  • I kind of wish I still worked in downtown SD. I could be watching the spam eaters come in.

  • Bank holiday today, which means light traffic. WOO! (Randomly - I think there's a disconnect between today in the U.S. and today in other countries. I think our Memorial Day in May is probably more similar. Today for us is more about living than remembering the fallen. At least in my mind.)

  • RTD came out a few days ago saying that the new Torchwood would be disturbing. And I'm sure that after he said that he cackled with glee. XD

  • I held a parrot yesterday. It was such a sweet thing.

Heh. My friend's dad was on that cruise ship because he manages magic acts and does magic himself so he was doing something related to that on the ship. He does NOT do well with roughing it, so I can only imagine how miserable he was with no power.

I AM EXCITE. Omg. I only sort of liked Torchwood throughout series 1 and 2, but with how disturing CoE was, I was in love. I love that creepy stuff. I think it's brilliant. My hopes for the new series are now way too high. When does it premiere???

That would SUCK.

I think they start filming early next year so...no idea when it'll air. :D But I thought CoE was hard-core sci-fi, the likes of which we don't see very often. I'm looking forward to what he'll do next.

It's really weird because November is, in my mind, the month of death. It seems like November has a lot of deaths in it, and I'm pretty sure the Catholic Church focuses on remembering those who have passed away.
Still, I think you're right- it seems like there's this disconnect between the way the U.S. views November 11th and the way Canada (and other countries) view it.

LOL, oh Russell, never change.

For me it's a month of turkey and my birthday. :D

[identity profile] janetmaca.livejournal.com 2010-11-11 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
In my family there are two deaths (well three if you count my kitten, I do, but some might not) and two birthdays in this month alone. We had turkey (well they had chicken and I had fake chicken) in October- I think Americans are onto something having such a positive holiday in November, though I do recognize that Thanksgiving coincides with harvest times.

Also, your icon made me go "hee!" out loud. Clearly I do not have issues!

RTD writing something dark?? SURELY YOU JEST.

lol, Torchwood. At this point I'm sort of more interested in watching the pre-emptive fandom implosion than I am in the show itself. I think it's pretty much too late for me to care about Gwen or Jack, but maybe Rex and Esther (lol) will dazzle me.

[identity profile] janetmaca.livejournal.com 2010-11-11 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww poor Gwen. Still, if the actress from Greek lands the role of Esther I will be a happy fangirl. :D

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2010-11-11 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I liked RTDGwen a lot more than ChibnallGwen, which isn't really a surprise, but I still think it'll be hard for me to be terribly invested in her after 2 seasons of "w/e".

I am not familiar with her! If Chad Michael Murray gets Rex I will laugh and laugh and laugh, though I heard Starz has decided they are ~not interested~ in him or the Dollhouse guy.

[identity profile] janetmaca.livejournal.com 2010-11-11 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Well Greek is... fluffy with not such great acting (though there are flashes of goodness in there) so the actress would be right at home. Amber Stevens was in the running for Esther around the same time CMM and Dollhouse guy's names were dropped for Rex. She's the one in green. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XEwsehJYHfg

Dammit, forgot the first part of your reply. I feel like I need to rewatch Torchwood so I can compare the writing, but a)you're making Chibnall look scarier than Moffat and b)I really don't think I can sit through Meat again. :(

lol I dislike Chibnall's writing (IDK what he is like as a person) waaaay more than I dislike Moffat's writing. At least with Moffat I can appreciate that he has strengths, even if I would rather his strengths were in other areas. With Chibnall I feel like I'm getting all of the crack RTD-style plot with none of the good characterization.

[identity profile] janetmaca.livejournal.com 2010-11-12 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
He didn't write Meat and that...pretty pushes him up in my book. Honestly I don't mind cracky without good characterization once in a while, but it would be nice if he threw in good characterization once in a blue moon.

Yeah, I think there's probably a pretty apt comparison between Remembrance Day and Memorial Day. When we moved to the U.S. when I was a kid, I remember being really sad to find out no one wore poppies in November. XD

[personal profile] captaintish 2010-11-11 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Do they wear them all month long?

[identity profile] goldy-dollar.livejournal.com 2010-11-11 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
It's more of a personal thing than any regulated national thing, but I'd say on average the poppies start noticeably popping up about 1 - 2 weeks before November 11 and usually last for a few more days after it.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-11-11 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
The first time I ever heard of the poppy thing was on Doctor Who. :D

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2010-11-11 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
British poppies look a bit funny to me because they are made out of paper or something? Canadian poppies are fuzzy.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2010-11-11 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah when I first learned America doesn't do the poppy thing I was startled. I kind of think they're pretty? Which is not the point but you know. Still.

I held a parrot yesterday. It was such a sweet thing.

Friend of mine has one. Problem is, she also had three kids. Every time she walks out of the kitchen/dining room, the parrot's main living area, it screams "MOM? MOM? MOOOOOOOM!"

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-11-11 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
BWAH!!!!

[identity profile] maypanic.livejournal.com 2010-11-11 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm allergic to pork and shellfish, so apparently on that cruise I would be living solely on poptarts. As long as they had the mythical pumpkin poptarts, I could deal with that. XD

But I'm really disturbed by this quote "Some passengers carried food to others who used walkers and canes and couldn't climb up nine decks of stairs to reach the food lines"
Really? The crew couldn't be bothered to take food to disabled passengers? Egad.

Wait wait wait, RT claims to be writing something disturbing? That is shocking. Never would've guessed it. That's like you claiming you're going to write fluff and then maybe post an adorable picspam. Everyone would be shocked at such an unprecedented turn of events.

Pumpkin poptarts???

Yikes! Maybe it was in addition to crew already doing it? I imagine everything got stretched really thin when people couldn't move easily around the ship anymore.

They would, wouldn't they? XD

Pumpkin poptarts???
Supposedly, they are a seasonal variety. But I've checked 10 different stores so far and while some have as many as 17 different flavors, none have those. I live in hope.

Hopefully. I mean, with the lack of electricity the poolboys couldn't clean the pool, the casino people couldn't do their jobs, the performers couldn't perform, etc - you'd think some of them could carry food to the disabled rather than leaving it up to other passengers.

CoE was fantastic, so I definitely hope that the new Torchwood is disturbing, too. Genuine creepy sci-fi-ness worked well with that set-up.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-11-11 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
A lot of sci-fi is fairly homogenized these days. It was interesting to see something so genuinely dark. And I'm not talking about blood and guts kind of dark.

Torchwood will be disturbing? More so than a dinosaur attacking a robot lady covered in sauce?

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-11-11 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
EVEN MORE. XD

[identity profile] miiro.livejournal.com 2010-11-11 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Torchwood... disturbing?

Isn't that why we watched it in the first place? Oh, or does he mean more so than usual, lol?

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2010-11-11 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure what he means. XD
