I'll admit I was snuffling through the last 5 minutes or so. They've done moments with historical figures before about how they'll be remembered in the future, but this was bumped up a few notches. I was surprised (in a good way) they actually took a famous person along in the TARDIS. And then there was snuffling.
I'm really glad that showing Vincent the future didn't change anything. Depression isn't something that goes away just by thinking good thoughts or anything. (So happy we live in the days of medication. Screw you, Tom Cruise.)
Eleven was surprisingly lovely about it all. This is by far the most sympathy, caring and kindness I've seen from him. And Amy and Vincent were cute together. Ultimate ginger! :D
The only thing that stuck out to me was when Amy went and hid when the monster was attacking. It seemed kind of odd. Pick up a stick and start swinging, girl! And it was closely followed up by the Doctor saying something about needing to keep Amy safe. Which...isn't unusual for him to want to keep his companions safe, but the way he said it struck me as a vibe of "Amy is 5 years old and must be kept safe." I guess it's the Amelia relationship coming out?

I think this is the most emotion we see from Amy, tbh, or at least the most emotion we see from Amy about things not directly related to her (ie Rory dying twiceover), so it was nice.

I don't remember this instance in particular, but I'd wager that it might also be because he'd just got a companion killed a couple weeks ago.

It was! A lot of her emotional stuff has revolved around Rory -- which isn't a bad thing -- but it's nice to get another angle.

That could be. The problem with knowing spoilers about Rory is I'm sort of forgetting about him as a motivation. :D

I think he's also in uber-protective mode right now.
I LOVE THIS EPISODE SO MUCH! I think it might be my Favourite Episode Involving an Historical Personage, but I'm not positive because I don't know how much Reinette counts. Mostly, I just thought it was very nearly perfect in terms of tone and storytelling (though I'll admit that the first time I saw it, two minutes after I watched Rory get sucked into the rift, I had a different reaction).
I mostly wondered about his ear. Isn't Van Gogh the one who lost an ear?
*stops talking so as to avoid spoilers*

Probably.

It is a bit jarring immediately after Rory, but on its own it really is a lovely little episode. :)

Oh right! Hmmm.

I think that's kind of the point, actually, now that I've seen it a few times. Because Amy's forgotten him, and so the writers chose to make US forget him too...except clearly we haven't, which just makes it all the more awkward. Because every time Vincent says something like "I love you!" or "Stay here and we'll have babies by the score!" you think "Awwww!" and then "NOOOO!" and then "I'M CONFUSED!" and it could have been a mess, but somehow it worked.
(Yes, I watched the episode twice the day before yesterday to prepare for your viewing of it...I was bored!)

And meanwhile Eleven was quietly (and subtly) angsting in the background.

And I think the doctor does still look on Amy as Amelia, the seven year old girl.

MY SENTIMENTS EXACTLY. Heh, and don't get me started on Tom Cruise.
I also love Eleven's pile of good things speech. LOVE IT.
Hmmm, maybe he is feeling extra-protective of Amy because of what just happened to Rory? Or yeah, he's just seeing her as bb!Amelia again. :)

As someone who's happily on medication, *gives the finger to Tom baby*

Yes! I thought it was the perfect thing to say there.

Probably. I probably only noticed it because I was already frowning at Amy hiding.

Agreed. :)

I've been giving a lot of thought as to why this episode worked so beautifully for me and I realized it's very simple. Steve Moffat is a brilliant technical writer. He can plot a story arc so tightly that he can play the wibbly-wobbly stuff. Great for a single episode or a comedy series (Coupling is superb in it's comic timing and who can forget Jane's sock puppet turning on her), but with something like this, I begin to feel it has no heart. The plots are story-driven, not character driven.
Richard Curtis (whose stuff I also love) is very much character-driven and it shows here. Amy does get to shine here, I think, with her sadness that she doesn't understand, amplified at the end by the realization that they couldn't save Vincent from himself. And, oh, the sunflowers. Just...I love it.

I did really like having both the Doctor and Amy's different viewpoints on Vincent - someone who understood and someone who didn't. It was well done.

The guy who played Vincent was awesome, I thought. Probably my favorite episode this series. I also quite like the last one, but quality-wise I think this one is the best.

A lot of things in this episode were nice touches.

Plot-wise I think I might like Amy's Choice better, but this one wins as far as emotional content.

Edit: I should say that I don't hate Van Gogh's art, just that I'm not into Impressionism. I can appreciate his talent, though.
