Can someone give me a back/neck rub? That'd be SUPER.
I'm going to be an aunt soon. (As in blood relation instead of my friends' kids.) The due date is July 22, but we all know how that goes. I've yet to get them a present, but they've refused to find out the sex of the baby ahead of time. Fair's fair.
Torchwood fandom is scaring me. Flames and threats sent to the writer because what happened in COE? I guess to me there's always that line between fandom and TPTB (writers/actors/directors). Write fic, cry to fellow fans, and be depressed for months after Doomsday? Been there, done that. Fist-shake at RTD and rant at him in my journal? Did that too. But sending actual hate mail to the man? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. NONONONONONONO. NEVER EVER.
I'm actually really worried about ComicCon that's happening in, what, a couple of weeks? I could see Doctor Who and Torchwood panels being hijacked by a vengeful minority. (And I don't even want to think about if some truly unbalanced nutjob turns up.)
I don't blame people for being upset at COE. If you've been around me for any length of time, you'll know the meltdown I had after Doomsday. It actually hurt to go through that. I imagine there are some going through that with Torchwood right now. It's just when it crosses that line that it gets scary.
(Oh, and I'm not even going to touch the whole "what happened in Torchwood is Rose's fault" thing, because that's crazytalk.)
*hasn't seen Torchwood yet but can deduce from the rumblings what happened* Dude, this is a whole new level of crazy that I think is going to end very badly.
*pats* I think we all need another Fluff Fest.
For the niece/nephew to be. Also maybe a baby care package? I know in the first week, anything that saved me a trip to the grocery store (diapers, wipes, consumables like that) was GOLDEN.

Bwaha! People blaming Rose is hilarious! Oh, fandom. If anything they should kiss her feet and thank her. I mean people do realize that if Rose hadn't saved Jack then he would have died permanently at the Game station thus making Jack's Torchwood nonexistent? Which means no more sexy sexy Jack/Ianto tiems and myfawny feeding off of bbq'd cyberwomen.
You know I love you for the title of your post. All day today I've been singing to myself, "Repeat to yourself: 'It's just a show, I should really just relax.'"
Like you said, I don't blame them for feeling like they got punched in the gut. I know I did after "Doomsday." But Jeebus. talk about the show, yell about the show, don't THREATEN the people involved.
The "Itzbeen" is something I wish had been available when mine was born.
And yes, the baby care package is always welcome. Diapers, wipes, cloth diapers for use as burp cloths, baby shampoo, all of that. Even stuff for the parents like toilet paper and other little things that they'll run out of in the middle of the night because they're too tired to think straight.

*NODS*
I remember for a while a few of us were all "WE'LL STORM BBC WALES! AND...AND DO SOMETHING! DEMAND ROSE! YEAH!" But we never would actually do that, nor would we write TPTB and inform them of our crazy.
The "Itzbeen" is something I wish had been available when mine was born.
Huh. I never would have thought of something like that.

(Oh, and I'm not even going to touch the whole "what happened in Torchwood is Rose's fault" thing, because that's crazytalk.) Wait... there's a faction blaming it on Rose? Damn... Still crazy fans are crazy.
Thing is I can get why people are upset, but to me it's not all that upsetting. So be upset, yes (I can't say anything- I cried for five nights after Journey's End) but no to hate mail and threats.
I agree completely. Basically I think the only good reason to talk to a writer is to say "thanks", and maybe ask questions politely. Though I still have those dreams where I write JK Rowling's biography and she bakes me cookies... ;)
Imagine, someone that nobody is mad at,and everyone will talk to. :P
We got one 6 weeks ago, my first niece. I've even gotten to babysit a couple of times.
Satisfies that baby craving, without committing to one of my own.
We (my mom and I) grabbed an old Easter basket and went to Target to fill it with things they would need. Onesies, newborn diaper, talc, a rattle, receiving blanket, baby flannels, etc...
Torchwood fandom is being ridiculous right now, from what I've seen. And I'm appalled. These people writing these horrible things are the ones who make fandoms look bad. I thought COE was fantastic, and though I'm not happy with that certain turn of events...I'd never even dream of threatening the writers (with anything more than imaginary pitchforks) or accusing them of homophobia or whatever else they're being told right now. I may shake my fist at them or curse their names for a bit...but these people are out of line and just disgust and embarass me.
I know, right? I just... *shakes head* I thought CoE was great, but I totally get why someone wouldn't. But your favorite character being killed off is in no way a good reason for that sort of thing. I'd like to slap some sense into people, honestly.
I really do not remember ever seeing it this bad before, and I've seen a number of favorite characters get killed off. I don't know why they can't just go into Clan Denial, like they did with Richie in Highlander fandom, and write live!Ianto fic to their hearts' content.
I feel like there needs to be some sort of fannish SWAT team set up at Comicon to stop people before they do something foolish. Bleh.
(Oh, and I'm not even going to touch the whole "what happened in Torchwood is Rose's fault" thing, because that's crazytalk.)
*eyeroll* Oh, fandom.
Back rub? No?
If I weren't on the other side of the country from you... *wiggles fingers at you*

I was trying to remember if I ever saw anyone say they were plotting threats, back when Doomsday aired. I can honestly say that I don't remember anything like that, even on the most clothes-tearing locked posts.
I feel like there needs to be some sort of fannish SWAT team set up at Comicon to stop people before they do something foolish. Bleh.
No kidding.

