  • Still on my mystery kick, I felt like saying (probably again) that Mrs. Oliver makes Poirot 100x awesomer. XD The more Zoe Wanamaker can join the cast, the better. Mrs. Oliver is the perfect snarky, slightly scattered, foil for Poirot.

  • Out of viewing material mystery-wise, I watched a Jeremy Brett episode of Sherlock Holmes. It only confirmed my notion that Sherlock Holmes is okay, but I really am not interested in that character much at all. The whole mythology just doesn't appeal to me. (It's a bit like Superman in that way - doesn't matter much who plays the roles or writes it - I just can't get excited about that story.)

  • DW-related, all I can say about that DT Rex clip is it's probably a very good thing the show got trashed. D: (Oh, the comments on youtube. No. Just no.)

I LOVE watching Poirot on Masterpiece Mystery and it's a zillion times better when Mrs. Oliver shows up. I just adore how completely not like Poirot she is and how that makes them just lovely to watch together. Plus since she's Zoe Wannamaker it helps when playing Doctor Who Bingo.

It's scary how many people I recognize nowadays. Although sometimes I swear someone looks familiar but it turns out I've never seen anything they've been in. :D

I <3 <3 <3 <3 Mrs. Oliver SO MUCH.

She is AWESOME!! She's the perfect kind of snarky: she's not doing it to be amusing. :D

I think it was Kali who called it a mercy kill. XD XD

Very apt. XD

Hard to judge from a little clip but the snippet didn't catch my attention as far as an interesting story. But his accent was very very good. I would not have recognized his voice.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-08-16 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
The accent a "no, don't do that. really, don't." XD

And it is really hard to judge from a little snip, but I wasn't impressed with anything in it - characters, writing, acting...

I saw someone say that perhaps DT was focusing too much on the accent which killed the character. I think that's a possibility - I've seen snips of him in various things from comedy to drama, and I've never seen his acting so flat.

I agree there was no spark from that scene that showed any interesting character. But I thought it was a pretty good Chicago accent. One of my profs was from Chicago and it was darn close to his voice (he looked a bit like him, too).

I found the premise of the series kinda stupid. Not sure where you can really go with that- although you could do a Nero Wolfe sort of thing (Wolfe sent Archie out to do the work-- he rarely went out-- but Archie was the main character, not Nero). I don't think the chick was bad, but her character wasn't interesting enough to carry the show, either. Maybe other scenes would prove me wrong, but the premise sounded like a bad "Monk" knock off.

Really? To me it sounded like when they get Brit actors to play Americans on Spooks. Some of them pull it off, but others... *shudders*

Yeah, I think they were probably going the Monk route.

I just had my husband listen to the clip, and asked him "whose voice is that?" he had no idea. Then I told him to look at the screen and he actually startled. He thought it was an American. I really think it's pretty good (the accent, not the show).

And my daughter said "Dorothy Sayers" when I asked her to make a mystery recommendation for you. "Any Dorothy Sayers" I think those were already on your list, though, no?

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-08-16 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I've got the books and the DVDs of the Dorothy Sayers stuff. Love it!

Ooh, Zoe Wanamaker plays Ariadne Oliver? I feel like I need to watch some more of these.

And Holmes is a very different type of detective - both in terms of style of mystery and character himself - than a lot of the others.

Lol DT.

She's not in very many of them, but when she makes an appearance it's GREAT. :D

And I just can't get into that whole "ultra genius but disengaged" thing. (Hmmm. That could be why I like incarnations of the Doctor that are a bit more...engaged. Or maybe I simply don't like Four very much. XD)

Lol DT.

*pats*

I kind of liked Mrs Oliver in the books, so I really should look for the episodes/films with her.

I liked the RDJ Sherlock Holmes movie, but he wasn't particularly emotionally distant in that one, he was just kind of cool. And I like the Mary Russell books quite a bit since he seems more like a real bloke in those, too.

I think I agree in part, though: to really love a character there has to be something human about them. I can adore douchebag characters (which Holmes is), but they have to be sympathetic too.

*nods* That's it exactly.

lol I finished Sherlock last night and while I liked it/have no strong feelings either way re: the entire mythology, at one point I realized Sherlock reminded me of Sheldon Cooper and I was horrified.

I still have never managed to watch that show.

"Nerdy guy gets the hot hot girl" is one trope I'm not fond of. Has it ever been the reverse? Without first transforming the girl, I mean?

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2010-08-16 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it has been ever in the history of the world, or if it has been I don't know about it. It drives me crazy too and is just one of many reasons I flounced so hard from that show. I will spare you all me doing the 30 Day TV Meme but if I did, "Big Bang Theory" wold be what I would put for "show you cannot stand".

[identity profile] mornea.livejournal.com 2010-08-16 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I *loved* Sherlock! We all crowd around the computer to watch it.

RE: I.

OMG YES. When I saw that picture, I just squeeed. I love Poirot and Mrs. Oliver together. And the fact that she is Cassandra from DW and Professor Hooch from HP makes me giggle a lot. I love them so much.

I'm pretty sure if I have a girl, I'm going to name her Ariadne. And people will be like, "Ooh because of Inception?" And I'll be like, "NO YOU POORLY READ IMBECILE, because of Agatha Christie's doppleganger character, Ariadne Oliver."

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-08-17 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
HEE!!

I've heard she's a pill in real life, but I don't think I really care. Her characters are mostly awesome. :D
