So I saw this adorable crocheted octopus and thought, "I should make an adorable crocheted octopus! Sure I have no idea how to crochet, but pfffffft."

"And after you're done, yours should look like the picture on page 7."
YES. TELL ME MORE LIES.

IT'S ALMOST AN OCTOPUS.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-08-26 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
NEARLY.

Aww! It looks like an earwig. :D

HAAAAA!

I suck at crocheting anything that isn't a giant granny square.

All it needs is a little stuffing?

[identity profile] diavestra.livejournal.com 2010-08-26 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
And more legs...

[identity profile] mylittlepwny.livejournal.com 2010-08-26 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
IT'S 1/8TH OF AN OCTOPUS. THAT'S SO CLOSE, BB.

Oh look.. you made a palmetto bug! (Polite southern term for giant flying cockroach!) UNRAVEL IT NOW BEFORE IT MULTIPLIES!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-08-26 02:01 pm (UTC)(link)
EEEEK!

[identity profile] elirrina.livejournal.com 2010-08-26 12:02 pm (UTC)(link)
You'll get there!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-08-26 02:01 pm (UTC)(link)
It is kind of soothing to do, even if I can't quite do it. :D

[identity profile] audrich.livejournal.com 2010-08-26 12:09 pm (UTC)(link)
That's definitely a leg.. possibly two.. I can see a dog, actually.. a flat, two legged dog... ahhhhh... this isn't helping, right?

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-08-26 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
It could be a flat two legged dog!

I see dangling yarn. Clearly, those are tentacles! You're close. *nods* Very close.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-08-26 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! REALLY close! XD

[identity profile] vegmb.livejournal.com 2010-08-26 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
It is relaxing. If that was your first effort, you did very well! My mother taught me when I was 5. I've tried to teach several people, and only had luck with my younger sister. (My mom apparently used up all her patience teaching me.)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-08-26 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I've decided I should be working with thinner yarn to start out with. It's just so thick and clunky to work with.

[identity profile] vegmb.livejournal.com 2010-08-26 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe you could try sport weight/baby yarn. The results will be smaller with the same number of stiches, but it might be easier to use. And if you can manage to make a circle or ball, you could do simple chains for legs to make your octopus.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-08-26 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooooooooh!

[identity profile] maypanic.livejournal.com 2010-08-26 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, that's the best crocheted dehydrated octopus I've ever seen!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-08-26 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Next: dehydrated ball!

[identity profile] spellweaver731.livejournal.com 2010-08-26 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
crochetting is lots of fun! You'll get better and real quick. It's easy once you learn the basics. I need to post pics of my octopotomus.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-08-26 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Octopotomus? Sounds AWESOME. :D

[personal profile] shaela 2010-08-26 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
But did you have a good time? If you liked making the loops and all that, maybe you could start with a simpler project. If you didn’t… well, maybe you could try knitting? (When I was learning to cross-stitch, I didn’t start with Teresa Wentzler.)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-08-26 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually did enjoy doing it! It was relaxing!

[personal profile] shaela 2010-08-26 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay! (That’s what I love about cross-stitch, too. It relaxes me.)

[identity profile] nicachick007.livejournal.com 2010-08-27 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yay look at you! It's like... a ninth of a octopus. Cuz it's not an eighth because you have to count the body. But it's a little short for a leg... is it half a leg? Then it's 1/17 of a octopus.

Sorry. Math class is eating my brain now.

[identity profile] nicachick007.livejournal.com 2010-08-27 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
I just realized that someone else commented earlier saying it's an 1/8... I still hold my math is more sound.

I was also going to say that that looks a lot more like knitting than I've seen other crotchet look, and as far as I know, knitting is easier. And I'm sure there are knit octopus patterns out there. And Miss Marple does it. So you should look into that. :D I know I do!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-08-27 01:26 pm (UTC)(link)
BWAH!!
