Countdown to Christmas: 3

I do love this episode, but pretty much only for the Doctor and Rose moments. The rest - boring as hell. Well, I probably was interested in the story the first time I watched it, but since then it's become something I feel the strong need to fast forward through.

Anyway, the main point of the story was to accept the new guy, wasn't it? The rest was just filler.

HE LOOKS SO YOUNG! *FLAPS ARMS*

Jackie looks like she gearing up for a slap, doesn't she? Awesome. XD

Doctor: *has a ground nap*

Rose: *is NOT IMPRESSED*

Wondering what he has two of. Oh Jackie.

Trying to get Rose to himself. Oh Mickey.

*LOVES THE DW CREW*

Death by killer Christmas tree? You know, I'm starting to think RTD has Christmas issues. Really big ones. :D

Didn't someone once say this was the "passing the baton" moment?

So the apartment's coming down around them, but the thing that gets the Doctor out of his coma? Rose saying "help me" in his ear. SQUEEEEEEE!

For pretty much this whole scene everyone's focused on the Santas except Rose. Her attention stays on the Doctor. Very nice direction here - it really shows what's most important to her at the moment.

Still one of the funniest scenes in DW EVER.

Doctor: WTF?
Jackie: It's my boyfriend's.
Doctor: *is mentally composing 1000 new Jackie jokes since Jackie jokes are always funny, even while going through regneration sickness*

Awwwwwwwwww! There was that tender moment of the Doctor touching Rose's face in TPotW when she was out. Now it's switched.

And Rose doesn't answer Mickey's "you love him" question. You have to wonder what the Doctor was thinking right here. From his comment later "you gave up on me!" it seems like he was aware of things.

Rose completely loses it. It's a long road to take to get Rose (and the audience) to accept the new Doctor. But in the end it was worth it, and made it feel genuine.

Rose doesn't really have all the confidence in the world yet. But even in a moment where she feels completely useless, she still takes charge. I don't even think she realized how not useless she was being.

Doctor: Mmmmmm. Best. Pillow. EVER.
Rose: Did you say something?
Doctor: No. No. Sleeping. Shhhh.

Tea is the answer! *PINCHES EVERYONE'S BRITISH CHEEKS*

Rose is so scared but so brave at the same time. "Someone's got to be the Doctor." And I think in S2 she really did become more like the Doctor. There are many reasons I would love to follow the altverse - this is one of them. I'd love to see Rose now.

How can a person in his jammies look so smug? XD

Rose approves. :D

First things first, MUST HAVE A CONVERSATION ABOUT THE HAIR.

And then on to the geeky flirting. XD XD

I think it was Julie G in the confidential or commentary who said that the main goal of this fight was to try to win back Rose. Or something to that effect. Which you can kind of see - it seems like the Doctor is always really aware of her, and watching her, like when he's pushed back.

Like here as well. Rose barely takes a step and he's immediately shouting to her. Just...really aware of how she's reacting to things.

Bye, hand! See you again soon!

To me this was Ten's best "I am a Time Lord" moment. They've done others (like in "Voyage of the Damned"), but nothing has come close to the chills of this moment.

Just look how much the Doctor perks up once Rose lets him know she accepts him. It's like he gets his second wind. *pats*

AND THEN THERE IS CUTENESS.

And a group hug with the family! (OMG, look how happy he looks! *GAPES*)

And then there's the Harriet Jones moment. You could probably do an entire course on Harriet Jones in Doctor Who - her choices, her relationship with the Doctor, the choices he made with her and so on.

Side note: I've seen the notion floated that this moment lead to the Master trying to take over the world. Errrrnnnnn... I give you that it was very easy for the Master to get in with Harriet out of the way, but he's the Master. He would have found a way to become PM even if the Doctor hadn't done this. I'd say the Doctor made the Master's life easier, but didn't cause The Year That Never Was by taking down Harriet Jones.

THE NEW SUIT! EEEEEE!

