I was amused when reading We'll Always Have Parrots to find fannish shenanigans. I was smirking when actors were explaining to a police detective what slash was. Also when a couple of the actors were amusing themselves with an oral reading of badfic, while the screenwriter and another actor were having "eeeeek!" moments.

It would not surprise me AT ALL if the author started life in fandom. :D

:D It's a bit more amuzing in fiction.

It is! I had to re-read a section. "Are they really talking about slash?" XD

That's so awesome. :D

LOL

I, on the other hand, am trying to work out how I would feel if I read that in a book. I think it would be too fourth-wall-y for me. It is hard to say without encountering it myself but reading the description I am left going "what".

[identity profile] janetmaca.livejournal.com 2010-11-15 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
DAMMIT! I meant "amusing" the bleeding "z" is too close to the "s" on the keyboard.

I don't know, I don't mind the fourth wall being broken, but it has to be done well.

A lot of times that kind of stuff makes me cringe, but this just amused me. :D

You're probably right. I was also very amused by the 'dramatic reading' scene.

She obviously has a decent grasp of fandom in general and cons in particular. She also seems to be fond for her fictional fandom.

Sharyn McCrumb wrote a novel set at a SF convention, and she depicted all the ancillary characters as pretty unpleasant stereotypes. The females were either fat, homely, and looking for a boyfriend, or skinny, pretty, nearly naked and dumb. (And there with a boyfriend). The male characters were, of course, socially inept, obsessive gamers, or socially inept, pimply programmers, or ...

You get the picture. I have friends who refused to read any of her books after that one came out.

That's one thing I liked about the Parrots book. While a lot about the con/fans was meant to be silly, I never got the feeling the author was being malicious. It had sort of an insider's edge to it instead of someone just looking to lampoon the whole thing.

LOL! Okay, now this has me curious, but I see this is one in a series. Is it the first one, or is there others before it?

Yes, I like to start from the beginning. ;)

I'm exactly the same way! I hate reading books out of order. :D

It's actually the 5th book in the series. I've been enjoying them so far, although I have to say I found Murder with Puffins (the 2nd book) a bit on the dull side.

Also you have to just roll with how Meg's family just happens to show up and be heavily involved in every book. There are many ORLY moments when it comes to setup. XD

Yeah, the characters and situations are all a bit over the top--intentionally so--but the author does seem to enjoy the little world she's created.

Totally agree with you about Murder with Puffins. (I haven't read the two most recent books yet.)

I love the world she's created too! Meg's ever-present wacky family is so much fun. :D

I loved this book. I think it was on my recommend list to you. I especially loved the badfic reading scene. :D This was my favorite of this series.

I now imagine all actors do this for laughs. XD
