HPpalooza

I'm a little over halfway through The Order of the Phoenix.

  • OMG, EVERYONE IS PMS-ING IN CAPS LOCK. I was warned about Harry, but everyone seems especially pissy. Like they all need Midol...oralius.

  • You don't fuck with Hermione. You just don't. About anything. I love that. :D

  • As fandom has made me way more interested in Ginny than I would have been otherwise, I'm happy she finally getting some characterization. (Seriously, if I hadn't been mildly aware of HP ship wars, I'm sure I wouldn't have paid the character too much attention before now.)

  • Oh, young love. Do you like me? I mean like me like me? XD And the classic:

Hermione: *explains exactly what's going on in a girl's head*

    Ron: WTFH?

    Harry: *stares blankly*

Hermione: *does not zap them just for the hell of it*

lol you SERIOUSLY don't fuck with Hermione. It's actually pretty amazing. Rock on, Hermione.

She totally is! I'm pretty sure she's my favorite character now. :D

My problem with this book is that it encompasses all three of the things I hate in fiction:

1. Evil wins because Good is stupid (and won't talk to one another).
2. Teenage whinging.
3. Self-righteous bad guys who are "right" because they are "right".

That said, I do rather love Hermione, Ginny and the twins. And Luna, obviously. Everyone else I'd kind of like to stuff in a closet.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-07-26 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
XD XD Haven't finished it yet, but YES. This book is very melodramatic.

And Luna is a fun comic relief. :D

LOL yeah. Like even the characters who aren't teenagers are acting like teenagers.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-07-26 02:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Totally! Everyone's biting each other's heads off. XD

Hee. I remember thinking the exact same thing when I read it for the first time... 'Boy, people are being bitchy in this one'.

You can't say that! I made a joke about PMS once and got my head bit off.

Your poor head!

You have such super cute icons (although I have to admit that I'm not sure I entire get the gator one)!

I'm rather partial to CapsLock!Harry. When Book 5 came out, I was recovering from surgery, so my sister and some of my med school friends read it aloud to me. I can still recall my sister's spot-on "Hem hem" that she'd provide. I got all enraged with Harry when I was listening too.

Ginny: ditto. I thought it was great that we had fleshing out of some secondary characters, and I loved the introduction of Luna, so I didn't think Anything Significant about learning more about Ginny. In fact, the summer after Book 5 was released, JKR would update her website with all of these cool random facts about people that didn't get worked into the story. Like Dean's backstory. She posted some little stuff about Ginny, like her full name, and the fact that she was the first girl in 7 generations and she was the youngest of 7 and the fact that she had been possessed was supposed to mean something. I know I read a lot of Ginny centered fanfic that summer! It was one of the reasons that I was soo diasppointed in Book 6 (my least favorite, I think), because all of that potential just fizzled.

And I love Hermione. Honestly, Hermione should have ended up with Krum, who at least admired her brains and fortitude.

In contrast to....?

Ron? I think Ron admired her brains. He knew she was smart and he was impressed with how clever she was. He just also calls her out on her less attractive qualities.

XD Thanks! I went on an icon hunt recently. And the Gator one is a takeoff of the meme going around of "haters gonna hate."

:D

And it's cool she gave out some more facts on people. That kind of stuff is always fun.

I forgot to mention Hermione and Krum when I posted about GoF - I meant to. In the movie I thought the two of them together was beyond strange, but in the book I thought it was sweet.

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2010-07-26 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
I simultaneously love and hate this book. Like, I love it because IT IS TOTALLY HOW 15 YEAR OLDS ARE. They're pissy and stupid and self-centered and oblivious. At the same time, it gets really frustrating.

And IA. I love Hermione. She isn't perfect and she has flaws, but she's such a lovable and relatable character.

I just find Ginny extremely dull and lacking in depth, but that's not her fault, exactly. The books are told from Harry's POV, and he's not really all that concern with Ginny through out PoA and GoF, so she kind of disappears and then all of a sudden she's this awesome! perfect! talented! person and we didn't get to see that transformation.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-07-26 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, like you said, it's probably fairly good at capturing that age but it's not always fun to read. :D

And yeah, that's the problem with one POV in this series. People come and go out of Harry's focus so you're never seeing the big picture.

[identity profile] selenityshiroi.livejournal.com 2010-07-26 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
I told you, this book is retitled Harry Potter and the Teenaged Angst.

The next book is where Harry attempts to set the record as the most emo teen ever recorded in fiction.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-07-26 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man. Hopefully there won't be too many posts of "DIE, HARRY!" coming up. XD

[identity profile] selenityshiroi.livejournal.com 2010-07-26 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
The sixth book took me twice as long to read because I keep getting frustrated by emo!Harry.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-07-26 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh dear. :D

[identity profile] magali29.livejournal.com 2010-07-26 07:51 am (UTC)(link)
Ouah, this was the last book where I liked Ginny. She was a normal girl there, before going the Mary Sue route in the last two books. Luna rocks. Luna and Neville ended up being my two favorite characters in Harry Potter (doesn't mean that I ship them, just that they are, separately, my favorite characters in the HPverse), while I started as a Harry and Ginny fan.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-07-26 02:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Awww, poor Ginny! And while I don't care much about Neville yet, I'm finding Luna to be fun.

[identity profile] jabberwockpie.livejournal.com 2010-07-26 11:09 am (UTC)(link)
Luna is my all time favorite.

Capslock Harry always reminds me of

I guess that says something about how my mind works.

My friend and I have whole conversations about how Hermione is the actual hero the whole time and constantly saves Harry when he's busy having headaches and passing out and stuff. And then Harry wakes up and Hermione's like "Oh Harry, you were so brave, here, have a lollipop."

I...could get on that bandwagon. :D

[identity profile] typbrunette.livejournal.com 2010-07-26 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha yes! It's not that Harry's not lovely and heroic in his own right, he's just more like the every day guy thrown into a bad situation and handling it heroically, where as Hermione is actually bad ass and does all the magical running and jumping and roundhouse kicks. Often using books.

Agreed!

[identity profile] leighleighla.livejournal.com 2010-07-26 02:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh. Harry in book five. I get the feeling that everyone is Capslock PMSing as a result of Harry doing it.

I had a bad experience with book five. I have a tendency to flip ahead in a book when I get it instead of reading from the beginning, and I came across one of the big shocks and it kind of ruined it for me.

My parents were terrified when I screamed bloody murder.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-07-26 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Whoops! :D It would be tempting to know though. Since I've seen the movies and know basically what happens, there's no temptation.

[identity profile] leighleighla.livejournal.com 2010-07-26 03:15 pm (UTC)(link)
BTW: once you're done with all the books, do yourself a favor and watch A Very Potter Musical and a Very Potter Sequel on youtube. It's Harry Potter: The musical comedy with lots of meta and wonderfulness. :)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-07-26 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been hearing about those!
