Why are the Amish making plastic fireplaces?

BWAHAHA! I would like to know this as well. Chris and I have puzzled over those commercials every time they come on.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
They're crafty devils! The Amish are imposing limits of 2 fireplaces per household! HURRY! BUY NOW!

[identity profile] ivydoor.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Clearly they've been held hostage by aliens and forced to mass produce these obviously technologically advanced fireplaces. They have a limited supply because the aliens have only so much fuel, but they want to ensure every household has one for the inevitable invasion.

Where's Torchwood when you need it?

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
EEK!

(If I weren't so lazy, I'd be tempted to write Jack vs. the Amish Fireplace. :D)

[identity profile] ivydoor.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)
HA! We need to find someone to write this for us, obviously.

[identity profile] threerings.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been puzzled by that one myself.

[identity profile] papilio-luna.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I clearly don't watch enough TV.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe they've gotten bored with their rustic way of life.

[identity profile] erikau.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Aren't they also electric? The plastic fireplaces, not the Amish.

Does anyone remember that sex-changing-aliens-disguised-as-some-Amish-type-group episode of the X files?

By the way, was yesterday one of the shortest trips to the Magic Kingdom ever?

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, the stuff you see when you wake up on the couch at 3 a.m. when the last thing you remember is House.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Aren't they also electric? The plastic fireplaces, not the Amish.

They are!

Does anyone remember that sex-changing-aliens-disguised-as-some-Amish-type-group episode of the X files?

That sounds vaguely familiar. *squints*

By the way, was yesterday one of the shortest trips to the Magic Kingdom ever?

It was. *sighs*

Gender Bender! (With the first appearance of Nic Lea, as not-Krycek.)

Sorry. First fandom trigger. I was apparently incapable of not answering. :D

Although, I am apparently distant enough to typo the title. o_O

Blast you beat me to it with the X-Files trivia!

[identity profile] erikau.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh. Which one was Not-Krycek? Was he the first victim? It's been a very long time since I watched any X-files.

[identity profile] erikau.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Was this one of those, "Drat it, this ticket is only good for x more days and I MUST USE IT!, even though I'm not especially interested" trips? Yeah, we've all had those moments, the sort where you sort of zombie your way through all the 'fun', and wonder how long you have to stay in order to for it to count as a real effort.

[identity profile] shinyopals.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, that ad looks vaguely exploitative of the poor Amish. I'm picturing them being herded around like the Ood in PotO.

What? I'm sane...

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, my pass expires February 15.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)
BWAH!!!

[identity profile] outforawalk.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
If memory serves, he is one of the people in the bar.
*consults DVDs*
Here we go. He comes on right about minute 34.

[identity profile] caffey.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Clearly, I'm living in a saner part of the world. Pity.

[identity profile] brightbeak.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Hubby thinks it is a marketing scam, and that the advertisers are taking advantage of the Amish policy of not being litigenous.

I tend to agree w/ the fact it is exploitive of their good name and heritage, and I don't think they're really involved, maybe a group calling themselves 'amish' small a, verses the reputation that is 'Amish' large A.

I've never seen this commercial before WTF?

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
*is sad for your lack of Amish fireplaces*

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
It really is taking advantage of them. The commercial implies the whole thing is made by the Amish, but it's just the cabinets. (If that. I can't imagine they're mass producing these things.) And you're probably right - they're trusting that they won't get sued.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
You really need to watch more TV at 3 a.m.

[identity profile] ginamak.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm ashamed to say I looked this up.

If you listen carefully during the ad, the Amish only make the wood mantels they stick on the plastic fireplaces. The plastic fireplaces themselves are made in China.

*slinks away*

[identity profile] caffey.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
*sniffles*

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
How very disappointing.

[identity profile] sherbertglasses.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
And it uses electricity, doesn't it? Heathens!

[identity profile] rattus-aerius.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
How can that be real Amish folks? Don't they prefer to not have their pics taken? I'd think that'd include video. Not sure about that, but who wouldn't want a fireplace you can roll around your house? ;)

[identity profile] tsukara.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
.....is that an icon of the Master wearing Aretha Franklin's hat?

[identity profile] tsukara.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
So you...pay three hundred dollars for a mantel slapped together from a few pieces of wood (probably not sustainably harvested)....and get a free crappy plastic heater?

Who on earth thinks that sounds like a good deal?

[identity profile] rattus-aerius.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep! I think he's purdy in it, but he doesn't look very pleased about it. ;)

[identity profile] tsukara.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Not pleased at all...

...

Is it sad that I liked the hat, when I saw it? I didn't realize everyone else thought it was silly!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
It does!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm guessing that's not real Amish folks. :D

And your icon! BWAH!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
But...it rolls!

[identity profile] outforawalk.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
YANA. I thought the hat was awesome.

[identity profile] tsukara.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and I can buy wheels and a screwdriver for twenty bucks at Home Depot to affix wheels to the bottom of something built in shop class.

Hey, maybe this is a viable business plan!

Step 1: build things in shop class
Step 2: Affix wheels and a word connected with quality
step 3: ???
step 4: Profit!

[identity profile] tsukara.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
*spittake at YANA*

What can I say, I like hats? And Aretha's a classy enough ladyto pull 'em off well, amirite?

[identity profile] outforawalk.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! I wish more women still wore hats for things like that. Hats are fun, even if I look terrible in them.

[identity profile] tsukara.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, hats are good and terribly underrated except with women of a certain generation.

It's one of the big reasons I love steampunk so: "Ooo, I can stick random bits on a hat and it works! Hooray!" But I look terrible inthem too. |D

[identity profile] rattus-aerius.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh it's not silly on Aretha. It's fierce!

It's silly on other people though. ;)

[identity profile] tsukara.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, I see! That make sense. This would explain the Obama + Aretha!hat icon I saw as well...

[identity profile] rattus-aerius.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee. I think Obama is the only one besides Aretha who looks good in the hat. He's just that damn cool. ;)

[identity profile] sparky-girl82.livejournal.com 2009-01-26 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
bwahahaha...my first thought after seeing this commercial during CSI NY was WTF??? O_o

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-01-26 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
There you go!

(And randomly - I'm watching a classic Who episode that's TOTALLY Step 1: do this, Step 2: ???, Step 3: PROFIT! :D)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2009-01-26 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
It does boggle the mind, doesn't it?
