Cooking fail.

This was not my weekend for cooking. First off, I made apple pie. It was mostly good except for a couple of things. One was I sliced the apples too thick. My apple slicer/corer/peeler worked great, but I should have used the smaller size twisty rod. And two, the recipe I used was way too runny, but what did gel up tasted a bit floury. Which makes sense since the thickener in the recipe was flour. And because it was soupy, the bottom of the crust was mushy. Blech. But it had a good taste - with adjustments it could be a good recipe.

And today I tried making a ham asparagus casserole. It was...not good, even though it got a high rating on allrecipes. It tasted like canned soup. I dumped it. Such a waste of food, but there was just no way I would ever eat that. Bleh.

Maybe I'll go pick up a precooked chicken or something. I can't fail at that.

I would recommend corn starch, or if you can find it, arrowroot. Arrowroot is my favorite pie thickener but it can be difficult to find, especially at a decent price.

I think I'll give that a shot next time. One of the two. I was not impressed with flour.

Also, thickness is going to depend on what kind of apple you have. Granny Smiths - very thin. Macs - pretty darn thick. And so on. I always bake until the juices start bubbling up out of the top.

I can't picture asparagus as a good casserole ingredient, with ham or anything else. I have dumped whole dishes before like that. Sad, but necessary.

I like asparagus, so I thought I'd give it a try. But...I probably should have guessed it wouldn't be good.
