Well, it makes sense in that the natives were dark haired and the invaders were fair or ginger--so it was an easy way to see who the bad guy was or who was a descendant of the bad guys.

I don't know what the gist of all the anti-ginger jokes are over there, but it would also make sense to me that, were this the root, they would tend to paint redheads as dumb and brutish. I'm totally guessing on that one, though.

In an aside--given the stereotypes of redheads as fiery and unpredictable, can you even imagine what the last three years would have been like had Ten actually been ginger? OMG. Thank Rassilon for small favors.
