!

And you don’t need to do anything for me. Your glee has totally made my night. (Though I wouldn’t say no to the Nine-a-thon you were talking about earlier. <g>)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
You got it! I'll have to pull something together soon!
