I've never really been into the slash scene, but I found these posts interesting. Here and here. Well, the second post really has nothing to do with slash, but rather using the "I have a gay friend" thing to win an argument. This is one of those topics where I don't say or comment much about since I don't feel I have any insight, and so on. But I can recognize an intelligent essay when I see it.

In other news, I'm feeling a bit meh today. I tried to read a fic that was rec'd to me, but I just didn't feel like reading. You know it's bad when I'm more interested in trying to find out if those dishwashing cubes work better than liquid. And, you know, read reviews about them. On multiple sites. This is just sad.

LOL at 'gay whisperer'. XD

To give my Thoughts On Torchwood (hopefully briefly), I can sort of understand some of the criticism at Ianto's death from that perspective. The fact that it happened isn't problematic, it's just the fact that in TV as a whole there are very few examples of homosexuality, so killing off one is Not Good. Of course, TW and DW tend to be fairly gay-friendly compared to the rest of TV.

'Course, I haven't had any slash ships, in the sense that I've written fic about them, for several years now. ... Although possibly making the Doctor a woman counts. XD

Oh, and *SQUISHES*

AT LEAST YOUR DISHWASHER WILL BE HAPPY, RIGHT?

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-01-15 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Hopefully it'll be happy!

[identity profile] shinyopals.livejournal.com 2010-01-15 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe it'll make special friends with the fridge? XD

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-01-15 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
The fridge wants nothing to do with anyone.

[identity profile] shinyopals.livejournal.com 2010-01-15 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Microwave, then? XD

I chuckled at that.

I could understand disappointment in that regard. But calling RTD homophobic is something else.

Aww, I like woman!Doctor/Rose! :D

[identity profile] shinyopals.livejournal.com 2010-01-15 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's necessarily unfair to say that there may be some internalised homophobia coming into play in some of RTD's writing - being gay doesn't get you out of that no more than being a woman gets you out of internalised sexism - but it seems a lot of the fannish reaction was ship related. Many people (at least, from what I saw) were exploding and accusing him of being a homophobe not because they'd examined the script(s) and considered the social implications, but because their ship went wrong.

And, you know, getting pissy because someone's mucked up your ship is totally valid. I freely admit that my dislike for Moffat stemmed from what he did to D/R. Take out GitF and I might never have looked twice at his work. But it's the people who were accusing RTD of homophobia because he broke up their pretty ship as opposed to considering things once the anger/upset had gone away that annoy(ed) me!

I'm no expert here but I saw no hints of homophobia when it came to the 'ending' of Jack/Ianto.

IT'S IMPORTANT TO KNOW WHAT YOUR DISHWATER MACHINE LIKES!

I think I could see being disappointed that a rare gay character was killed off, but I kinda don't think RTD killed him off because he was gay.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2010-01-16 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Jack's immortal angst is such an obvious parallel to the Doctor's that it surprises me that people were surprised that Jack and Ianto didn't, like, wander off into the sunset. Jack may be more open to getting into relationships despite their innevitable expiry date than the Doctor is, but they still... have an expiry date. To me Ianto dying horribly was more an innevitable outcome of the mortal/immortal relationship (and on a darker show, too -- people can bitch about it all they want but the fact is that Doctor Who is a family show and Torchwood isn't, so on Torchwood the gloves can come off and people die for real instead of metaphorically) rather than some kind of stance against gay relationships.

But what really perplexed me was the apparent outrage over that... one character, Clide or something, (the one who smelled Gwen and told her she was pregnant? ...CAN HE SMELL TIME LORD TOO? Anway), who made homophobic remarks. Oh, and I guess Ianto's sister and her husband did too? But I mean, it's not like those moments were touted as TRUE and RIGHT. They were obviously meant to be offensive. An author doesn't have to agree with everything their characters say.

:D Hee, so do I.

I kind of want to write some more at some point, and not just because I like having a romantic lead who doesn't make me think "ew... hairy nipples!" ;-)

YOU DO REALISE BY SCROLLING DOWN SLOWLY, 9 TIMES OUT OF 10 I CAN AVOID THE TRAUMA, RIGHT?

It's a technique you learn when you're a David Tennant fan. And it leads in well to the "slap your hand over the screen and hit spacebar until you see text" technique.

I FIGURED THE TITLE ALONE WAS ENOUGH OF A WARNING. XD

I TORTURE OUT OF LOVE. ♥

I first read "waxing" instead of "warning," which inspired things like "Ten II" and "naked mole rat" in my mind.

I read those yesterday.. Very eloquent. I'm like you, I don't feel I have much I can say about the topic but that was definitely an interesting thing to read and absorb.

And to tell you how little of a life I have, I can tell you the cubes work great when they work. I have to be careful with our dishwasher because if the edges poke out, or anything sort-of-maybe blocks the dispenser lid, it gets stuck and you end up having to run it again. Despite that, I love them. It saves me so much hassle and ends up saving money since I'm not using as much detergent.

Ooooh! So you have to put them in the little compartment that you close? Where does the cube go in the beginning?

[identity profile] ivydoor.livejournal.com 2010-01-15 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I only use one. I put one in the little compartment then run the dishwasher. I've never had to use more than one in a load, unless it's a redo like I mentioned.

Just make sure you keep them in a
really
dry place. And check them before you buy. If you see any liquid loose in the package, they're useless. Once they get stuck together, it's impossible to pull them apart without tearing.

Thanks for the tip!

That second one is really great (I didn't read the first one because I don't really like slash). I have met multitudes of people who are like "my black friends don't care if I say n*****!" and won't listen when you tell them all black people are not the same/your friend.

Also I am jealous of anyone who has a dishwasher >:|

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-01-15 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, like he said, that's not a pass to the Gay Kingdom. (Or any other minority group.)

*pats my dishwasher*

[identity profile] vegmb.livejournal.com 2010-01-15 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
You read reviews on them...so now I'm curious what others think. Are the cubes better than the liquid?

I was also not into reading fic today, even in my new obsessive fandom. I'm just counting down to yoga in an hour...

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-01-15 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
For the most part people seemed to like them. A few people had problems with them, but overall it got good reviews.

I'm counting down to end of work in...3 hours yet? Wah.

Edit: No, wait. Only 2. I suck at finger counting. XD

I use the liquid filled pouch things, and they seem to work rather well. I am using a generic now that works better than the name brand stuff did. [shrug] (It is also easy so my kids are more likely to do it.)

LOL. I have 20 mins until I am off of work, 55 until yoga starts. (Yay for Central Time.)

I LOVE the dishwashing cube things, mainly because I using them means I don't have to think about detergent amount. And I haven't had any problems with them, but I also don't use my dishwasher often; I mainly just wash things by hand right after I use them.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-01-15 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I'm going to need to do a trial run. Maybe get a small bag first instead of the giant tub from Costco.