I was never very close to Torchwood fandom, but I'm scooting farther away as we speak. Because really. That's scary, people. No matter how much you love it, it's not real and that person you are shouting at and flaming *is.*
I can empathize with TW fans, 'cos DD just about killed me and JE made me RAEG for a long time, but threatening the writers and flaming their blogs or whatever? Duuuuuuuuuuudddddesss. Not cool.
Rose destroyed the global financial markets, trufax.

Me too. (Well, not JE so much, but DD.) So I'm NOT going to say people need to get over it already, when it took me... Hell, I still avoid watching Doomsday like the plague, even though I like Ten II/Rose. It still feels like a knife-twist in the stomach just thinking about DD, and it aired years ago now!
but threatening the writers and flaming their blogs or whatever? Duuuuuuuuuuudddddesss. Not cool.
Very not cool.

Congrats on being an aunt. It's great. This unfortunately happens quite a bit in soap fandom. I don't think it is wrong to write TPTB or even the actors with your opinions about storylines or characters, in daytime they encourage you to do so, but it steps over the line very easily. The actress I do fan work for has gotten some freaky stuff over the years. I think it is more prevalent in daytime fandom because these are people who are on your screen every day. In some cases you watch them grow up. There are characters I have been watching for over twenty years, so people blur that line even more. It really is a shame.

Wow, I can only imagine! I mean, TW and DW and the like only have a sum total of hours worth of getting emotionally attached to characters. Soaps have years.
Well... when I heard that RTD was moving to LA, I wrote a letter (complete with petition signed by over 3000 imaginary friends) to the Department of Immigration informing them that we, as a nation, don't want the gleeful-cackling-I'll-make-you-cry-bwahaha-emo-monster darkening our sacred shores unless he first takes (and passes) a university level course "How Happy Ending are a Good Thing, and Other Lessons Disney Taught Us." And even then, we want him carefully watched by FBI agents specially trained in Continuity and UST Resolution. Also all scripts he may potentially pen must be pre screened by a panel of carefully selected fans.
But I'd never actually send him hate mail. Sheesh. Some people.
Yeah, I'm glad to not be much of a TW fan right now. I didn't watch CoE, therefore it didn't happen. Easy enough.
ALSO. Being an Aunt is completely brilliant, congratulations on the opportunity to completely spoil a wee person, then hand them back to their parents to deal with the consequences. This is your opportunity to exact revenge for every time your sibling wronged you growing up, in the form of noisy toys and massive quantities of sugar - both of which, coincidentally, also move you up the awesome meter in the eyes of the wee one.
But for now the previously mentioned care package idea is perfect. Have fun!
Aww! I'm super close with my aunt, so I think everyone should have one. Also, she took me to Europe this year. JUST SAYING.
I've been hearing a lot about the Torchwood melt-down. Haven't really... seen any of it. But I can imagine. Though I jokingly remarked at one point that at least it makes Doctor Who fandom seem relatively sane in comparison.

I think the difference between the "Doomsday" and the Torchwood reaction is due to perceptions of the show's future + the actors' choices.
With Rose, we knew that BP chose to leave the show, and while it broke our hearts, we accepted that. And it was an ending that had SOME hope (at least Rose was still alive).
Whereas for Torchwood, the current impression is that the writers screwed over both the actors (GDL wanted to stay) AND the fans (who were passionately invested in his character). That's why we're seeing so much anger, because it didn't HAVE to happen this way.
Yeah, it's not exactly the same thing. And I get why people are pissed off. It's just when it crosses the line of actual revenge-taking or something that I think people need to STEP BACK.
*I *could* give you a back rub but I'm just not feeling it. I'd be happy to share the name and number of my (very inexpensive) massage therapist, though. Although you'd have to drive up here. And you'd have to get her before *she* goes on maternity leave mid-August.
*How did I not know this??? July 22 is youngest niece's birthday. July 24th is the kidlet's. How can they stand the suspense of not knowing? I wouldn't get them anything yet, either!
*Have not seen COE yet. But I had a dream about bowling with John Barrowman last night. I told him he was giving gays everywhere a bad name...
A couple weeks ago I randomly wondered if your brother really was having a baby or if I'd just made that up. Hilariously, I convinced myself I'd made it up. :D
Alright, first thing's first: WHO THE FUCK IS BLAMING ROSE?!
Agreed. It's crazytalk.
Second. Torchwood broke me. Not to the same extent as Doomsday, but I'm still pretty upset about the whole damn thing. But not to the point where I'd send hate mail to Rusty. Good lord.
