(no subject)

  • I flipped past Curling last night and watched a couple of minutes. I now want Mythbusters to do a study because I totally do not believe that those brooms do a damn thing. (You think I'm kidding, but I'm NOT.)

  • I really enjoyed Lost last night! No spoilers, but it was the first time this season that I've actually been intrigued.

  • I had a rant about fandom and Rose and how it's obviously okay to singly exclude her from "women rock" kinds of things, but...it just makes me tired. And DW fandom will never change, inserting whatever excuse sounds like good justification. Thumbs up, fellow female fans. (And just as a warning, I've no desire to get into big discussions about it here. Did I mention the tired? Seriously.)

[Inserts srs business UR RONG discussion here]

*Flops*

And if a butterly flapping its wings in China can cause a storm, I'm sure curling brooms can... yeah, I got nothing.

Omg Canada did a study on the broom thing for their ~own the podium~ technique. I... forget what the study is. They don't melt the ice, but they do... ....do... something idk what.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-02-24 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
It's the first time I've actually paid attention to curling, and...I'm highly skeptical.

There's some discussion of curling sweeping here: http://ask.metafilter.com/146458/Does-sweeping-in-curling-achieve-anything

It would be difficult to replicate a perfectly consistent shot (and perfectly consistent sweeping) for analysis, but I don't find it hard to buy that sweeping does have some effect. http://www.jssm.org/vol8/n4/1/v8n4-1text.php is the closest you'll find to a scientific take on it, I think.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2010-02-24 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I read it in a Washington Post article (the tone of which was a highly condescending "???????????????????????? CANADIANS ARE COMPETITIVE??????") but I've read so many articles that talked about Own the Podium I couldn't tell you for sure. But I loled. OH CURLING.

[identity profile] principia-coh.livejournal.com 2010-02-24 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I think for certain conditions of ice the sweeping does have an effect, but how pronounced that effect is in modern indoor curling facilities I also doubt.

Both Rose and Gwen come under fire for an excess of hate from the fandoms. But since any attempt to involve either of them in any sort of woman-positive discussion tends to turn into getting screeched at by people who only get crazier...

...it's not worth it. I blame the degenerating tenor of public discourse over the past decade or so for a lot of it, to be honest. Being demonstrably, factually correct no longer seems to be relevant to many people.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-02-24 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I love that in the first link everyone seems to have a True Fact opinion, but they contradict each other. :D

I didn't know that they made a lane surface a bit rough intentionally though - doing that spraying thing. That then would make sense that the brooms can do something.

LOL CURLING LOL

Er, I've been trying to watch it? My friend from the Maritimes really likes it, but I don't think his opinion counts since he called it more "badass" than skeleton. Whatever.

OMG, that pic is fab!

(Michelle, that's me in the pic, y'know. *g*)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-02-24 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
That picture! XD XD XD *LOVES*

And I agree about discussion. Seems like the only thing that really matters is how good you can slam the other person. Forget trying to have a discussion. (And people wonder why government can't get anything done.)

BWAH!!!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-02-24 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
It's sort of like really slow skee-ball...

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-02-24 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
After reading the links by [livejournal.com profile] platypus, I'm more willing to accept that the brooms might do something. Possibly... :D

COULD YOU HAVE DONE BETTER?

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2010-02-24 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I like that the ice is apparently flawed intentionally. I BET VANOC DID A WONDERFUL JOB THEN! (lol like all of our ice venues have been bad for some inexplicable reason)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-02-24 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I wonder how they tell if something is flawed enough...

[identity profile] goldy-dollar.livejournal.com 2010-02-24 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
With really baffling rules. Canada is kicking ass, though! Yay?

There's actually a prof at Western who is doing that study. It's all very hush-hush, because his money comes from the Canadian Curling Federation, and they want our athletes to get any benefits first...but brooms don't melt the ice as much as they thought. It does make a significant difference in the curl, however.

Curling is awesome. The rocks defy the normal laws of physics (they curve differently when they spin than similar objects to). Awesome.

*sigh*

Yes.

[identity profile] rattus-aerius.livejournal.com 2010-02-24 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I just wish I could actually see some curling. Stupid NBC.

[identity profile] erateini.livejournal.com 2010-02-24 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
*Pats curling*

I just love how the sweepers go all intense and fierce when sweeping. For them it's all srs bsns and for me just fun to watch! XD

[identity profile] fiona-conn.livejournal.com 2010-02-24 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
*laugh* Allegedly, the brooms help to smoothe over the ice, thus making the curling stone move further.

(Curling is our national sport, here in Scotland. That, and Rugby. And what you silly Yanks call "soccer".)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-02-24 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Are they? Good job!
