Take this with 25 grains of salt, obviously. Those damn DW rumors have driven many people to drink. Um, me to drink. ("Rose is going to be in Last of the Time Lords. I SWEAR.")

I have to admit to a knee-jerk weirding-out reaction to the whole "Smith" thing.

I do tend to flinch when in fandom Ten II is just "John" or "Dave" or "Gomer" and no longer really the Doctor. He's just some dude who looks like the Doctor. (Although then I calm down. See below.)
"Rose Smith" just doesn't sound as good as "Rose Tyler." :D

The name thing doesn't bug me for too long. It's obvious from the unaired (but shot) scene with the altverse TARDIS, that RTD never meant Ten II to suddenly say, "Thank god all that adventure and traveling is over! I'm gonna become an insurance salesman! And I think I'd quite like to take up knitting with Jackie." Even if you don't like the notion of a new TARDIS, I think you could bet it won't be a sedate lifestyle.

I like the new TARDIS idea, but even with that it takes time to grow. Also, I could see them spending more time with the Tyler clan and so on. So a fictitious name for paperwork purposes makes sense. And marriage requires paperwork. :D

*SQUISH SQUISH SQUISH SQUISH* I assume the proposal went something like this:

Doctor: Rose? I think we should get married. This is because I think it would be beneficial for everyone involved and not because that guy over there looked at you for point two seconds beyond the social norm. Plus there would be lots of cake. Not that we couldn't have cake without it, but cake is always good. And this would be important, serious cake. Because this is serious. Also that bloke is gone now, which is good because I was starting to think he had a problem. An alien problem. Well, a half-alien problem, that is. HEH HEH. Get it?

Rose: O_O

Jackie: I CALL DIBS ON WEDDING PLANNING!

Doctor: JAYSUS. H. HORSERADISH. ON SECOND THOUGHT...!

And off they go to have many fabulous adventures where the Doctor likes to come up with as many different terms for "spouse" as he can think of, usually while battling monsters. ("Note to self, 'ball and chain' will get a very dirty look both from Rose and from a Runalian Slime Bear. Runalian Slime Bear much less concerning.")

Anyway, sounds like it's just one scene that BP's doing, so probably no Rose for the regeneration. *sniff* Not sure how just one scene will fit into the bigger scheme of things. Maybe Eleven will send the coat to the altverse? *CROSSES FINGERS*

Can I start "lalalala"-ing at the inevitable "See?? Rose only ever wanted to make the Doctor settle down and get married and pop out babies!" already?

I doubt we'll be seeing much in the way of details in that one scene, but if I had to guess, I'd say the marriage thing would be all his idea. Not that Rose would be opposed, but it's that whole "never had a life like that" that he wants to grab onto.

I hope that's how it happens--and that they make that clear. Because Rose never wanted or needed that. Again, like you said, not that she would be opposed, but because it would have seemed superfluous.

I fear it won't be clear. It'll probably just be a quick scene of the two of them. Maybe a way for DT to walk off into the sunset?

Which would be fine with me, honestly. Have the coat fall from the sky onto them while they're walking on a beach somewhere. He puts it on, she dusts him off, they hold hands and keep going. :)

*L* I love the thought of them married, but I cringe at that name. I never quite liked the John Smith alias, and I really am jolted out of the story when he goes by anything other than "Doctor" in Pete's World fics. Although I understand the necessity, I wouldn't want to see it as canon.

In fact, as much as I would love to see an Alt!verse novel/audio/comic, I am very satisfied with the way they left the storyline on the show, and I don't really want them to mess with it and create one specific version of Alt!Verse canon. That was the beauty of the way it was left: we could decide for ourselves how it evolved from there.

I do like the incredible openness of the altverse, but the siren song of seeing DT and BP being cute is just too damn irresistible! MORE CUTE!

On the other hand, I'm a whore for anything involving Rose and I would hyperventilate at seeing them together on screen again. ;)

Well, as of now I doubt there are any real plans to do something in the altverse. It's fun to hope though.

That's my take on it (if it's real). It may just be how RTD wrote her name in the script, and that's what they put on the call sheet. Sort of like how they referred to Rose as "The Bin Girl" in the S4 script to try and keep the surprise. No one enver uses it in the episode, but RTD is just enjoying himself/messing with fandom.

I was sort of wondering if RTD would be using "Rose Smith" to make it glaringly obvious to all concerned (in a possibly short amount of time) that Rose and Ten II are MARRIED. *sticks tongue out at naysayers* Hah.

Mwah! It wouldn't surprise me. Also, there's always the notion that RTD jots everything down in his sparkly notebook with pictures of the Doctor and Rose all over it with "D+R" in hearts. Also, doodles of the Doctor and Rose's really hot son. *pats RTD*

I was a bit surprised at the whole "Rose Smith" thing, but the more I think about it, the more it makes sense...sort of. Of course Rose and everyone else he actually spends time with will more than likely call him "Doctor", but he would need a legal name if he was actually staying in one place and time for awhile. He couldn't really use Tyler because then it'd be ANOTHER random person in the family showing up that they'd have to explain - plus if they tried to claim him as a long lost relative and he got caught doing inappropriate things with Rose - well, I suppose every universe has a West Virginia. But it could squick people out quite a bit, especially if the Tylers are well known in Pete's Universe.

On the thought of "Would they really get married?" - Well, there could be plenty of reasons for it. They may have wanted to. They may have done it to shut Jackie up. They may have done it for legal reasons (chasing aliens can be dangerous and it's easier to visit someone in the hospital if they're your spouse, etc.). There are also plenty of reasons for Rose taking his legal name, tradition, to shut Jackie up again, etc.

Or it could all be a load of crap and RTD's gonna slap us all in the face with massive amounts of emo and crush my soul for eternity. Whichever. Damn you, RTD, and your brilliance which I can not stay away from!!!

Very good point about yet another random "Tyler" showing up. Also the potential squick factor. (Although I do know two people who got married whose names were both Smith. HEH.)

And since it looks like marriage might be canon, I'm going to think that while Rose would happily get married to him, that a lot was originated in the Doctor's quest to live that live he's never had.

Well, he would have to have a legal name for paperwork. Taking the Tyler name feels a bit incestuous, even though I do know people who married who already had the same family name. Smith feels a bit weirder to me since the advent of Matt Smith, but that's just me...

So, here's how I see it. Rose and Ten II running through a field of flowers hand in hand laughing, in tux and wedding gown (mildly splattered with alien goo because of course aliens attacked and were vanquished), when suddenly The Coat falls from the sky and lands in his head. Both squee, big spinny hug, before a moment of quiet contemplation and slight sadness for the Doctor who gave them each other. They kiss. Fade to black.

Isn't it funny how it can seem that other people aren't watching the same show you are? Because it always seemed obvious to me that it was the Doctor who had issues and expressed a desire for that life he felt he could never have, while Rose was going to be happy with whatever life brought her, as long as she was with him. Anything from "I love it, traveling with you" to "Stuck with you, that's not so bad."

I would take that scenario in a HEARTBEAT. :D *PETS*

And I completely agree with you about Rose and the Doctor's issues. Rose really was ready to travel in the TARDIS for the rest of her life, much to the disapproval of Jackie. The important thing to her was the Doctor's happiness and she knew he'd never be happy staying still. Plus she actually loved the life herself, the adrenaline junkie.

Ok, I love Rose, I absolutely adore her. But seriously. WE'VE ALREADY SAID GOODBYE. DO NOT PUT US THROUGH THE EMOTIONAL WRINGER AGAIN FOR THE SAKE OF ONE SCENE.