Doctor: Do you like? (Oh please oh please oh please.)

Rose: I like.

Doctor: SQUEEEEEEEE!!

Rose: *exists*
Doctor: *is amazed*

OMG THEY ARE SO CUTE. *FLAPS ARMS AGAIN*

TOTAL "Lady and the Tramp" pushing-the-meatball-over moment!

Rose: I like your meatball. :D :D

Doctor: It is a meatball for YOU. :D :D :D

I love the Doctor's little "fantastic" line, and just how they look at each other. They're both so head over heels for each other. AWWWWWW.

Hee hee hee!

*melts*

THEY ARE. SO CUTE.

Did I mention the cute? BECAUSE I'M HAVING TROUBLE SAYING ANYTHING ELSE.

CUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUTE!

HEEE. SO CUTE.

I love this episode SO MUCH. The whole end bit is just one long adorable D/R squee from RTD, really.

Also, I tend to think Harriet Jones was lucky the Doctor laid the blame on her. If she'd still been in power when the Master came along, the best she could have hoped for was losing a job. At worst? It is the Master, after all.

TOTALLY! XD

Yeah, that's kind of my thinking on the matter. Not that she should have been kissing the Doctor's feet for doing it, but this way she wound up helping to take down the Daleks. The other way... Who knows?

This should be in the list of classic lines from Doctor Who: "I'm going to be killed by a Christmas tree!!!!" Oh Jackie. You are priceless. I really love Rose's family.

This episode is about the cute! Russell T Davies' writing for Doctor Who has the tendency to be dark, but dang it! He knows just how to suck you in with the cute!!! But the foreshadowing of what the Doctor could become is definitely there... with the satsuma.

Oh, definitely. Looking back on it all now, the darkness was always there. It just got overshadowed by Rose's presence.

I watched this ep only after Fear Her so I already was quite fond of Ten (though still doubting whom I like most) but he'd definitely win me with this one, he was kind of impressive XDD

I agree, I so keep missing Doctor through the whole episode.

Aww, Ten and Rose are my favourite. :D

Aww! Yeah, I bet there were like 1000 other easier options and he chose none of them because they wouldn't be as impressive looking. XD

Oh, totally! "Well, I could just send them away, but OOOH! SWORD FIGHT FOR THE PLANET!"

[identity profile] wotcher-wombat.livejournal.com 2009-12-23 12:23 am (UTC)(link)

Because I watched the show on sketchy online places, I couldn't get access to this episode until after I watched most of season 3. (You want to talk about jarring? Go from Parting of the Ways to New Earth, and then Family of Blood to Christmas Invasion! It'll give you emotional whiplash.) It was so nice to see Rose mourn Nine. That's what this show does so well--it never takes the cheap route with emotion.

And this episode has SO MUCH WIN! I never thought of the swordfight as a way to win Rose, but it does make a lot of sense. Best of all, though, is that big hug with Jackie and Mickey and Rose followed by the only really happy Christmas on the show.

Also? THERE'S A TREE-SHAPED HOLE IN THE WALL! I wonder what Jackie told the contractor to fix it, lol. "Well, there was an accident with the tree trying to kill us and.... I mean, er, Mickey went crazy with a chain saw. Yep, that's what happened. Tell the man, Mickey!"

And possibly my favorite bit of win: "From the day the arrive on the planet, and blinking step into the sun, there is more to see than can ever be seen, more to do than can ever be done!" *huggles Ten*

That would be emotional whiplash! Yikes!

But yeah - RTD can be way into the sparkly crack, but the man completely understands his characters when it comes to emotions.

And this episode has SO MUCH WIN! I never thought of the swordfight as a way to win Rose, but it does make a lot of sense.

I don't think I would have thought of it either if they hadn't said it.

Best of all, though, is that big hug with Jackie and Mickey and Rose followed by the only really happy Christmas on the show.

And then Christmases became death and angst and despair. *shakes fist*

*snorts* So perfectly him. :D
