  • Does anyone have any recommendations for Champagne? I've never found a Champagne that I really like. I do like Chardonnay, so I should like Champagne, right? (Or sparkling wine - whatever.)

  • They're toning down Torchwood because of US markets? Did they ever stop to think that the reason it's becoming popular in the US is because people like it as it is? "Oh, here's a show that people seem to like. LET'S CHANGE IT!" Bah.

Although I did get a giggle out of JB's statement: I'll still be getting naked and it will still be saucy - but it's done with taste. Totally amused by that for some reason. Maybe because I can picture Jack saying it and everyone else smirking with an "uh huh..." :D

I have to say, I like sparkling grape juice and sparkling cider because they taste good. I recommend Welch's for the grape and Martinelli's for the cider.

For me that's a little too sweet. I'm not really a fan of fruit juice in general just because of the sweet.

1. Prosecco. It's the Italian equivalent. Canella Prosecco di Conegliano is a good one; I can double-check what we used at our wedding when I get home.

2. If toning it down spares us another CyberBarbie episode, I will be pleased.

Le Mousseux Sparkling Cider (out of Virginia) is a good and not quite as sweet sparkling cider, if you want something nonalcoholic.

I had to dig deep into the archives of my LJ (which is quite hard when you don't use tags :P) to find my rec of the 2005 Contadino Pinot Grigio Frizzante. It's a fizzy pinot grigio, which may sound odd, but works really, really well. Here's another rec of it, if you need convincing. :)

White Star Champagne is a good choice.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-12-30 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
1. Oooooh! Thanks!

2. Unfortunately, CyberBarbie probably would have just had an extra plate or two. :D

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-12-30 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
OOOH! I do like Pinot Grigio!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-12-30 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks!!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-12-30 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm going to have to remember that. I don't often have a need for it, but less sweet is good.

[identity profile] ginamak.livejournal.com 2008-12-30 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
(1) How much do you want to spend?

(2) Do you prefer sweet or dry?

[identity profile] roseredathena.livejournal.com 2008-12-30 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I recommend not buying a particularly large bottle if you are going to be around people that irritate you severely. The urge to swing said bottle may become too tempting once the contents have been consumed. I say this with love and from experience.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-12-30 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
1) That probably makes a difference, doesn't it? :D I'd say...up to $40.

2) I prefer dry.

White Star, as mentioned above, can be a good choice. Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label has people who love it and people who hate it and say it's a triumph of marketing and nothing else. I personally find it too acidic, but that's just my taste. It's mostly Pinot Noir, if you like that, and I think some Chardonnay as well.

Tattinger is another one that should be in that $40 range, and I hear good things about it, but I've never tried it.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-12-30 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm. Pinot Noir with Chardonnay sounds interesting.

I think I'm going to take all the recs here with me to the store tonight to see what I can find.

[identity profile] frenchroast.livejournal.com 2008-12-30 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
My favorites are Perrier Jouet and Pol Roger, but can be a little pricey(I spent a weekend in the Champagne region with rich Rotarians when I was in France on a Rotary scholarship, so I was horribly spoiled). If you don't like them sweet, then just look for ones that say "Brut". If you can find "extra brut" then you'll probably like those, too. Avoid "demi-sec", "doux", and "moeulleux" because they're by definition sweeter champagnes.

If it doesn't *have* to be champagne, then try sparkling wines like prosecco and vouvray(make sure the vouvray says sparkling, b/c there's a regular dry white version and a sparkling version). The more important thing for you would probably be the "brut". Of course, you could be like me--I much prefer dry regular wines, and dislike dry champagnes. It's one of those things you just have to experiment with over time. Something else you can do so you have bubbly alcohol that tastes good is to mix it with orange or pineapple juice. It's sacriledge to the French, but my English friends introduced me to it, and I quite like it.

So not only are reducing Torchwood to five episodes we're now getting a dumb-downed version. Is it still going to be worth watching after this???

I can't see anymore long, slow kisses between Jack and Ianto anymore...

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-12-30 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man, I bet that was a fantastic weekend! You know, I had no idea that's what Brut meant - great tip!

It doesn't really have to be champagne - anything sparkling will do. I'll have to keep my eyes open for those.

Unfortunately I know wines - and could easily go into a store and get something good - but champagne is a mystery to me. I like your idea of the orange juice in case I've got leftovers and/or don't really care for it. Thanks!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-12-30 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Well hopefully the crack level won't go down. RTD's helming the storyline (even though he's not writing every episode) so I'm hopeful there will at least be sparkling.

Sometimes the BBC confuse me.

And I dislike champagne so I am of no use there xD

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-12-30 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too. And I'm sure there's gotta be something I would like.

[identity profile] christyj12.livejournal.com 2008-12-30 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I like Mumm Napa Brut, because it's easy to find, not too expenisive (~$20, I think), and I just like the flavor. They have a couple varieties, but I like the Brut the best.

Sigh. Ditto on Torchwood. Stupid American tv execs make the Doctor sad.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-12-30 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, thanks for the rec!

And I think part of the reason I'm watching so much UK TV right now is because it hasn't been homogenized. Bah.

I'm convinced that almost all successful shows are suicidal.

I'm hoping "toning it down" doesn't extend to the Janto (but it probably will). The plus side of this? It'll be easier to watch with my mum. Yes, I watch Torchwood with my mum. Am I crazy? Probably. But I'm not letting her watch Day One. That one probably could have used a bit of toning down. I just need a good excuse for when we're watching the first disc (she hasn't seen most of the first episode) and she points to Day One and asks if she's seen that one and what it was about. I'm considering giving her the description of an episode she's seen, but she tends to forget and will probably think she hasn't seen it yet. I could always have us watch the first episode, then instead of putting the second episode on, claim there's a new episode of NCIS on, or whatever, and switch to that, then wait a week, and when she asks if we finished the disc, tell her that we did.

Sorry for scheming/rambling in your space.

That is the upside - more people can watch it. I know they already made an edited version that the kiddies could watch, which aired later. And I'm sure that if SciFi ever got its hands on it, it'd be hacked up as well.

But...I wish they'd leave it alone.

*random fact ahoy*

[identity profile] pro-hominum.livejournal.com 2009-01-05 12:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I have been reliably informed that Champagne destined for the American market has 40% more sugar in it than what we get in Europe. At least Moet and Chandon does.

I've just come back from a very nice, including a stop over in Epernay which is the capital of the champagne region in France. :)

I like Laurent Perrier pink champagne or Nicholas Feuillate. Mmmmm

Did you find one you liked?

Re: *random fact ahoy*

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-01-05 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't know that! It doesn't surprise me though.

And I wound up with a Mumm Napa Brut. It was nice! It's not something I would get every day, since I probably have to admit I'm not a champagne person, but it was very drinkable.
