This second part just kind of went all flat, didn't it? Since the angels didn't seem all that scary, a lot of this episode felt like padding. Insert chase scene here. Gunfire. Slow moving chase scene there. Yelling. I just didn't feel the tension it was going for.

Also, I was a bit irked that we saw the angels moving. The really clever thing about Blink was that the audience was a pair of eyes.

River's secrets? Honestly, I just don't care and so the teases are annoying instead of exciting. Side note: the constant innuendo gets pretty old. It's making me glad that Jack wasn't around longer than he was. Although I'm not sure which is more off-putting: Torchwood!emo!Jack or DW!innuendo!Jack. Hmm.

Anyway! Speaking of off-putting. That ending. Apologies to any Doctor/Amy shippers, but that was just plain cringe-worthy. Were they going for funny? Sexy? All I know is that both actors looked very very very uncomfortable. It veered off into caricature-land, and while I know this series is/was going for more of a fantasy/fairytale thing, just meh. How can I be expected to take the relationship dynamics and characters seriously if the show doesn't? (Which is a different thing from simply having a funny scene, if you catch the distinction.)

OMG THE AMY/DOCTOR THING AT THE END WAS SO HORRIFYING TO ME, MICHELLE, IDEK. I got such terrible second-hand embarrassment that I tried to hide behind the couch.

I sometimes think that I have held a grudge against Amy since then. So awkward. And I'm also not sure how much I approve of the whole "IT'S FUNNY BECAUSE AMY IS TRYING TO KISS A MAN AND HE IS REPEATEDLY SAYING 'NO' HOW UNEXPECTED" message.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-18 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I got sort of a "look at the ridiculous woman" vibe from it. I'm not particularly holding it against Amy, but I am eyeing the writing.

YES THIS. It's not because HOW VERY DARE she go after the Doctor; it's because I have a massive embarrassment squick. And that? Was horrifying to someone like me. Noooooooo.

[identity profile] goldy-dollar.livejournal.com 2011-01-18 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
YES. My embarrassment squick in that scene is so bad, I can't even.

I also find it really creepy in the context of... well, if you switched the genders around you would suddenly get not a funny scene at all and I am not sure if SHE IS KISSING A MAN OVER HIS PROTESTS LOL LOL LOL!!! is really such a great message. D:

[identity profile] katesutton.livejournal.com 2011-01-18 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
I already give Moffat the side-eye over his whole issue thing with men and women and how they relate to each other. THAT DID NOT HELP. It's like, isn't it HILARIOUS, because a woman could never assault a man, HA! Ew.

ME TOO!! I think I about burrowed into the cushions trying to hide from it. It was just so...so...hard to watch. *shudders* I like Amy (for the most part), but that scene really creeped me out, and made me very NOT HAPPY with her for a while.

YES!

Speaking of off-putting. That ending.

AND ALSO: WORD.

I very nearly gave up in disgust (I actually didn't watch again for two weeks and then took the next two eps together).

I liked the bit with Amy counting. That was creepy.

It's just...it's not even a matter of Amy wanted some sex now please, it's that it was so cartoony.

I liked the bit with Amy counting. That was creepy.

It was a nice touch.

This episode was hit or miss for me, but it has one of my all-time favorite moments in all of Doctor Who:

"Doctor? Excuse me. Hello, Doctor? Angel Bob here, sir."

"Ah. There you are, Angel Bob. How's life? Sorry, bad subject."

"The Angels are wondering what you hope to achieve."

"Achieve? We’re not achieving anything. We're just hanging. It's nice in here, consoles, comfy chairs, a forest. How's things with you?"

"The Angels are feasting, sir. Soon we will be able to absorb enough power to consume this vessel, this world, and all the stars and worlds beyond."

"Well, we've got comfy chairs, did I mention?"

"We have no need of comfy chairs."

"I made him say comfy chairs!"

And I don't really like the ending scene, but I can't get the image of the Sassy Gay Friend cheering Amy on, so right now I'm kind of giggling. Pretty soon I'll be going back to: DNW.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-18 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
The Doctor does love his comfy chairs. :D

And...I just don't get the ending. It seems so wrong-footed, and not just internally.

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2011-01-18 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
lol. I can also see Sassy Gay Friend saying "what, what, what are you doing? You're getting married tomorrow and you're trying to make out with a man who is 900 years older than you? Look at your life. Look at your choices."

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2011-01-18 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
Yeeeeah. This episode is kind of a hot mess. There are a couple of cool elements to it (like Amy counting backwards), but generally? It's a mess.

The ending is so DNW for me. And I am just really sick of River being all ~mysterious. It's just frustrating. It's not intriguing. It doesn't make me care about River more. Stop it, Moffat.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-18 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
I'm really disappointed. I really liked Blink and this just isn't a very good follow-up.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2011-01-18 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
As soon as it was announed the Angels were coming back I was pretty much like "....omfg what are you doing". Blink worked the way it did because it was a one-off story, and I doubted much about the Angels could be revisited without ruining them. AS USUAL I AM CORRECT, lol.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-18 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
Some things just don't hold up very well on repeat. Actually, quite a lot of things in DW just don't hold up.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2011-01-18 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I sort of liked the episode less and less as it went on -- didn't like the "walk like you can see" bit at all, did like Amy counting down, etc. The ending was... weird. I found it really funny at first but the more I thought about it the ickier it became.

