(no subject)

Haven't seen the 2nd part yet.

I have to give this episode props. I did not see the whole trap angle coming. In fact, up until that point I was grumbling about the show handwaving apparent plot holes like Rory coming back.

The fact that the Pandorica -- the thing that by legend holds the greatest weapon ever -- is meant to hold the Doctor was a very cool twist.

However, I still have a hard time believing that all the Doctor's enemies -- and only his enemies -- have banded together to save the universe from the Doctor. Hmmmm. XD Also, I'm a bit disappointed the Pandorica didn't have this in it:

Couple more points:
  • Fitting everyone in S5 into this ep was kinda neat.

  • So, the Cybermen. They don't actually fit into any known canon, do they? New or Classic Who. *goes back to grumbling*

  • Rory was such a cheat. How did they manage to get Rory's exact memories?

  • I've decided I definitely prefer River when she's not in Jack Harkness douchebag mode.

  • Eleven's Rory recognition was too much for me. It was supposed to be funny, but damn. How dumb is the Doctor? Ever heard of multi-tasking? Come to think of it, he really didn't do much of any deducing in this ep. He was handed everything, mostly by River.

My favourite thing about this episode is Eleven's dramatic speech ("let somebody else try first!") ...and then re-watching that speech with the knowledge that every villain in the audience is laughing their ass off at how successful their evil plan has been.

I was very pleased to have Rory back but am still not sure how he got there. I like the finale, and I would be a hypocrite if I criticized Moffat's finale for its holes, but it is definitely not any less hole-y than RTD's finales were.

BWAH!!

Something will sparkle, won't it?

I personally love the cheesy hero speeches (the "trap" speech in the Angel two-parter? yeah, I ate that up) but I know other people find it grating, so I really liked Moffat lampshading his own trope there.

You know, I legit can't remember if anyone sparkles or not. :O :O I know that several of the bingo cards [livejournal.com profile] papilio_luna made had winners, though.

I totally need to see that after I watch the last part. XD

It is DEFINITELY less holy than the Jesus!Doctor finale.

((SORRY SORRY COULDN'T RESIST!!!!!))

That is totally my favourite bit too. I don't mind the Doctor doing the occasional DRAMATIC SPEECH - it would annoy me if it was a Thing - but mocking it is THE BEST.

I thought the trap angle was cool, it's just annoying that -- again -- the audience figures it out before the Doctor does. I hate that Moffat does that so often in his scripts.

How dumb is the Doctor?

Heh, exactly.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-28 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't figure it out until the Doctor did, but then I'm just average-bear smart. :D

I didn't mean it like that, promise!! =X

I just mean the whole lead-in during the Stonehenge monologue like "all my enemies I have beaten have all come together because there is one person in the universe really dangerous who they hate and are scared of" - up until then, sure, there was no way to see where they were going with the Pandorica. But then he even says that (paraphrased) in the dialogue. As a fan, sure, whatever - but the Doctor should have figured it out by the point at which he is saying that.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-28 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
XD

Yeah, he really should have.

LOL, I didn't figure it out either. I am known to be a bit dense at times. :)

I thought it was going to be Amy in the Pandorica. Because of the cracks.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-28 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I was thinking that for a bit too. I also thought it might be the TARDIS at one point.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-28 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
And holy crap, you caught up fast! Or did you skip a few?

I still have no idea what anything in either of these episodes actually meant or if it makes sense. I liked them, but it was just on a level of: "Here's some stuff! Pretty stuff! Exciting stuff! Rory stuff! River stuff! More stuff! It's all happening! Lots of stuff!"

And then when it was all over, really all I managed to piece together was, "Some stuff happened."

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-28 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
BWAH! Yeah, pretty much. "LOOK AT THE SHINY! OOOOOOH!"

[identity profile] beck-liz.livejournal.com 2011-01-28 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and see, I love these episodes, but that's because I turn my brain off and go, "Oooooh, pretty!!!!!" Plus I love the end of the next episode, so. *shrug*

[identity profile] intrikate88.livejournal.com 2011-01-28 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
I kind of feel that way about a lot of what Moffat does-- I mean, you can see his shiny spark of an idea and it is pretty! But I also sense some insecurity or something in his writing, because the same ideas get all crammed in at once, again and again, like he's expecting to only be working on oneshots instead of entire season arcs. I'm looking forward to the next series (and the second one of Sherlock too) because I'm hoping to see a bit more maturity and security in the plotting and writing style.

[identity profile] chloris67.livejournal.com 2011-01-28 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
At this point it's been long enough since I saw the episodes that I'm fuzzy on the plot details but I don't really care so long as Rory is back! *hugs Rory* He is quite definitely my favorite character in s5.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-28 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
*pats Rory* I bet people were freaking out when it aired!

[identity profile] beck-liz.livejournal.com 2011-01-28 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, I think I may have accidentally used a spoiler-y icon for the final episode in a recent post of yours. I've lost track. If you haven't seen it, don't worry about it. :-)

Anyway, by these episodes I've pretty much done a 180 and am all "YAY, RIVER!!!" I even have two River icons now, but I think they're both spoilery for the last episode so I won't use them here. :-D

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2011-01-28 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
LOL I remember watching the promos for Pandorica Opens and being like "yay River!... wait what?"

[identity profile] beck-liz.livejournal.com 2011-01-28 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
I know, right? I was all, wait, do I have a fever? What happened!?

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-28 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
I don't remember it, so no worries. :D

And maybe I'll get there yet with River. If only there was less of the "sweetie darling" shtick.

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2011-01-28 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
If only there was less of the "sweetie darling" shtick.

This is how I feel. I like River a LOT more than I used to, but something about her attitude still really grates with me.

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2011-01-28 07:57 am (UTC)(link)
RORY! In a Roman centurion's outfit! <3 <3 <3

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-28 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
XD Even though it was fake Rory!

[identity profile] shinyopals.livejournal.com 2011-01-28 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL THESE EPISODES. Man, I have a feeling when I get around to rewatching them, I am gonna be totally nitpicky and annoyed because wtf is the plot, but I recall them being pretty hilarious and I do love River.

Honestly, this is the lease sense-making Doctor Who has ever been, though. AND I INCLUDE ROSE'S DIMENSION CANON SHENANIGANS IN THAT.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-01-28 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
The more I think about it, the more holes I find. XD