On the bright side, now you get ROARY.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-18 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
There was a bit of dumbed-down logic going on, especially with the bit about the Angels not attacking if you looked like you could see them. Okay then. :D

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2011-01-18 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
I also disliked the shift to neck-snapping. It is so much less mysterious and interesting, there are a million villains in Doctor Who already that kill people outright, sending people back in the past is what made them unique.

ALSO did you catch the way they like, quietly retconned The Next Doctor? It cracked me up because lol, Next Doctor, but I also reject the reality of anything actually being retconned.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-18 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
HA! Poor The Next Doctor. It gets no love. XD

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2011-01-18 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
SOMEONE VOTED FOR IT AT DWREWATCH AS THE BEST SPECIAL

Side-eying them tbh

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-18 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
:D But the Doctor wasn't mauled by a bear in it! Not even a little bit!

I don't know. That's a bit debatable in my mind. :D

EVEN PLANET OF THE DEAD WAS BETTER THOUGH

Oooh not sure about that. At least TND had Rosita (lololol) and the whole "he never gets thanked so let's thank him" thing going on - which then you see the creepy dark side of in WOM when he asks to be thanked.

(Hope that's coherent lol. It's late).

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2011-01-18 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
IDK I found Christina annoying but POTD had more sort of whacky sci-fi humour about it, more of the "fun romp" RTD described it as, whereas TND... had the Cybermen (who are my least favourite of all villains) and Jackson Lake being kind of useless, and the "Is he the Doctor or isn't he???" intrigue lasted about five minutes. Also POTD had the Donna shout-out I was craving.

But TND is easily my least favourite Christmas special, well below even ACC, so I dunno what it is about that episode but I just can't, lol.

So you didn't like ACC? Did you post thoughts on it anywhere? Your stuff is always interesting to read and I don't think I saw it if you posted a review or anything =)

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2011-01-18 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Christina calls him "Spaceman" and he is all ":( I had a friend who used to call me Spaceman".

I'm pretty sure I did post about Christmas Carol somewhere! It is probably tagged under 'doctor who' and I probably posted it on the 25th.

OK, so get this. You know how we always used to complain about people who said the Doctor and Rose had a father/daughter relationship? Well, now I kind of feel that way about 11 and Amy, despite how young Matt Smith is. *facepalm* I literally cannot comprehend 11/Amy shippers. I've tried, but I just can't go there. I actually ended up really liking their relationship, but there is no romance there. *shudder*

[personal profile] skybound2 2011-01-18 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. I definitely see Eleven as being VERY PATERNAL, which yeah, odd given how young the actor is. Thee fatherly dynamic he has for both Amy and Rory is one of the things I like best about the new Series, and I don't want that being fuddled with.

River's secrets? Honestly, I just don't care and so the teases are annoying instead of exciting.

Yeah ... I prefer how they handled the mystery of Jack to be honest. It's like, a little bit about Jack creeps out now and again - enough to keep you involved with the character, not enough to make you feel like you're being baited. With River, it's going on 3 years and we still know nothing. Annoying most definitely.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-18 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, baited. That's it. I generally don't enjoy that.

Yeah, that ending scene was..... odd. I'm glad they ended up going the direction they did, with the Doctor going and getting Rory. That's what I call pro-active. We all know that Ten would have just pretended the whole thing never happened. lol.

Oh, Torchwood!emo!Jack. Don't remind me.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-18 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I could see Ten being all "AND LET US NEVER SPEAK OF THIS AGAIN." XD

[identity profile] katesutton.livejournal.com 2011-01-18 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
I kind of tried to pretend these episodes didn't happen. On the one hand when River is serious and getting stuff done, instead of being a Woman of Mystery, I like her. Which is a step forward. On the other hand, as you noted, the angel mythology took a distinct step downward here.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-18 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course, now the angels don't exist, right? Blink is gone. :D

[identity profile] chloris67.livejournal.com 2011-01-18 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
About the ending, have you seen the DVD extra that shows the bit in between Flesh and Stone and The Vampires of Venice? I wasn't sure what to think about Amy trying to jump the Doctor but I loved the extra scene!

If you haven't seen it: Extra scene. It does set up the first few minutes of Vampires of Venice but nothing beyond that.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-18 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm still getting residual embarrassment squick with that scene, but it's funny how Amy brought up the scores of questionably-clad women. Especially from DW's Lads and Dads days.
skybound2: (DW Donna TARDIS door)

[personal profile] skybound2 2011-01-18 03:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I was also bothered by how they treated the angels. they took something that built on the feeling of DREAD wonderfully, and just turned them into common place MOTW, which I didn't care for at all.

And I've just tried to block about the ending, as it makes me cringe just thinking about it. *cringes* See? There I go again!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-18 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, the way the episode wound up you could have pretty much inserted any baddie. The Doctor and Co ultimately didn't have to deal with the Angels, so it could have just as easily been Sponge Monsters.

And I think I've already blocked it. XD

[identity profile] shinyopals.livejournal.com 2011-01-18 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Eleven and Amy are SO INCREDIBLY DNW AND FILLED WITH HORROR AND SHAME AND BAD THINGS. I just can't not view them as father/daughter, so that last scene was EVERYTHING TERRIBLE.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-18 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Especially after this episode when the Amelia relationship was really strong.
